Hi,
I am new to FIM and BHOLD, i have FIM in and running fine, 1 server for FIM service and Sync Service, 1 server for WSS and FIM Portal plus a SQL server for the DB
I am now installing BHOLD on another server, DB the same SQL server as FIM, i have installed BHOLD Core and BHOLD FIM Provisioning with out any problems, however i cannot install the BHOLD FIM Integration on the FIM service server, on the BholdFim setting page i get a message "The application group name cannot be empty" I am following the MS Install guide.
Has anyone come across this problem?
Chris

Yes, I have lived through that pain.
Unfortunately, BHOLD installation process is half baked & is not really ready for prime time. Currently, it seems to support ONLY one server solution as against a fully resilient multi-tier FIM architecture. Even though the TechNet documentation says this scenario is supported, I never could really get it working.
The error which you saw is because, the installer is expecting for BHOLDApplicationGroup in the registry keys. One way you can offer it is by means of MSI Switches. However, once you get past that you will see it complaint for other keys. Another option is to simply copy the BHOLD registry keys from the BHOLD Core Server and continue with the process.
However, I had given up on making it work as the installer started throwing up one after another.
The configuration which got working for me is :- FIM Sync Service (1 machine)
- SQL Server (1 machine with all FIM DBs and BHOLD DB on the same instance)
- FIM Service+FIM Portal+Entire BHOLD Stack (1 machine)
Hope that helped,

Hi Jameel,
Assuming we are stuck as you state that BHOLD stack forces the FIM Service and Portal to be on the same machine with the BHOLD stack, do you think that this combined stack can be scaled horizontally? e.g.
E.g.- Server 1: FIM Sync Service (1 machine)
- Server 2: SQL Server (1 machine with all FIM DBs and BHOLD DB on the same instance)
- Server 3: FIM Service+FIM Portal+Entire BHOLD Stack
- Server 4: FIM Service+FIM Portal+Entire BHOLD Stack
Obviously with a NLB to load balance the web browser and web-service connections.
Or do you think there is something in BHOLD design that prevents horizontal scaling?
