Mailbox store disappeared when adding new users in AD users and computers
-
Monday, April 16, 2012 8:37 PMI have a Windows 2003 domain with an Exchange 2010 Standard Server. I went to go add a user today to implement group policies and when i get to the part to create an exchange mailbox the mailbox store drop down box is blank. I did create a new OU and added 2 users to it, but i'm not sure if this issue was before or after. We did lose power over the weekend and the Exchange server was powered down when i came in. Any ideas?

Are you creating the user through ADUC or in Exchange?
If you are creating in ADUC then you shouldn't be seeing anything Exchange related. If you do then it sounds like you might have the Exchange 2003 management tools installed.
If you are using Exchange 2010 EMC, then can you see any mailbox database?

I was using ADUC. I tried to use the exchange managment console after i posted this and I got an ldap error. from what i remember when i did my 2003 to 2010 migration i thought i removed everything involved with the old 2003 server. Would the Exchange 2003 management tools be in add/remove programs?

Hi Fernando,
Please ensure that you have below permission settings:
1 computer account is in Exchange trusted subsystem group
2 check allow inheritance for administrator account
3 add administrator account in Exchange trusted subsystem group
4 reboot the domain controller and Exchange server
Try again.
If still not work please run preparead and preadomain.
Thanks.

If you are getting prompts about mailbox creation in ADUC then the Exchange management tools or the DLLs for it are still there somewhere. Are you using ADUC on the Exchange server itself, or on another server?
AD errors in Exchange 2010 are often resolved by restarting the AD Topology and system attendant service.

Yes, I get errors on both 2003 ADUC from the 2003 domain controller and when i try to create the mailbox from the Exchange management tools. If i use ADUC from the Exchange 2010 server i don't get an option to create a mailbox. Where do I remove the Exchange 2003 management tools? I don't see them on the Exchange 2010 server.
I think I'll try Sembee's method first.

You cannot use ADUC to create mailboxes.
You cannot use Exchange 2003 management tools to create mailboxes on Exchange 2003.
You have two options.
1. Create the mailbox and account through Exchange Management Console.
2. Create the accoun in ADUC and then mailbox enable it in Exchange Management Console.
Plus EMS can be used.
You will not have Exchange 2003 management tools on the Exchange 2010 server because Exchange 2003 is 32 bit, Exchange 2010 is 64 bit. If you see the mailbox options in ADUC on the domain controller then you need to check that server for the tools and remove them.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012 9:17 PMOk, i had installed the Exchange 2003 management tools on the domain controller. I'll remove them tomorrow since i'm not onsite and was working remotely and need to put the Exchange DVD in the server. I'll remove the tools should i restart the AD Topology and system attendant service?
