Always On availability groups between Windows Azure regions

    Question

  • Hello.

I want to configure SQL Server Always On availability groups between Windows Azure virtual machines in different regions. One machine would be in a data center in Europe and one in Asia. Is that even possible? Cannot seem to find much information about Always On cross-region. I have looked into mirroring instead but I need both databases to be readable.

    Thanks!

    /Niklas

    Hi

currently it does not appear to be supported ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/windowsazure/jj870962.aspx

'You cannot have a Windows Azure-only availability group across Windows Azure datacenters because cross-datacenter virtual networks are not currently supported in Windows Azure, and an active directory domain cannot span multiple Windows Azure datacenters.'

  • I think you are right. Thanx Kevin!

Any idea when this will be supported?

  • Hello,

What if we have VPN tunnels established between two Azure datacenters and there is complete network connectivity between two virtual networks? How should you configure the listener?
