    Hi,

We have a working Ex2003SP2 organization and are migrating over to Ex2007SP1.
I have successfully installed a CAS\HUB win2008Ent Server into the existing Ex2003 organization and I am now in the process of installing a new Win2008Ent server with the Mailbox role.
However the install fails with the following error:

Service 'MSExchangeTransportLogSearch' failed to reach status 'Running* on this server.
Cannot start service MSExchangeTransportLogSearch on computer '.'.
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

In addition I get the following in the log:
    [14.07.2009 13:04:11] [2] [ERROR] Unexpected Error
[14.07.2009 13:04:11] [2] [ERROR] There are multiple primary SMTP addresses. Please ensure there is only one primary address for each address type.

Did you verify the proxyaddress attribute of IT Admin, Morten Langvik and System Attendant of mailbox server role. Make sure that those don't have more than one value starting with capital latter SMTP...

Please see my post in this thread, try to remove all trace of exchange after one failed installation

Please check “Microsoft Exchange Transport Log Search” service, see if we can start it manually

    1.      Launch services.msc

    2.      Check the current status of “Microsoft Exchange Transport Log Search” service

    3.      Double-click the service

    4.      On the “Log On” tab, confirm it’s “Local System account” under “Log on as”

    5.      Please also confirm “Allow service to interact with desktop” is unchecked

Please follow Dvaid’s post in this thread to increase the Service Control Manager Timeout value to 180000, and see if the installation can be completed

I had this issue in our lab (the 'failed to reach status' but not anything about proxy addresses in my case) and fixed it at first by adding the server object to the Exchange Domain Servers group.  Yes, this is an Exchange 2003 group (creating way back during 2003's AD preparation steps.)  Saw some other posts where people added the server objects into the Domain Admins group but this doesn't sound like a good idea.
Looking deeper, dsaccess was having trouble when identifying DCs.  SACL right was showing 0.  You can see the events in the application log.
It seemed like our domain security policies had been modified and were removing the Manage Security Audit log right on DCs from the Exchange 2007 groups (which is set up during one of the Exchange 2007 prep steps) - but the old Exchange 2003 groups were still in our custom policy to give that access back.  Still haven't totally ironed it out because I'm at the phase where we're testing other stuff.

Another thing I've heard this could be related to is disabling IPv6  the "wrong way" on Server 2008.  See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952842 for the "right way" (or leave it enabled if you have no particular reason)

    UPDATE:

I went through proxyAddresses using ADSIEdit.msc (configuration - services - exchange - administrative groups - server - etc.). I don't know why, but the new Exchange 2007 Mailbox server System Attendant was listed with two SMTP addresses:

    NOTES:Microsoft System Attendant1/NORWAY/ORGANIZATION@Exchange
    SMTP:NOVMMBX03-SA@domain.com
    SMTP:NOVMMBX03-SA2@domain.com
    X400:c=NO;a= ;p=ORGANIZATION;o=NORWAY;s=NOVMMBX03-SA;

So I just deleted the second one.

In addition I increased the Service Control Manager Timeout to 180000 like James-Luo suggested.

I ran the exchange setup again and now got the following error:
    Mailbox Role Failed
    Error:
Active Directory operation failed on dc01.domain.com. The object 'CN=Mailbox Database,CN=First Storage Group,CN=InformationStore,CN=NOVMMBX03,CN=Servers,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=ORGANIZATION,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com' already exists.
    The object exists.

I deleted the watermark and action registry keys and ran setup again with the exact same error.

    Any suggestions??

I appreciate all the feedback so far :)

Not sure if I should delete the Mailbox Database from Active directory using Adsiedit.msc and run setup again?

That would be good idea since setup stuck with object exists error.

But did you run ExBPA to see the health of Exchange server? You may get interesting result to find the cause.

After I remove and reinstall everything it stills fails with the error: There are multiple primary SMTP addresses. Please ensure there is only one primary address for each address type.

The System Attendant created during install always gets 2 SMTP adresses.

    NOTES:Microsoft System Attendant1/NORWAY/ORGANIZATION@Exchange
    SMTP:NOVMMBX03-SA@domain.com
    SMTP:NOVMMBX03-SA2@domain.com
    X400:c=NO;a= ;p=ORGANIZATION;o=NORWAY;s=NOVMMBX03-SA;

Is there another way to make sure that the proxyAddresses attribute in the configuration partition doesn't give the System Attendant account 2 primary SMTP addresses?

So far all I've been able to do is delete one of the SMTP addresses once the System Attendant is created and the install fails, but by then it is too late.

    Regards,
    Morten

Please check the recipient policy with the “Highest” priority, and also other recipient policies in there

    a.      Launch ESM

    b.      Recipients->Recipient Policy->Right-click the recipient policy with the “Highest” priority, click “Properties”

    c.       In the “General” tab, post the “Filter rules”

Notes: If legacyExchangeDN is in the filter, which can cause a problem parsing the LDAP filter, and also the symptom in this thread

Problematic recipient policy can cause similar symptom, please try to use the KB below to recreate your recipient policy that is set to highest priority

How to use recipient policies to control e-mail addresses in Exchange 2003 and in Exchange 2000

Somehow the install worked this time. Not sure why!!!

I removed all components and started the install over again. After the install there is still 2 primary SMTP addresses for the System Attendant, but for some reason the install completed fine and the Exchange Best Practice Analyzer started ignoring the error?

Here is how to remove 2 primary SMTP from System Attendant, thanks to Amit tank:

    Hi,

I deplying Exchange 2007 SP2 Mailbox role (CAS/HUB installed on separate machine) on SCR target machine (I have CCR on source setup). It fails with the following error -

Service 'MSExchangeTransportLogSearch' failed to reach status 'Running* on this server.
Cannot start service MSExchangeTransportLogSearch on computer '.'.
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

I checked value for proxyaddress attribute and there is only one value.

Any possible solution on this will really helpful.
