Duplicate a DNS entry for backup

    Question

  • Hi everybody,

Hope I'm in the right forum.

In my company, my mail server (hosted on a remote site) can be reached by a private IP through a VPN connection and a public IP through Internet. We encounter VPN issues sometimes.

On our DNS servers, I have an entry that associates the DNS address webmail.mycompany.com to its private IP. I would like to get users to be redirected automatically to the public IP address if the private one cannot be reach.

Is it possible to do that with 2 DNS entries ? If yes, I assume the feature Round-robin must be disabled ...

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Hi,

you can make an adiotnnal record using same hostname and different IP, but this will indeed cause round-robin behavior.

Your solution will not resolve the issue. Instead I would recommend to investigate in what circumstances the connection fails anf try to resolve the real issue there!

Important things to keep in mind and invetsigate are the gateway and dns servers used by vpn users.
