    I have done formating 2nd time, now I am not able to activate, I get the note that the activation key typed is already in use.

    I dont have another activation key,

    I had purchased windows vista home premium long back and had been using it withoyt any problem

    Please advise me how can activate the activation key.

    • You can reactivate your Windows Vista installation by performing the following:

    1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in: slui.exe 3 and click on the icon that appears.

    2. Type in your Windows Vista 25-character product key.

    3. Follow the instructions for phone activation (no charge).

    Can you confirm if you have made any hardware change. Also can you tell us the license channle for your Windows. Was it an OEM installation[came installed from vendor], Retail[You brought the Disk and a key from Microsoft] or Volume License[You are an Enterprise user].

    Environment 1 : If you have done any hardware change and it was an OEM installation than you cannot use your key again however you can try following Step 1 however if you  have not done any hardware change then you try step 2.

    Environment 2:

    If it was a Retail installation  and there were hardware changes then you can try Step 3 and if you have not done any hardware change then you can try Step 4.

    Environment 3: If it was an installation from a VL agrement then for sure you have a MAK key installed and that has excceded the limit. You can then follow the step 5

          STEP 1

     ---------------

    1. In CMD run the command : net stop slsvc

    2. Renamed the tokens.dat from under %windir%\serviceprofiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing folder.

    3. In CMD run the command : Net start slsvc

    4. In CMD run the command : slmgr /rilc

    5. Reboot the machine twice

    6. After 2nd reboot. In CMD run the command : Slmgr /ipk <product key>

    7. In CMD run the command : slmgr /ato

          STEP 2

     ---------------

    1. In CMD run the command : slmgr /upk

    2. In CMD run the command : slmgr /cpky

    3. In CMD run the command : slmgr /upk

    4. In CMD run the command : slmgr /rilc

    5. In CMD run the command : Slmgr /ipk <product key>

    6. In CMD run the command : slmgr /ato

    If your machine is not online or you face issue while activating over the internet, you can try activating over the telephone. dial : 8667401256

      STEP 3

     ---------------

    Dial 800-936-4900[customer central]. use your part number for the disk and get a new generated. Follow the following steps and reactivate the product.

    1. In CMD run the command : slmgr /upk

    2. In CMD run the command : slmgr /cpky

    3. In CMD run the command : slmgr /upk

    4. In CMD run the command : slmgr /rilc

    5. In CMD run the command : Slmgr /ipk <product key>                                        //Use the new key here

    6. In CMD run the command : slmgr /ato

    If your machine is not online or you face issue while activating over the internet, you can try activating over the telephone. dial : 8667401256

    1. In CMD run the command : slmgr /upk

    2. In CMD run the command : slmgr /cpky

    3. In CMD run the command : slmgr /upk

    4. In CMD run the command : slmgr /rilc

    5. In CMD run the command : Slmgr /ipk <product key>                                        //Use the older key here

    6. In CMD run the command : slmgr /ato

    -You can try activating over the telephone. dial : 8667401256

    -Also get your MAK key license limit extended. You will have to send an email to makadd@microsoft.com with the following details and wait for 5 business days.

    1. Organization Name:

    2. Requester's name:

    3. Requester's email address:

    4. Requester's phone Number:

    5. Agreement number associated with the key: This will be the enrollment number,

    or the license & authorization numbers, or the subscription number (note whether

    MSDN or MSDNAA subscription). 

    6. Product (examples: Vista, WS08 Std):

    7. Last 5 characters of product key:

    8. What is being requested - activation increase, decrease, or replacement (for

    leaked key):

    9. Business reason for the request (example: reinstallation of Vista) :  [You can say for testing]
