Exchange 2007 Service Pack 2 Failed - Error1603
- I am running Exchange 2007 SP1 in SBS2008 x64. I tried installing Exchange SP2 and it failed fatally and let Excahge unable to work. This what happened:
Step 1 - Stooping Services - OK (took 58 Seconds)
Step 2 - Remove Exchange Files - OK too (22 Minutes 16 Seconds)
Step 3 - Preparing Files - OK (took 1 second)
Step 4 - Copy Exchange Files - FAILED after about 4 minutes (looked around 80% complete). Error installing exchangeserver.msi, Error code: 1603.
I was unable to find anything useful on the Internet (other than other people had also experienced this issue) or in Microsoft's support pages. I tried running "lodctr /r" in case there were any performance counters causing a problem (only thing I could find on the internet).
I tried running Setup.Exe (in SP2 download) again but it only asked which additional services I wanted to add (which of course were none) but could not find a way of repeating the SP2 implementation from scratch.
I tried starting the services manually but the Exchange Transport Service kept stopping - all other services started.
I could not send ot receive emails.
I tried rebooting the server into Directort Services Restore Mode to install a backup but it would not log on (said there were no logon Server available - not SBS2008 implementations only have 1 logon server - so the logon seemed a useless option)
Eventually I booted from SBS 2008 DVD and went into Repair and restored the Server from the last Backup (Except data and emails).
This worked but the Exchange Database could not be mounted (even manually) so I eventually had to replace the database from the last backup too and manually mount. This worked but the network lost the last day's emails.
After a stressful day everything seems to be working but without Exchange SP2.
Anyone got any ideas what is causing this? I am loathed to try again but I guess at some point I will need to install the Service Pack. There do not seem to be much in the way of notes on what to do if it fails in this way.
I cannot provide additional logs since the Server has been restored from backup - any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ian

The general consensus in the SBS community appears to the that it is not advised attempting to install Exchange SP2 on SBS 2008. All the updates, however, to RU9 work.
For users who want to deploy Exchange 2007 SP2 on their Windows SBS machines urgently, manual steps are provided in KB 973862. However, we strongly recommend users to leverage our upcoming installation tool for a successful SP2 installation. We will inform you via this blog when this tool is available

Remember for SBS 2008, there will be a SBS specific installer for Exchange 2007 SP2.

- Might sound funny, but i also faced the same error on my lab machines and got it resolved by copying the executable to my hard drive, started the installation from there and got it working.
Raj - Hi Rajinish,
Unfortunately, this was a production server (since we only have 1 SBS2008 machine) and I was already running it from a hard drive on the machine. I have seen in a posting that this could be an issue associated with Exchange 2007 SP1 Rollup 4 being installed but until I understand what is causing this and what to do, I am reluctant to try it again.

- Thanks for the responses, I am happy to wait until an installation tool comes out...the SP2 update did however specify that Exchange 2007 SP2 was applicable to SBS2008 (and provided specific instructions to change a Registery Key) so I guess there is some conflicting information in Microsoft's support documentation. Everything (except sharepoint) is back to normal (I will try to sort out the sharepoint error this weekend).
I will read all the useful links posted over the next couple of days when I get a little more time.
Thank you for your support
Kind regards
Ian
