I understand for email between the two, it's possible to have mail either travelling via the public internet (i.e. using MX records) or to use a Smart Host and use the VPN.

Would I be correct in thinking that for the latter, we would set up a Smart Host on a Hub Transport server for domain2.com and point it to the Hub Transport at domain2.com (they use Exchange 2007 too).

Couple of questions:

i) What would be the advantage of using a Smart Host as opposed to public DNS

ii) On which Hub Transport would I actually set the Smart Host (we have multiple AD sites). Would it be all the Hub Transports, or the HT's that have an SMTP Connector to our 3rd party SMTP gateways? We have a proprietary email client that does regular checks for new messages. Some users also have blackberrys and other devices that they use to check their email (using BIS). I find that there are some actions (which I can't define 100% but appear to be related to replying/forwarding or messages) that cause the email to have it's UID changed to the next available UID. This causes a problem when our POP client does a UIDL request to the Exchange Server and the server gives the same message back as "new" and it makes it into the inbox despite already being in the inbox. I have thoroughly researched this problem and I have yet to be given a solution except "don't leave mail on the server" which is NOT a solution. Please let me know why the UIDs are changing and what Microsoft intends to do about it.Mon, 05 Oct 2009 19:57:52 Z2009-11-30T22:21:22Zhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/696d28bc-c269-4931-a7b2-f2d06e34f878http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/696d28bc-c269-4931-a7b2-f2d06e34f878Brantley Allenhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Brantley%20AllenI need a definitive answer about Exchange 2003 SP2 and Windows 2008 Domain Controllers
I am planning to upgrade my Windows Server 2000 domain controllers to Windows Server 2008, taking my domain to the Windows 2008 forest/domain function level.

My Exchange 2003 SP2 server is running on Windows Server 2003 SP2. I do not want this system to change.

Will Exchange Server 2003 SP2 running on Windows Server 2003 function properly in a Windows 2008 forest/domain function level environment?

I've looked at this: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/09/09/452361.aspx
And this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee338574.aspx

These seem to disagree with each other.

The supportability matrix doesn't show Exchange 2003 SP2 being supported in a 2008 domain functional level environment.

So, what's the answer? Can I upgrade my domain controllers to 2008 function level and continue using my Exchange 2003 SP2 server?

Brantley Allen
System Administrator
Fri, 27 Nov 2009 18:49:36 Z2009-11-30T21:24:54Zhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/034921c7-7f38-4b99-bf6f-e78b07c81a4fhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/034921c7-7f38-4b99-bf6f-e78b07c81a4fMarkGordonhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=MarkGordonAdding a Windows Server 2008 w/Exchange 2007 SP1 to a Windows Server 2003 domainMy company will likely be upgrading our exchange server next year to Exchange 2007 running on Server 2008. This will be our first Server 2008 installation. Since this server will be running Exchange, it will obviously need to have Active Directory installed. I have been unable to find any information that describes what the minimum level is for my Server 2003 Domain Controllers in this type of environment. I am hoping that we will not have to upgrade the domain controllers too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Fri, 07 Aug 2009 22:19:00 Z2009-11-30T21:12:52Zhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/97c3fcce-be4a-4019-bff5-4ac5cca00b6ahttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/97c3fcce-be4a-4019-bff5-4ac5cca00b6axroadtripxhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=xroadtripxEmail stuck in mail queue - only certain messagesWe have a user who sends a email a couple times a week. When he sends the email, since most of the information is the same , he sends it to a group of people and includes himself. The next time he sends it he just takes the email he previously sent out, replies all, changes some of the text and sends it out. The email gets stuck in the mail queue under the domains he is attempting to send it to. He has been doing this since last year and the problem has just started occurring. It doesn't happen every time he does it just once in a while. When testing the email I have tried forwarding it to my hotmail and yahoo accounts and it gets stuck, if I send it internally it works. I have tried changing the subject, the text, even forwarding it blank and it still gets stuck. The only thing that seems to work is if I copy and paste the information into a new email. Since he has sent it out so many times we have tested some of the other emails and some work and some don't. I can send it via telnet but I am copying and pasting the data so it is not a true test. I have also tried it in OWA, on computers not in the domain,. computers with no virus software yet I still have the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also is there a way to test an email to see if it is corrupted?Fri, 27 Nov 2009 19:12:00 Z2009-11-30T16:02:33Zhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/cc6c1ddb-4ff4-4d82-a805-94c424517f9ahttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/cc6c1ddb-4ff4-4d82-a805-94c424517f9aDivyakumarhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=DivyakumarBACKUP Status VBS
Hi ,
Does ?Anyone have any script for Checking the Exchange 2007 Incremetal backup?
Regards,

Divyakumar
Thu, 26 Nov 2009 18:38:40 Z2009-12-01T08:29:59Zhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/af8a10f2-1734-42b6-b929-805b94a83dc7http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/af8a10f2-1734-42b6-b929-805b94a83dc7tylerchanhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=tylerchanEmail stuck in the Outbox folder of Outlook 2007As title, when user tried to send a mail to another user within the same organization, the mail stuck in his Outbox and could not be delivered.
