Limit email to internal addresses only

I am being asked by the President of the company whether this is possible. We have several employees who only need access to internal email addresses. He wants to limit the addresses that someone in this group can send to to our domain only. They would still be able to receive emails from any location, just can't send. I am not sure whether they would be able to respond to a received email, but if I can do that also I am sure it would work. I am running SBS 2003 R2 with Exchange 6.5. Please let me know if there is a solution.

Is anyone else getting alerts for the Exchange 2010 Text Messaging Delivery Agent Connector in the latest Exchange 2007 MP for SCOM 2007 SP1 because source servers from different sites are in the connector?

Every 2010 Hub Transport server is a member of this connector regardless of AD site so I think the 2007 MP may need to ignore this condition.

Source servers belonging to different Active Directory sites were detected for connector 'CN=Text Messaging Delivery Agent Connector,CN=Connections,CN=Exchange Routing Group (DWBGZMFD01QNBJR),CN=Routing Groups,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=OrgName,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=contoso,DC=com' in routing tables with timestamp 11/11/2009 3:33:02 AM. Only the closest site will be used and load-balancing will be affected.

OWA Connectivity test fails for Exchange 2007 MP on SCOM 2007 SP1

We've imported the latest SCOM 2007 SP1 MP for Exchange 2007 and our OWA connectivity tests fail. The test accounts are all configured as far as we can tell and are not locked out. Has anyone run into this before? My searching yielded results for folks not using SSL, but we are. I should mention our internal OWA URL is load balanced between multiple CAS servers. All Exchange 2007 servers are SP2.

Logparser to count Exchange emails sent and received

I am trying to determine how many emails that have been sent and how many emails received by Exchange for a 1 week period. From my research, there's no easy way to do this so I'm trying it with Logparser. But I still can't get it right. Does anyone know how to find this information with Logparser or another free utility?

SCOM 2007 and Logical File fragmentation alerts - Exchange 2007

Hi all

SCOM 2007 upgraded to R2 last week, 3am on Saturday it ran the "Logical disk Fragmentation level" alert monitor and has reported that every one of my Database LUNs is fragmented over 90%.

6 Active\Passive SCC custers on Windows 2008, Exchange 2007 SP1. 28 Storage Groups per Server, 4 ISCSI luns allocated to each server for the Databases, 7 Databases on each.

The alerts are as follows:

""The disk I: (I:) on computer "EXMB05A.domain" has high fragmentation level. File Percent Fragmentation value is 92%. Defragmentation recommended: true.""

What I am after is a reasonable way of determining what exactly this means and what should be done? I want to understand how this level of fragmentation occurs (Any documentation references appreciated) and whether it is truly essential to defragment urgently. It seems to be that this high level of fragmentation is reached very easily on our systems. The LUNs in question do also hold the indexes for the databases.

Any ideas of how to approach this? Running file defrag very frequently is something I want to avoid (Online maintenance happens every night for 4 hours and takes only 2 days to perform a cycle for each Storage group - so internal DB fragmentation should not be an issue).

I would like to know if there is a way to monitor user activity on OWA and mailaccounts.
Once a month or so we have an outgoing mailqueue of 15.000 Mails and i´m not able to find out from which direction the intruder is sending these mails. Funny thing is, the sender emailadress is not even an email adress of our domain.

Right now í´m trying to harden the security in our Exchange Server 2k3 SP2 described in some articles i found at msexchange.org.

Is there a way to run a query on all mailboxes and copy the resulting items I want to look for to a pst file? If so, how would I run a query to copy any items that contain @something.com and/or @somethingelse.com from all mailboxes on my Exchange system?

Messages Queued for Submission High

We are running Exchange 2007 SP1 RU9 in CCR mode on Windows Server 2003 SP2

On one cluster the send queue is high. This started at 15:30 yesterday at 66 messages and is still at 66 now.

We have 21 Storage Groups, most are at zero except the following:
SG3 @ 34
SG1 @ 22
SG17 @ 10

A failover normally clears this issue but we have seen this before (the queue was up at around 3000) and it was due to corruption in a calendar

This time the eventlogs show a high number of EXCDO warnings (eventID 8230), but nothing specifically to one mailbox

SG3 has had ESEUTIL /d run on it a few weeks ago

Is this something that anyone can help with?

Application pool worker process is unresponsive

Hi,
We are running SCOM 2007 R2 with our Exchange 2007 systems, and for both of our CAS Servers (which are running Windows 2008 SP2) I'm getting LOADS of "Application pool worker process is unresponsive" for several of the app pools the Exchange web apps are using.

I can't think of anything "special" about our setup apart from the fact that it is initially set up with a lot less RAM than it has now, as we added ram to these VMs when they were put in production.

Any pointers and tips on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated

MSExchangeIS Mailbox: MOM Alert regarding Messages queued for Submission

We are getting a MOM alert informing us that the messages queued for submission are at 26, which is above the threshold of 15. This number has been at 26 since 1AM today (now 11:45AM). Mail is flowing normally and there are no other backups. Is there a way I can view this submission queue on our mail database server? We have 2 hub transport servers that do not show any delays or problems so I am wondering if there are just messages caught in there.

I saw a related post from December 08 where it was listed as a known issue. Is this still a known issue? My exchange environment is currently SP1 w/ Rollup 8.

I have already upgraded SCOM 2007 to R2 and have downloaded the actual solaris 9 and 10 modules for it.
When I use the wizard the following occurs, for solaris 9 it gives me an openssl error.
When adding solaris 10 The wizard picks it up no problem, but the state never goes way from saying "not monitored".
What am I missing here.

I am looking for a tool that I can install on the computer that when the user uses a program that goes out to the internet I can trace the ip addresses it goes to. Example. I use a credit card program I put the information and click submit, after submit it would connect to a specific website to process the credit card info, I want to know the ip address of that website so anything after submit I want to trace the ip address.

I am looking for information on how to implicitly invoke performance monitor for windows application and capture windows application activities(features example: scheduling job, executing job for IT scheduling services application) and system resources utilization.

I am planning as follows:

1. To have windows service and have performancecounter component.

2. This windows service invokes automatically when ever windows application is active

3. Performance counter component will be tagged to windows service.

4. This windows service should identify the active processes and pass the processe(s) information to performance counter component.

5. Performance counter identifies the category of performance based on process information.

6. And will capture performance for the identified category and will store the details into database

Please guide me if you have any idea on this.

Exchange and DCOM traffic

I have a question. We have recently centralized our Exchange environment. I have 3 servers running server 2008 Standard. The Exchange 2007 environment is runniing off 3 servers. 1 Mailbox, 1HubTransport, 1ClientAccess. I am setting up rules on my packet shapers for outbound from corporate (the office with the exchange server) to the branch offices. I'm noticing that the exchange servers generate SMTP and DCOM traffic across the WAN. Does anyone know why Exchange needs two protocols? I'm confused as to the purpose of the DCOM traffic across the WAN.

For example - without the filters on the packet shapers, Exchange and DCOM will run at the maximum of the pipe - in this case a T1. So DCOM and Exchange (SMTP) will basically kill a remote office's WAN unless the filters are applied. That's fine - just what does the DCOM do - what is its purpose?

Also, is there 'best-practice' documentation for a centralized exchange environment with a corporation having several branch offices and the exchange all at the corporate office?

Hi Everyone,
I have been looking at various monitoring tools to give me the best picture of the network and server environment.

I have looked at Solarwinds, but it's very costly.

I have looked at Nagios and Cacti, which seem great, but can be difficult to configure for someone who is new to it (and doesn't know Linux.)

I manage a mid-level enterprise with approximately 30 servers and 10 sites. I have 2 servers dedicated to network management and monitoring (ready for.)

What product is best to let me know at 2 in the morning, if a server hard drive fails, if a WAN connection fails, if the information store crashes etc.

We have discussed MOM but don't know where to start and I don't want to write a business case for new purchases before we know what other people are doing.

Ideally I would like to get the alert sent by email to a smart phone (Nokia or Windows Mobile.)

Love to hear your ideas and experiences.

My office has a freedom of information act regarding outgoing mail activity from the office. How can I access the exchange server database to extract information to answer the request. Specifically I would need the outgoing e-mail addresses and originating e-mail addresses that are stored in the database.

Test-Mailflow runs continuously. Is this normal?

We are journaling all mail. In the journal mailbox, we can see that Test-Mailflow is generating a message every two to four minutes. These messages have the following characteristics:

From: SystemMailbox{hex GUID pointing to our test mailbox server}
To: SystemMailbox{hex GUID pointing to our test mailbox server}
Subject "Test-Mailflow <some changing hex data here>"
Body: This is a test message from Test-Mailflow.

We also see the corresponding "Delivered" response messages going back.

Is this normal behavior? I can not find any documentation on the Test-Mailflow cmdlet that explains how or why it might run continuously. How do we stop this?

This was first noticed after updating Exchange 2007 SP1 to Rollup Update 7, but may or may not be related. We have three Windows 2008 servers in our test environment, with roles assigned as CAS, Hub, and CAS+MBX. This is happening on the test servers but not on our production servers, which are running the same software/hardware platforms as test.

Full Access Permission to a database Exchange 2007

Hello,

We are running Exchange Server 2007 SP1. I would like to grant an administrative account Full Access Permission to all users on a database. This would allow the account to open any mailbox on the database through OWA. I have found several commands to do this through the Exchange Management Shell. When complete the commands I used did add the user to all accounts on the database. However, when I try to open a mailbox through OWA it gives me the message "You Do Not Have Permission to Open this Mailbox". I have waited over two hours for the replication cycle to complete. If I remove the administrator account from a mailbox and add it back individually, I can access the mailbox. Can anyone tell me how to add our administrator account to have Full Access Permission to all accounts in a database? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

A customer wants a report where he can see which mail has been blocked because of reached Mail size limit (in- and outgoing).
Is this possible with the Exchange server (without extra tools)?

The customer does not specify which information the report should contain. He just said he want a protocol with declined (because of to large mail size) mails.

I would achieve these 3 results on Exchange 2007:
1) An Exchange Server Administrator must be blocked from view Protocol Logs and Tracking Logs
2) Every Administrative operation on Exchange 2007 must be logged
3) Exchange Administrators must not delete logs where have been tracked administrative operations, or, if this happens, the delete operation must be tracked in other logs...

Any hints about a strategy to obtain this??

Perfmon Disk Counters and RAID systems

Hi,
I've recently started baselining my boxes and also investigating performance issues and have run into one issue that I cannot seem to resolve, namely how to interpret perfmon disk counters when dealing with underlying raid 0, 1, 5 & 10 disk systems.

The reason I'm asking is that the first time I noticed one of my sql boxes with very high disk queue lengths and % disk time numbers I started investigating this and have only found a couple of references including a couple of confusing formulas.

Is there some kind of official or known way to interpret disk counters in windows when dealing with underlying hardware raid systems?

Hello All,

My Exchange 2007 SP1 RU 4 which is on Server 2008 using CCR for clustering, keeps alerting me to Messages Queued for Submission.

On a quick search I have found http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/32640044/msexchangeis-mailboxmes.aspx which seems to lead to a 'known' issue.

Has anyone else experenced this? Is it a known issue? The _Total value across my 12 stores is only 50 at this point, but i would love to know more about what it means and if it is really a problem.

I looking for an idea and scripts(csripts or any) how to delete the meeting organizer in outlook who is no longer in the AD(mean that no longer work at the company).
One of my company branch office, the staff turn over is very high. sometiome the staff make a recurrence booking and left company left office in a short noticed. this causing some of the staff not able to delete the booking and rebooking the time eventhough the staff already left from the company. so in order to make it easy, the script will check the excahnge legacydn and company the resource mailbox. if the user legacydn is not inside the legacydn, the script will do the cleaup organizee on the particular resource mailbox(room mailbox).

Verify inbound SMTP email is always arriving

I'm looking for a monitoring product for Exchange 2003/2007. I need this to verify that we are always receiving inbound SMTP email. We have multiple SMTP servers in front of our Exchange server (3rd party spam filter is one of them). One of our main reoccuring issues is that for various reasons our Exchange server will stop receiving inbound SMTP email. It could be a network issue (between our data center and corporate office) or one of the proceeding non-Exchange SMTP servers stops forwarding it. There are no problems with Exchange so monitoring Exchange services, queues, etc has not helped. The only way we typically find out about this problem is when users report that we aren't receiving email from the outside. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking a monitoring product might help, but it may be a service or some other solution. Basically how do you know when you stop receiving SMTP email without sending tests or relying on users telling you?

I am getting the following alerts in MOM 2005 while monitoring some Server 2008, Global Exchange 2007 clusters. Each cluster has 2 physical nodes that are located on different subnets. Not sure if it is relevant or related, but the cluster has a shared network name/resource that has 2 IPs associated, but each IP has been set with only one possible owner. Is this telling me that there is a problem that can be corrected, or is this just a result of global cluster that can be ignored?

Description:

Some of the Replication Health transactions failed.

The initial event reported:

Medium priority system health checks have issued warnings. The local server is an active node of a Mailbox server in a cluster continuous replication environment that does not contain a passive node.
ClusterNetwork:
Network 'Cluster Network' used for client connectivity is up but node 'SERVER1' does not have a Network Interface Card configured on it. Check that a NIC is configured for this network and is enabled.
Network 'Private' used for client connectivity is up but node 'SERVER1' does not have a Network Interface Card configured on it. Check that a NIC is configured for this network and is enabled.
