ActiveSync works but no GAL using Windows Mobile 6 and Exchange 2007
My firm has 30 mobile devices which are successfully using activesync for email. calendar, tasks. The issue is it appears that the GAL is not being used for the contacts but rather the contact list that was in the device prior to using active sync.
How do you make the GAL the default address list using active sync and windows mobile 6.0?
Thank you

Have a look at this excellent article showing you how to access the GAL:

Hi,
You can install Microsoft Global Contact Access, then you can use Pocket Outlook on your Windows Mobile powered Smartphone to look up contacts in the Global Address List (GAL) on your corporate Exchange server.
Thanks,
Elvis

This link no longer works. Anyone know what a solution might be?Hi,
The link that Elvis provided works perfectly fine. Please try again.
- Hi,
I have read this posting and have found this link to no longer work as described in the message before. Does anyone know where this can still be downloaded?
Thanks All - There are two different options:
1) Global Contact Access - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/global/default.mspx - this application is designed for Smartphone 2003 and Pocket PC Phone Edition 2003 devices. You also need Exchange 2003 (RTM and upwards). This application has been remove from download, but only works with 2003 devices anyway.
2) GAL Lookup in the Exchange 2003 (MSFP) and Exchange 2007- In Windows Mobile 5, 6, 6.1, xxx, some of the capabilities in the Global Contact Access application have been integrated into the OS. You won't need to install the application as the functionality is native in Windows Mobile devices.
What's missing from the capabilities - well you can't do free/busy lookups. It is possible to bulid your own free/busy lookups using EWS.
So you can perform Global Address book lookup on your Exchange Server from your smartphones. Its a native feature !Cheers Wayne

- SandBlaster,
Tutorial: When you are creating an email on Windows Mobile Proffesional 6.1 - type the pesons name into the "To:" field. Then Click Menu -> Check Names -> Menu -> Company Directory. This should search your company directory.

- Is it possible to make the check of the GAL automatic?
So instead of menu --> check names --> menu --> company directory I can just type the first few letters of a persons name and have it autocheck? Just like you would while using Outlook on your desktop?
This is not supported, due to the large about of users in most Exchange deployments. This type of lookup is impractical in production as the index is very large. You can search the company directory from the TO: field. Once you have partial typed the name, click Menu -> Check Names -> Company Directory. This will search the company directory for that name.

hi all,
Is possible make a cache form GAL in Windows mobile, using activesync?
- Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to choose additional fields to be returned when doing a Company Directory search from a Windows Mobile device? For instance, if I wanted to have the street address of a contact returned, or additional attributes within their AD user object... is there someway to customize the search? We are running Exchange 2003 SP2 - thanks!
