What are the basics checkups that we can do in Exchange 2007 without any monitoring tools?

What are the basics checkups that we can do in Exchange 2007 without any monitoring tools?

The monitoring prog like SCOM can help but I'm just curious to know what manua verification we can do. Is there any blog or link I can read?
