Questionunable to RE-install Exchange Client Access Role - error while creating the virtual directory OWA

    Hi,

    1. Installed "by accident" a sharepoint 3 site within the 'default web site'
    - This crashed the OWA

    2. To fix it up I'm following: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320202 "How to remove and reinstall IIS on a computer that is running Exchange 2007"
    - I'm going for scenario 3 "exchange 2007"
    - I reinstalled IIS7, and manually wiped the config files and history. It "looks" like a fresh install.
    - I installed all options on IIS7 just in case I missed one...
    - I remove the "Client Access Role" succesfully
    - next step is to reinstall the "Client Access Role: again by running : exsetup.exe /mode:install /roles:ca
    PROBLEM/ERROR:
Client Access server role        ......................... FAILED
An error occurred while creating the IIS virtual directory 'IIS://SERVER01.be.local/W3SVC/1/ROOT/owa' on 'SERVER01'.

    More info:
    - Running 2008 STD x64, I did set the 64bit flag for IIS7 and restarted. How can I check?
    - There are no exchange application pools left. (fresh install)
    - I tried to manually create the virtual directory. (same error as above)

    All help welcome.
    D

    tried several times....
Also, I don't think a bad II7 config should result in a complete reinstall of Exchange 7?

    Hi James,

I did do that. It should be running in 64b. Not sure how you can actually check this out.

More info from the event log:
Exchange Server component Client Access Role failed.
    Error: Error:
An error occurred while creating the IIS virtual directory 'IIS://SERVER01.be.local/W3SVC/1/ROOT/owa' on 'SERVER01'.

ISAPI extension owaauth.dll in group MSExchangeClientAccess was not found, and its status cannot be changed. Make sure that IIS Web Service Extension is still listed in Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.  If not, it may need to be added again.

Someone told me they forgot to mention in the KB post you need to reinstall ASP.net 2 and 3 AFTER you reinstalled II7.
    This sounds a bit strange.
Is this possible to do this on server 2008? When i try to do this the setup informs me it is already part of OS.

    Regards,
    D

    I noticed something strange.

I passed all the prerequisite checks without any Roles in my IIS7!
I have IIS7 basic running (Common + mgnt console)

The error would be caused by .net framework, please try to uninstall .Net, reinstall .Net Framework 2.0, and then install hotfix for .Net Framework 2.0 (KB 926776), finally .Net Framework 2.0 SP1

    Hi James,

    No luck,
The Exchange 2007 setup is really buggy.

    1. I removed IIS7, renamed the folders, removed the history folders,...
    2. The server does not have an IIS installed.
    3. When I launch exsetup.exe /mode:install /roles:ca
The following error in the logs shows:
Exchange Server component Client Access Role failed.
    Error: Error:
Web object 'IIS://SERVER01.be.local/W3SVC/1/ROOT' cannot be found.
    Unknown error (0x80005000)

How is it possible that I passed the prerequisite check?
How is it possible that it even tries to install without IIS7?

How on earth can I get the CA role back without having to follow first level advice like 'reinstall your server!'
    This is not an option.

Already many thanks for helping out.

PS: can you advice on how to completly remove .net 2.0 from a server 2008?

    Thanks,

Please see the “Repairing .NET Framework 2.0/3.0 files on Windows Vista” section in this article, it’s for windows server 2008 as well

After you removed IIS and reboot the server, have you verified if “ApplicationHost.config” file has gone in %windir%\system32\inetsrv\config folder? Please ensure it does before reinstalling IIS and CAS server role

Have you installed “IIS 6 Management Compatibility”? Please install it if not yet

    Hi James,
    Sorry I was overseas.

No luck, I wiped everything, no integrity errors. You can probably simulate test it if you want:
    1. Server 2008 STD 64b
    2. + Exchange 2007 with CAS role
    3. + sharepoint 3, create site under default website --> this will break your OWA
    4. tried to restore from IIS history --> no luck
    5. tried to wipe and create the Vir Dirs & pools --> no luck
    6. wiped IIS7, removed CAS, installed IIS7, changed 64b flag... and tried to install CAS --> no luck

It seems that creating a sharepoint site inside your default website isn't a good idea :s
I hate to give up on this. I have some incident tickets available. Do you think there is a solution for this and if so will they tell me how they fixed it?

The server is for testing but still, I am depending on it and hate to see another day lost rebuilding it.

Thanks for your help so far.

Does the SharePoint still on the server? If yes, per my knowledge, it will keep disable default web site and keep taking port 80, even reinstalld the IIS

    Hi James,
    I removed the sharepoint already.
    Today I started again.
Wiped, installed, wiped, installed,... I tried a few more things.

Still on console: An error occurred while creating the IIS virtual directory 'IIS://SERVER01.be.local/W3SVC/1/ROOT/owa' on 'SERVER01'.
in event log: ISAPI extension owaauth.dll in group MSExchangeClientAccess was not found, and its status cannot be changed. Make sure that IIS Web Service Extension is still listed in Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.  If not, it may need to be added again.

Because it is a clean install of IIS7 I added the "Exchange OWA Cookie Authentication ISAPI Filter" and the ActiveSync filters to the ApplicationHost.config file --> IISRESET --> no luck

If I use the Exchange console and do: new-owavirtualdirectory -OWAVersion "Exchange2007" -Name "owa (Default Web Site)"
I get almost the same result except for a WARNING first:
WARNING: The ISAPI filter was not enabled
An error occurred while creating the IIS virtual directory 'IIS://SERVER01.be.local/W3SVC/1/ROOT/owa' on 'SERVER01'.

How can we debug this further?

    Cheers,
    D

Per my research, the possible cause is the .Net framework. Yet, it’s built in the windows server 2008, which we can’t clean reinstall. So, I think the only option left is to reinstall the OS
