domain rename (NetBIOS only) with Exchange
domain rename (NetBIOS only) with Exchange
- I know there are *lots* of posts about how a domain rename is not supported with any version of Exchange except 2003 SP1 (as far as I remember).
I just want to clarify something - if the rename procedure is only renaming the NetBIOS name (i.e. DNS naming structure stays the same), can this be a supported scenario with other versions of Exchange installed? (In this case, Win 2008 RTM domain and Exchange 2007 SP2).
Reading between the lines, it sounds like the rename problem is to do with hard-wired FQDNs in Exchange, so it sounds like there's a vague possibility that the NetBIOS rename might be ok.
I know the domain rename in itself is a scary procedure - I've done it once before in a relatively simple domain with Exchange 2003.
A client has (predictably) replied with a bunch of expletives to my proposal for a full inter-forest migration. :-(
Thanks in advance,
John

- Hi,
That's not supported in Exchange 2007 since NetBIOS rename is part of the domain name. Until now, there is still no rename tool for Exchange 2007.
Thanks for your understanding.

I am sure it is not supported as this is still considered as domain name change. http://forums.msexchange.org/m_1800502481/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#1800502481
Raj- Thanks. I suspect that MS may not support it (either for a good technical reason or because they don't see the need to test and support one type of domain rename as opposed to another). I'd still like confirmation if possible, ideally from someone in MS.
The link you added actually ends with the guy saying he tested it in a lab and it all worked fine! Encouraging, but I still wouldn't go ahead until MS clarify whether or not it's supported.
John Sure, lets wait to hear some thing from MS.

One of the problems is that the distinguished names of the objects in
the AD must be changed, and with them all the links that refer to
those names.

It's probably not somethng PSS is preparted to support under any
circumstances. But a call to MS would get you an official answer. I'm
not employed by MS so I can't answer the querstion in a definitive
way.

I've emailed our TAS and I'll post the response here.
