IE9 on widnows 7
-
Wednesday, December 26, 2012 8:21 PMI have a client with a relativity new computer. Ie 9 will not run ( Freezes non stop) unless you launch it as administrator. I have removed all tool bars, all adon's i have set it back to default. I have uninstalled 9 and rolled it back to 8 then re-install 9 and have the same issue. Chrome works fine.. Is there a way to completely clear out the ie install files and install a clean fresh copy? i cant justify a clean install of windows because there are no other issues. NO viruses cleared out all malware. etc..

Assuming Win7 (64-bit) SP1...
Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply, preferably without quoting my post:
1a. When (approx. date) did your client purchase the computer?
1b. Did Win7 64-bit come preinstalled on the computer when your client bought it, did your client do a clean install of Win7, or did your client upgrade from Vista to Win7?
2. What is the full name of the installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does the current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?
3. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since your client bought it?
4. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if he never used or Activated it.)
5. Are ALL of the following updates listed in View installed updates (not Update History)? [1]
(a) KB2761465, KB2753842 [and/or KB2753842-v2], KB2779030, KB2758857 & KB2770660;
(b) KB2727528, KB2724197, KB2661254 & KB2749655;
(c) KB2705219, KB2712808 & KB2731847;
(d) KB2698365, KB2691442, KB2655992 & KB2719985 [or possibly KB2721691];
(e) KB2685939; KB2676562 & KB2644615.6. Is Java Version 7 Update 10 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER (ONLY!) => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
7. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.5.502.135 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER (ONLY!) => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
8a. Is Firefox or any other alternate browser installed other than Chrome?
8b. Is Internet Explorer or Chrome the default Browser?
9. Is your client in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner Registry Cleaner)?

Thursday, December 27, 2012 8:00 PMThey bought the computer about 6 months ago. it came with windows 7 pre-installed on it. They originally used mcaffee but we moved them to AVG after they got a virus. We cleaned up the computer and every thing was well. They called a few weeks later saying there was an issue with ie. Never used norton. all the latest windows updates are installed. i updated java and flash. I have completely uninstalled ie. and re-installed it. it is currently the default browser. ABCNEWS is the home page and it wont leave it. I have set it to google and once the home page loads it dead. the only reg clean programs we use is MICROSOFT REG Clean. The only other programs installed are malwarebytes and spybot.. those add-ons are also turned off. No fire fox.

[1] They bought the computer about 6 months ago...They originally used mcaffee but we moved them to AVG after they got a virus. We cleaned up the computer and every thing was well. They called a few weeks later saying there was an issue with [Internet Explorer]...
[2] the only reg clean programs we use is MICROSOFT REG Clean...1. Was the McAfee subsciption or free-trial period still valid when the computer got infected?
2. Did you (a) uninstall the McAfee application AND THEN (b) download/run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool & reboot (c) BEFORE you installed AVG Free (I assume)?
3. Were the Java & Flash Player versions outdated when the computer got infected?
4. Was the computer fully-patched at Windows Update when it got infected?
5. Did you install AVG Free before or after you got the computer "cleaned up?"
6. How did you determine the computer was no longer infected? [It would appear that was not the case.]
7. Do you understand that RegClean is not a Microsoft application? [1]
8. Do you understand that you cannot "uninstall" Internet Explorer - completely or otherwise - on a Windows (client) computer?
The above rhetorical questions notwithstanding & absent your answers to all of the questions in my first post above
Chances are you're still seeing the effects of an ongoing hijackware infection. See...

[1] Injudicious use of registry cleaners may be playing a role here. TIP: If you ever again think your Registry needs to be cleaned, repaired, boosted, tuned-up, cured, tweaked, fixed, maximized, "swept" or optimised (it doesn't), read http://chris.pirillo.com/are-registry-cleaners-safe-to-use/ and/or http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/04/why-i-dont-use-registry-cleaners/ then draw your own conclusions. 3 not sure, after I cleaned it i updated both. always do
4 don't know ( not my computer)
5 before
6 I scanned hard drive with my tech computer.. I have compiled a list of procedure to clean a compute over the last 8 years.
7 perhaps not.. been using it for years, its just a batch file doesn't install just says Microsoft on it and email us at regclean@microsoft.com
8 yes, ( splitting hairs)
found no solution, so uninstalled sp1 then did a " UP-Grade" via the cd, ( since repair install no longer exist) re-installed updates / java / flash etc seems to be fixed...( love me some google chrome.)

The RegClean utility is no longer supported and has been removed from all Microsoft download sites.

Your original reply, you stated...
<QP>
found no solution, so uninstalled sp1 then did a " UP-Grade" via the cd, ( since repair install no longer exist) ie is still jacked up.
</QP>Now you've edited your post to read...

found no solution, so uninstalled sp1 then did a " UP-Grade" via the cd, ( since repair install no longer exist) re-installed updates / java / flash etc seems to be fixed... [emphasis mine]
</QP>What "updates" did you install in the ~3 hours since you made your original post?
Were Java Version 7 Update 10 & Adobe Flash Player v11.5.502.135 in fact not installed?
Is Firefox or any other alternate browser installed other than Chrome?
Is Internet Explorer or Chrome the default Browser?
[Answering ALL of the questions in my first reply may have saved you quite a bit of time (and your client some money)!]
