2008 Timeouts issue

    Question

  • Hello,

Recently the production database had timeout complaints, say, when activity is heavy, system is busy, then timeout starts to increase... anyway, in normal time, production database is running well, is there any way to resovle this timeout issue?

    Thank you very much!

  • As a first measure,You would like to ensure the problem is with database.

When time out error comes? Is it for particular application activities or whenever database is busy (in business hours or maintenance hours)?  If users connect across network, please make sure there is no connectivity problem.

I suggest to find the offensive queries.  In Activity Monitor, you can see "Activity - top sessions " or "performance- Top Queries by cpu" or so.  Then you can start troubleshooting.

Here a couple url to guide.

  • what is the error message that you are getting .usually timeout can occur for differnt reasons-

1.when the server resourcese utilization is high like CPU,Memory . if your sql is taking more time then check

what activity is running and who is the culprit.

2.Application timeout issue can occur when improperly they being called.

3.If you are database files autogrwoth not configured properly.

4.When no optimization Ran on any databases for long time.

5.Timeout value set for the database engine without testing properly.

so provide the complete error message what issue it is along with your sql server version .

  • Hey,

    Thank you very much all!

I think it is application's problem. (for example, missing indexes cause locks, then produce timeouts)

I will look into it based on all friend's suggestions.

    Thank you very much again.
