Extremely Slow Boot Issue With Vista 64bit SP2

Unanswered Extremely Slow Boot Issue With Vista 64bit SP2

I'm simply baffled with what to do anymore.

It all started about a month ago when I was installing Visual C# Express 2008. It included a SQL server portion of the install which required me to restart my computer. While doing this it attempted to install SP2. It took a long, long, long time to finally reboot. When it did it tried to finish installing SQL server, which also took well over an hour.

Panicked, I tried to uninstall all of Visual C#, thinking it caused an issue. I forget now exactly what happened next, but I had to restart to finish uninstalling the SQL server install. It took forever. I tried to uninstall and reinstall SP2.

After that, now my computer takes over 20 minutes to finish loading up. I turned off the graphical boot so I could see what was going on. It finishes the BIOS POST. Then it flashes a screen where Windows is loading a bunch of drivers or something. That screen flashes away.

Then for 15-25 minutes, I'm completely stuck at a screen with "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) Version 6.0 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2) 2 System Processors [8191 MB Memory] MultiProcessor Kernel". During this time the fans in my system are going at almost full bore. Then, after that time is up, the fans stop, the speaker system pops for a split second, then  I am flashed to a screen something about my two hard drives, then I boot into Vista.

I originally talked with a MS rep about this who did all sorts of stuff with my computer remotely but couldn't alleviate the problem. Then, as mysteriously as it began, it stopped. Boot up was slower than it was with a fresh install, but not terribly so. Things seemed to go back to normal. After today installing a new, possibly bad driver, I've upset it again. Everything just as it was.

I'm completely at the whims of this ridiculous load up time. I tried to boot up my Vista disk and repair, but it's the same thing. It initially goes to the screen that says "Windows is loading files" then it sits at the Progress Bar animation screen for 20 mins. Then it boots to a blank blue screen for 10 minutes. After that, it boots to the menu. The repair attempt took ~20 mins also, after which it said it failed and could not repair my Windows. Detailed information said something about Bad Driver. I tried System Restore to go back a few days before a new , but nothing works.

I've scoured Google for information on this but I can't find anything helpful. Please help?

Could it possibly be that CHKDSK is set to auto-run on boot or that something is amiss this way? I think this problem started when I accidentally tried to boot from my windows install disk, then restarted my computer before it finished. I'm wondering if that's the slow thing here.

I reformatted the harddrive and reinstalled Vista. The problem continues. I'm assuming it has to do with my second hard drive.

    Hello Takkara,

Windows Vista SP2 can cause some hard drive issues, causing them to run very slow. In my own experience, I installed SP2 twice on seperate installs on the same machine and both time it made my hard drive performance dip by over 50% causing the computer to run slower and making the bootup take much much longer. So I stuck with SP1. On your new install, did you install SP2? If you did, try to format again and install SP1 and all of the available updates except for SP2. It worked on mine.

    Takkara,

You can try to repair your MBR and run a thorough CHKDSK all the way through without interupting it. Also try a good hard drive defragmentation.

To run an MBR fix run your Windows cd and go to the repair or recovery console and press the # for your installation, then the administrative password (just leave blank if you did not set one) then it should just be a DOS window. Type "fixmbr" without quotes and type "exit" to reboot. If it still takes forever, boot from the cd again and go to the recovery console and type CHKDSK and let it run all the way through. (on a 100GB drive this could take about 45-60 minutes, on a TB drive it could take a few hours at least)

The CHKDSK will report if any errors have been found and corrected. Then type exit to reboot the machine.

The drive was set to defragment regularly as part of Vista's general suite of operations. It wasn't fragmented. I also had run CHKDSK before reformatting and it reported no irregularities. When I reinstalled Vista I installed the available updates, but this did not include SP2. So, the slowdown continues on a fresh install of SP1. I'm attempting FIXMBR and will report the results of that operation.

In addition I attempted loading up without my two video cards in SLI and with and without my second hard drive. Any hardware configuration still leads to a slow boot on the order of 15-25 minutes.

    Takkara,

You can try going into the log files and finding out what is causing the slow boot.

To do this, go to Control Panel, make sure you are in Classic view mode, go to Performance Information and Tools, Click advanced on the left, then click "View performance details in event log" to open event viewer. It will open a window showing all of the problems Windows is experiencing when loading services/events. Expect to see quite a few errors, I always do. But what you need to do is this: look through the list and double click each of the errors and warnings and look at how long it took to load. 1000ms = 1 second. So you can do the math. Which ever event or service is taking the 20 minutes to load is causing your issue and it will be shown here. Once you know the root of the problem, it will be much easier to go about correcting the issue.

    Bushpilot223,

Thank you for your help so far, however I do not believe the recent requests were fruitful. I ran the fixmbr and the fixboot functions off the recovery console, they said they executed correctly, but it changed nothing. I enabled the boot log and went to the event viewer, but there's nothing but shutdown warnings. I've attached the boot log and the event viewer results. At this point I'm at a complete loss for what is causing this besides a hardware issue. However, it was caused by a software issue. Which means it must be a drivers issue. But then why won't it show up? Haha.

So poking around in Event Viewer I went to the Windows Logs->System tab. I found the "gap" between which I'm losing time.

    Log Name:      System
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-FilterManager
    Date:          7/26/2009 10:16:39 AM
    Event ID:      6
    Task Category: None
    Level:         Information
    Keywords:
    User:          SYSTEM
    Computer:      NetworkGod
    Description:
File System Filter 'FileInfo' (6.0, 1/19/2008 2:05:23 AM) has successfully loaded and registered with Filter Manager.

    Log Name:      System
    Source:        EventLog
    Date:          7/26/2009 10:31:45 AM
    Event ID:      6009
    Task Category: None
    Level:         Information
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          N/A
    Computer:      NetworkGod
    Description:
    Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 6.00. 6001 Service Pack 1 Multiprocessor Free.

The first event I believe is the boot logger hooking in. The second is what I think must be the OS officially being booted.

Shortly thereafter I see this event.

    Log Name:      System
    Source:        EventLog
    Date:          7/26/2009 10:31:45 AM
    Event ID:      6013
    Task Category: None
    Level:         Information
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          N/A
    Computer:      NetworkGod
    Description:
The system uptime is 907 seconds.

Unfortunately I can't seem to get any more information on what's happening between those events. It's just a 15m gap.

So, it's been months since the last post. I have this problem and came here for a solution (not a loose end).
Where do I go to find out how Takkara was helped out of his Vista mess?
