I am running Win XP SP2 and when I opened MS Outlook Office 2007 to retrieve emails we received the following error.

“The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart outlook”

This error is not received when I start Outlook 2007. It pops open when I attempt to Send/Receive or create NEW email.

I have tried to repair with the utility in Win 2007 Office via Control Page, add/remove programs,Win Office 2007, Change, repair.

I am not using Exchange server.

    Thanks

it seems that your mailbox .PST file is too big.

try to reduce or export unused mail into several smaller PST file.

    hope that helps.

Thats rather ridiculous - a PST file that is too big?  I renamed mine and it has NO effect.  Indeed, if you search the web on this error there are TONS of listings all suggesting different approaches to fixing this pain in backside error.  NONE OF THEM WORK.  INCLUDING THE HOTFIX which Microsoft suggests is for Office 2007, but in fact, when you run it it tells you that you dont have the applicable product installed.

Do you think it would be too much to ask Microsoft to actually provide a solution to this pain in backside problem - you know, a definitive solution?  Not a bunch of guess work and do-nothing ideas.

Are you sure that your mailbox is below limit? also try by configuring new OL profile.

and if yu have set the delivery to PST then change it back to Mailbox and see

This is the most bizarre thing...  All day yesterday I struggled with this problem.  There are about 20 different solutions out on the web, some which claimed to be "the" solution, but all failed me.

I checked and my mailbox is way below limit, and I did try configuring a new OL profile - did nothing.

One web "solution" suggested deleting the entire \Documents and Settings\[User Name] folders...  naturally that seems like blowing up your own car because the windshield is dirty.

But here is the really bizarre part...

This morning I came to the office fully ready to remove Office 2003, Office 2007 and maybe even just reload Windows altogether - but I thought just once I would load Outlook and see what happens.  What happens?

The message box, AND problem are gone!!!  Everything is working correctly and so far, perfectly.

I dont know how, I dont know why.  But I will take it.

I receive the same message when I try to open, reply, forward or delete any emails in my outlook 2007. none of the methods described in severalsites work and the hotfix for outlook 2007 doesnt work as it says the expected version of the application is not found.

I am still waiting for a miracle as experienced by Beebo, no luck yet :(

    This is ridiculous.

Ah the frustration... and so, Beebo, what's your answer...

I am having much the same probs as you and sutjahjo. I have MSO 2007 sp2 on XP Home sp3.

I get this message when I try to save a new Journal Entry (JE). The older ones are fine and can be modified and saved but no new ones.

My PST file is approx 250mb. I've run scanpst.exe. Run the (so called) hotfix. Looked at the Journal subfile size - 2mb.

Incidentally, the very same issue presented while still running MSO 2003 on the same machine and same everything else, So what the problem???

    :)
