AnswerOutlook 2002 - cannot resolve username for setting up new exchange account

I am desperate for help on this matter:

I recently had to use the windows 2000 repair installation procedure on a Windows 2000 PC to solve an unrelated problem with the hardware drivers. This PC used to part of a domain, on which it's users roaming profile had already been cached, and he had his outlook 2002 SP3 setup to connect to his exchange 2002 account - it worked fine before.

After the repair install, the PC was still part of the domain (the computer account still present in active directory) and the PC itself joined to the domain - so both myself (admin) and the user can log in to the domain.

Problem is, the user's email no longer works, when he opens outlook 2002, he simply sees "unable to open default email folders". When I check his outlook profile settings (view/change existing accounts), I notice that the "exchange server" field is greyed out but prefilled with the exchange server on which his account is stored.

So I took the next step of creating a new profile for him - but after entering the exchange server, and trying to resolve his username, I get this: "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action"

I then pinged the exchange server by hostname - it responded and got it's IP address.
I can even browse the exchange server through explorer.

When I logged on with my own account, I had exactly the same problem.
When we both tried a different Windows 2000 PC, there was no problem.
Trying to reinstall windows from scratch/rebuild is out of the question since there are some very specialist software on that PC that cannot be recovered.

I have tried repairing/reinstalling/uninstall then installing outlook 2002 but no difference.
Please advise if there is anything else I can try?
    Thanks.

    The resolution was this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/325930

    this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientProtocols

was non existant on the PC, I created it and inserted the four registry entries:

    Name Type Data
    ncacn_http REG_SZ rpcrt4.dll
    ncacn_ip_tcp REG_SZ rpcrt4.dll
    ncacn_np REG_SZ rpcrt4.dll
    ncadg_ip_udp REG_SZ rpcrt4.dll

    problem solved after that.

Try configuring the OL profilw with the IP address of the Exchange server, then try with the GC server name and IP address of the GC.

Also make sure that  When configuring the mail profile Verify that File-> Work Offline is not selected. Also try disabling the FW or network protection software that comes with AV.

    Hi,

From the symptom, it seems that the client could not get the GC to resolve the name. Please try to configure the profile based on the Rajnish's suggestion.

    Then post the result.

    Thanks
