SBS 2011 Backup Failures - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Unknown error (0x800423f0)...

    Question

  • Hi,

              I'm experiencing a problem when initiating a backup on my SBS 2011 Standard Server, I am receiving the following error:

    ‘The backup operation that started at @2011-07-22T10:04:09.931000000Z’ has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation
    to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with the following error code ‘2155348129’.  ‘

    The ‘Configure Server Backup’ wizard completed and configured the backup device (a 2TB WD Elements external USB drive) without issue.

    Can anybody shed some light on this or point me to a thread that might have addressed this problem in the past.

  • By any chance did you just install SharePoint sp1?

    If so look at the sticky post at the top of this forum where you need to
    run psconfig to get backup working again.

  • Hi Susan,

        Yes, I did install SharePoint sp1 update - thank you for your help.

    This artical identifies the solution to my problem, I hope it is generic!

  • "Generic?"  Not in the usual sense of the word.

    "Universal?"  Yes, in that every instance of this service pack must be followed by the psconfig command.  That is why the blogs and articles about it are there.

  • Yes this looks like the answer ;the Sharepoint PSCONFIG is required to be run else the VSS fails for the SBS.

    In my case it failed to backup from the parent 2008 RS server failing the whole backup as the SBS server is a VM and the Premium add-on server is another VM

  • I have seen this on three SBS 2011 servers now.

    Making sure all the updates are installed is a good start.

    This then necessitates rerunning the Sharepoint Configuration Wizard.

    Check any utility partitions are covered by VSS and have sufficient space.

    Restart of course!

    If you need any assistance with this please contact me via www.mtechnical.co.uk

  • Hello guys,

    I have just ran into this problem.

    After i looked here : http://waynestorey.com/blog/2012/01/18/windows-backup-fails-with-event-id-521-error-code-2155348129/ i found out it was not the psconfig thing he sugested but the vss writer.

    I gave the command "vssadmin list writers" in a command promt and saw this :

    Writer name: 'SqlServerWriter'
       Writer Id: {a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}
       Writer Instance Id: {bb0246cd-635f-4618-870d-6d259a419e74}
       State: [8] Failed
       Last error: Non-retryable error

    So i entered Services and stopped the Sql Server Writer .

    After that the backup started succesfully.

  • Thanks to Seap89, this was the solution for me.

    When I run the command "vssadmin list writers" the SQL Server Writer was showing an error. When I stopped the SQLWriter services the backup was running fine.

    Note: We have removed SharePoint already because we don't us this.
