SAN Solution

Hi all, we are in the market for a SAN solution. So far i have looked at solutions from Dell, IBM, HP and Compellent. At a very basic level all of these seem to offer the same thing(s). This is our first SAN deployment. I can use advise/feed back from those of you that have deployed/researched SAN's before.

Any experience/expertize you can share is much appreciated.

Hi All,

I just got hired on at a company that is at 100 people growing at about 10 new people per week. We now have 2 in the IT department and we are becoming insanely disorganized. All of our requests come in via email or in person, we do not use telephones. I am wondering if anyone has had good experience with a small or customizable ticketing software? I checked out Frontrane Solutions: Heat, but wasn't very impressed.

WMIC - remote installation

Hi all,
I’m trying to remotely install MSI program through WMIC but I’m having some difficulties.
This is what I’m running:
"wmic:root\cli>/node:192.168.1.10 /user:domainname\username product call install true,"" , "c:\themsi.msi"
its working fine on my computer but I get this error while running it on a remote one:
192.168.1.10 - Invalid node (discarded)"

then it asks for my password and then show this error:

"ERROR:
Code = 0x800706ba
Description = The RPC server is unavailable.
Facility = Win32"

And that’s it.
Can anyone please help me? Is it my firewall?

Log off user after 2-3 days of inactivity. But leave all other users under 2 days untouched.

Just want to start off by saying I'm a noob so bear with me.

Background: We have multiple fire stations running Vista Business where there could be 20 users logged onto the PC at any given time, thanks to "fast user switching" We encourage fast user switching its just, the users never log off and after weeks of not rebooting its starting to cause issues.

Goal: I' am trying to write a script or a task that will run that would log off users who have been inactive for 2-3 days. I do not want this to affect the others users who are already logged on the the PC.

Dear community

I want to install a KMS host for our environment.
I've read in different MS white papers, that there's a minimum of machines neccessary to activate them trough KMS.

In a first part, we plan to only activate 1 W2k8R2 server and 1 vista client.

In the white paper, you can read the following part;

KMS volume activation requires a minimum number of physical Windows clients: five (5) for Windows Server 2008, or twenty five(25) for Windows Vista. However, KMS does not differentiate between the two systems when counting the total number of clients. For example, a KMS host with a count of three (3) Windows Vista clients and two (2) Windows Server 2008 clients would activate the two (2) Windows Server 2008 clients because the cumulative count is five (5) clients. But KMS would not activate the three (3) Windows Vista computers until the total client count reached twenty-five (25). Each time a new machine contacts a KMSHOST, it is added to the count for thirty calendar (30) days, after which its record is deleted, similar to Time-To-Live (TTL) for Domain Name System (DNS) records.

=> Is it possible to activate only 1 or 2 clients?
I've only 2 clients, not 5 or 25. So 'KMS would not activate the vista clients until the total client count reached twenty-five'.
It's counted for 30 days.

How I should proceed?
Is there no way for?

I'm really confused about this information.
Can anyone clarify ?

As a Network Administrator, I should know the answer to this question. How can I send a message directly to the screen of all the users on my domain about system outages or other important messages on my 2003 Windows Network? I know there is a way, but the answer has elluded me so far.

As the market has new figures and growing opportunities which are linked to software development, we always need to keep updated and know about recent trends, for example delivering translation services safely, all related to Information Security.

Would a main client trust their information to be processed on illegal software?

As you know computers are turning mobile, more and faster, so information is more likely to be disclosed or lost. For this reason to prevent disclosure use encryption systems, to prevent lost consider backup systems or to prevent both simultaneously, consider to migrate to "cloud computing" by using some collaborative sites and tools, such as Google Docs, but be aware that you are exposing your information to a third company.

It is expected that companies will increase the number of translations where one part of the information is provided to one company, and the other is provided to a different one or restricted to be translated in-company. This concept is also related to "separation of duties".

In projects where data protection is a critical factor, clients tend to trust their information only to those agencies or companies who are able to prove their information security processes reliability. I am building a new server to and have a simple question about hardware. Will I need a special case for a server motherboard? The two motherboards I am currently looking at are an Intel S5520HC and a Supermicro X8DTH-i. I understand I will need a case that accommodates E-ATX boards, but are there any other requirements? I was sure it would work, but then I saw that Intel's site only names a couple cases that are compatible with their board. Will a case such as a Zalman GS1000-SE work for either of the server boards? Also, will a standard ATX power supply work (with adequate power and an extra 8-pin CPU adapter of course).

My company is trying to impliment folder redirection and we are having an issue. We can get it to sync so long as we are logged on, but when we disconnect from the network and reconnect back to the network, it wants us to do a manual sync. Is there a way to make this automatic once network connection is re-established?

Vista and Win7 Hardware requirements

We're migrating 25 WinXP machines to Vista or Win7.
These are on a 2003 SBServer.

We are trying to make a decision on going with Vista or Win7 and
I'm trying to find out the "reasonable" hardware configuration required to run Vista or Win7.
Are they the same?

I'd love to discus the migration with someone who has gone from XP to Vista.

As the single IT person for a small law firm, I am responsible not only for the general technological welfare of my network and users, but I am also responsible for legal case support documents, web-presence, etc.

So, needless to say, I cherish any tools that becomes available to make my job easier or to help me determine if I am on the right track. Tools like the Best Practices Analyzer promised to help, but I have repeatedly found them to be riddled with errors. In fact, I ran the SBSBPA software the other day after repeated occurrences of the dreaded BSOD after inadvertently approving a Critical Microsoft Driver Update that disable my RAID controller and rendered my remaining drives useless because they were formatted for dynamic volumes, not simple.

So, my network isn't working, my exchange server is crashed, I can't get the DTC service to load, SharePoint is in various states of disrepair and to be honest, I don't think I could break anything else without pouring a soda directly onto the Motherboard.

Great time to run the BPA.

You will be glad to know that the only thing it could find was a poorly configured DNS entry for my Remote Desktop Telnet Gateway service. When I asked MS Tech support why I got this error and nothing more (even though my server was a wreck!), he said, "oh, don't worry about that error, we've known about it for a long time--it's just a bug--you can safely ingore that error." I have heard that a dozen times with SBS2008 and various BPA apps.

Even the "Critical Errors" you get in the SBS2008 console aren't really "critical" (that is unless you install them). I'm at wits ends and I just don't trust any of these tools Microsoft offers to support IT Professionals. So, how do you decide which critical updates are really critical ? How do you keep from getting overwhelmed and dissilusioned by the ineffective and bug-ridden tools you are given to trouble shoot these updates?

Any suggestions or comments would be great. Thanks for reading this, I look forward to your reply.

I have tried the admin pack for Vista and it does not work on Windows 7, when you search TechNet for it specifically it comes back with a message that you should try this search later.

It would seem that even Microsoft is not ready for 7 yet.

Comments missing from the information presented by the network browser

This is not a question as much as it is a statement concerning features removed from the later (later than XP) versions of Windows. I had posted this comment in the Windows 7 Networking forum last month. I didn't get a lot of feed back there so I thought I'd post here as well.

I've just installed Windows 7, in September, for evaluation. I noticed that as with Vista and Windows 2008 the comments column is no longer available in the Network browse list. I'm not sure why this feature has been dropped from newer releases of both the Windows desktop and server platforms in that it is a most useful feature when working in a corporate IT environment where a naming convention, one not containing user name and/or system location, is in place and used to name systems.

If you have a naming convention in place which does not include the name of a person to whom a computer may be assigned or location of the system, then trying to find a machine assigned to an individual or by location becomes impossible by using the browse list. If you use a naming convention that does include a user's name or a location then you may find, potentially, that you're constantly changing computer names as people come and go and systems get moved around. It's by far, in my opition anyway, to change the computer's comments field when a system is reassigned. Without the comment field you most certainly would have to keep track of who has which machine assigned to them in something like a spreadsheet.

Some of the concerns we have in adopting these newer Windows systems for use in our corporate environment are issue of compatibility with legacy applications and changes to the environment that makes managing a network that much more difficult. I would suggest that if you want better/faster corporate acceptance of your newer versions of Windows that you keep those of us facing issues created by what you decide to leave out of future releases in mind. I'm really suprised that Microsoft didn't get any feed back about this during initial testing. It seem to me to be a shame that I have to resort to copying code from my old Windows XP systems to my new Windows 7 system just to get back the useful features that were left behind. By the way My Network Places from XP seems to work well running under Windows 7.

I don’t normally spend much time posting in system related forums. However I don’t know how else to try and make a point. A point that I hope makes its way to a concerned developer/decision maker at Microsoft.

I was recently asked by the department head to create a Sharepoint list that has ALL information about each of our branch offices. From addresses and contacts to the MPLS circuit numbers and the model of timeclocks they have. This was to be the IT department's definitive source for information on each branch. I argued for a relational database instead of a Sharepoint list but was overruled with the argument that we want something quick and easy with no maintenance required.

Now I believe management may be rethinking that decision after I created a giant Sharepoint list with over 50 columns. They also would like it to link to a series of OneNote files where we store all the site pictures, database diagrams and rough notes for each office. Adding a hard-coded link to a OneNote sheet is easy but as a database guy myself, it seriously hurts me to see that being used as a definitive source for anything.

So the question is - Is there an existing tool somewhere than can hold relational data but also has an extremely easy to use, low maintenance front-end built in? Something I can make a few simple forms for data editing like Access but with the ease of annotation and free form power of OneNote? And it needs to be fully "queryable" for reporting.

Maybe if Access had a OneNote control of some kind that I could insert Notes into. But that would still mean a lot of up-front work creating the database and the interface. Any other ideas?

Currently All Windows Client machine are in Active Directory Domain. I am also
having Domino Directory with some users in it.
Currently I am logging into my windows client machine as a windows Client user
which is in Active Directory. In active Directory user name is XYZ .

In domino Directory there is one user named ABC.
Now i have to login in Windows Client machine as "ABC" not "XYZ".
It means request should go to Domino LDAP redirect from Active Directory.
it means i will have to configure my Domain Active Directory to communicate
with Domino LDAP.

Domino Directory user should be also able to login in Windows Domain through
Windows Client Machine.

Its my actual requirement...

How to remove the policy command prompt disabled by the administrator

Can anyone provide feedback for me on how to diaable (or where to look for the file that invokes this procedure) this policy. It was setup by my predecessor to lock down the server so users who are using RDP would not diable or shutdown the services that the server is providing. When using mmc it seems that all polices related to this function seem to be diabled and that they are not the source of the security policy that is causing the lock out.

Hello, I have recently started a new job as IT manager for a small company that is planning to grow from 25 users to 100+ within the next year. I have only had 4 years experience in my old job looking after around 20+ 5 user companies all running Small Business Server 2003.

I am looking for advice as to what things I should do/expect as I’m moving from a break/fix job to one where I will have the time to properly maintain and manage a network as it grows.

They currently use Small Business Server 2003 which I know has a 75 user limit, should I migrate now to separate Server and Exchange servers or wait till I hit the limit?

What do other people recommend as good management/monitoring tools? I have looked at and considered Spiceworks (www.spiceworks.com) but have no experience with it.

Any other useful software that people recommend?

backing up dpm storage pool

Hi,

Is there a way to do full backup of one dpm's storage pool to external hard disk without using the secondary dpm?
My existing dpm server is Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2, 32-bits.
The size of storage pool for dpm is 1TB.

My main concern is, if we were to use the secondary dpm,
first, we need another server (hardware) to be the secondary dpm
second, we need to use the bandwidth (i.e., our network will become congested due to that and speed of backing up is slow).

This sounds like it could work. I run a computer store that will be offering customers migrations/upgrades to windows 7 from XP and Vista. I would like to be able to deploy Windows 7 using WDS to the client computer, but save their information (just like what happens when you install 7 on an existing OS install and it moves the data to windows.old) then automate the USMT to apply the data backup to the new installation.

Am I correct in thinking this is the best way to do this, or is there something better suited to what I want to do?
