SQL Server Agent not running

    Question

  • Hello,

SQL Server Agent is not running. How to know:

    - When it stopped? and why?

    - When it was running last?

I could not see anything in the System or Application logs.

    Thanks,
    Dom

There is a set of Agent logs available in the LOGS directory (the same as the engine log directory) that will answer these questions.

If you see 9/3/2013 11:48:18 AM sql server agent started .

    >>Why it stopped

Its highly unlikely that agent will start by itself probable causes

1 SQL server service start (check SP_READERORLOG if its start time is 11:48 and data mentioned above then it was sql which forced start)

2.Windows box restart( see from uptime of the server)

3.Manual start of Agent ( difficult to find unless Audit is there)

Did you checked errorlog completely because if it is manually restarted there would be message like SQL agent configuration changed from 1 to 0...

  • Hello Dom,

Just to clarify, which Edition of SQL Server are you using? If it's the Express Edition: Since version 2008 also the SQL Server-Agent is installed together with SQL Server, but it's not part of the feature set of the Express Edition and therefore you can't start the Agent.
