QuestionOutlook problems during Exchange 2003 transition to Exchange 2007

We are in the process of moving to EX2007. All MB's and PF's have been moved. Exchange 2003 has been shutdown but not yet removed from the site. In an effort to "workaround" an issue where one last application sends email, I changed the old Exchange 2003 server's host record in AD DNS to point to the new Exchange 2007 IP (I know this is not what I should do however I had no choice but try to make it work). I didn't think that this would cause any issues for our Outlook clients (a mixture of 2003 and 2007) but shortly after the DNS change users started complaining that their Outlook went offline and they started getting popups requesting authentication against the old servers name. No matter what credientials were put in, it continually asked and never went back online. Once DNS was corrected the Outlook problems went away. It also seems that taking Outlook out of Cached Exchange Mode will stop the auth popups. My question really is why is this happening? and will it be a problem AFTER I remove my old server from the Exchange site? Thanks!

I have seen a similar issue with a migration from 5.5 to 2003.  We worked with MS for a while on the issue, what we found was that the Outlook profile still had pointers to the old Exchange server. The best way we found to fix the issue was to create ne Outlook profile for the affected users.

    Thanks

Ouch! That's not an easy fix for larger organizations. I'm still below 60 users so not so bad.

is not a good practice to shutdown a server since it still coexist with another server...you should remove the exchange 2003 completily to avoid dependencies...if you look at the remove exchange 2003 form an exchange 2007 enviroment you can know how much exchange 2003 integrates with 2007... so i recommend to remove the exchange 2003 completely.

    Hi,

    1. You should not configure the Exchange 2003 host record to point to Exchange 2007 IP address

    2. After moving mailbox to Exchange 2007 from Exchange 2003, you should keep the Exchange 2003 online a period of time. When Outlook 2003 client launches, it will firstly connect Exchange 2003 server according to the profile setting. The Exchange 2003 is able to query AD to check which Exchange server host the user’s mailbox and redirect the Outlook client to connect to new Exchange server 2007. The Outlook will update profile setting to use the new Exchange server 2007.

The mailboxes were moved to the 07 server 7 weeks ago. The 03 server ws only powered down last week to make sure any dependancy issues were resolved before removing it from the site. The 03 server will be powered back up and removed from the site shortly.

    Hi,

If you create a new Outlook profile for Exchange 2007 users, whether does the issue persist after changing DNS record?
If the issue persists, please let me know whether the users are still able to send/receive email when Outlook works offline?
If the user is still able to send and receive email, please refer to following article to disable the Outlook download OAB files automatically to check whether the issue still persists:

    Thanks,
