Problem with Windows 7 license deactivating.

Answered Problem with Windows 7 license deactivating.

I work at a technical college and we have some laptops that when it connects to our school wireless network it gives a Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy is not geniune error.  We are using a MAK key.  I ran the MGA tool and got some diagnostic information.  We're using an Enterprise MAK key using SCCM for imaging.  We're using the key also from an active agreement number and we have about 800 activations left.  I found two errors in the application log:  Acquisition of genuine Ticket failed (hr=0xc004c532) for template Id 66c92374-d682-4d71-983e-d6ec-3f16059f.  These laptops are set up with a generic student account with user permissions and will sometimes log into a student wireless network.  We imaged the laptops on a domain.

I found a kb article here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2008385  and tried the solution to give the NetworkService account full control & read permissions to the HKEY_Users\s-1-5-20 hive but the account already has this.  Also these laptops have System restore disabled and somehow the original image it was disabled.  Not that this has anything to do with the license deactivating.  I really hope someone can help.

Vista article, but the code & symptoms match: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942969
Win7 article, no match for your code: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938450

I suspect your imaging method is at fault. Are you using sysprep or manually performing a rearm before you capture your image?

Well we use SCCM but were having some difficulties in learning SCCM in trying to capture an image so I used the Syprep & Capture feature in the Microsoft Light Touch deployment using MDT to create the .wim and then gave the .wim file to my co-worker and we deployed the .wim in SCCM.  Is there a way to fix this in the registry?

I brought one of the laptops to my home to test and the license isn't deactivating while surfing on my home connection.  I'm wondering if its not an issue with our network.

Perhaps the machine has successfully (re)activated, to the MS Activation Servers, via your home internet connection?
And this may not be possible via your organisation's network?

Some helpful articles in the MDT forum: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/mdt/thread/e8714e2c-f10b-4f70-aef1-732936516b24

if you run the MGA diagnostic on this machine again (now you've had it at home), or, run (elevated) cscript slmgr.vbs /dli
the situation may have changed, and either of these utilities should reflect/explain the current state.

It hasn't deactivated at home yet but I'll run the MGA tool again shortly.  Ok here it is.

Am I reading this wrong?  MDT 2010 only supports retail keys not Volume license keys.  I see there is a way to add the MAK key in two locations.  Here is the article and part of a paragraph I found.

While deploying Windows 7 Enterprise VL with MDT 2010, the typical behaviour would be to include the activation key in the customisation wizard used to create a Task Sequence for the deployment of the Windows 7 operating system. By design, the Task Sequence wizard is designed to support retail activation keys, not volume license keys. The difference is subtle, but important to the context of this scenario.

According to the article, MDT2010beta1 had this issue, but it was resolved in beta2, and is therefore not an issue (unless you are using beta1?)

No I'm using the mdt 2010 with update 1.  I guess I'll have to test this laptop if it deactivates again when I bring it back to work tomorrow because we've reactivated them and the same laptops have deactivated.

We are using Deep Freeze.  I had initially thought that was the issue also and sent several emails to Faronics.  I sent them one of our laptops that deactivated.  They said that while they had the laptop it didn't deactivate on their network.  I am at work right now and brought the laptop back to work and am connected to the wireless waiting to see if this laptop will deactivate.  Don - Thanks for all your help so far.  I really appreciate this.

Should the Software Protection Service be enabled and what is it?  I see the service is stopped but set to (Automatic) Delayed Start.

That setting is perfectly normal – it runs every time the machine boots to check the Activation/validation status, and then often sleeps until the next trigger.

It’s part of the WGA/WAT system that helps protect the PC – and also gives rise to the non-genuine notifications <eg>

If I change this service to start automatically this may cut down on our deactivations possibly?

No – it’s more likely to increase them, since the delay is there to allow other processes to complete before the SPPSVC starts work, and starting it earlier is almost certain to lead to race conditions.

I wish I could figure this out.  We're still having trouble with this.

Have you eliminated Deep Freeze as a cause/contributor?
If so, maybe it's time to log a call with MS.

    +1
All I can suggest is a call to WGA support – they may be able to help.

Don - We shipped a laptop up to Faronics support and they had it for a week and they said the laptop never deactivated when they had it.  I probably will have to call Microsoft but my boss has to approve the call.  Thanks for your help!

Buddy the SPPSVC is the main service that should be started in order to perform any activation related operation properly.

If that doesnot starts then there is some serious corruption in your machines.

Please start the service first. !!
