Complete Backup fails to start "The backup application could not start due to an internal error:"
- I am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. When I try to run a Complete PC Backup, I get the following error:
The backup application could not start due to an internal error
The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424)
Please check your system configuration and try again.
I am assuming that the service it is referring to is wbengine. At least the error is correct; no such service exists on my machine. Since it is supposed to be part of Vista, can anyone tell me how to find it, or install it?- Edited bySantosh Kumar NairMSFT, AdministratorFriday, June 26, 2009 6:36 PMfixing thread title bug

- I had the very same problem with my Vista Ultimate 64-bit. It drove me nuts forever and there are was very little information posted for the problem. Most of the posts were from a bunch of losers saying to restore or re-register dll's....duh! Where is the challenge in restore? Anyway, I have no idea what initially caused it but it was either McAfee or System Mechanic (Registry Cleaner) that wiped me out. AS WITH ANY REGISTRY FIX (WHETHER SIMPLE OR COMPLEX), I HIGHLY recommend creating a backup of your registry before starting these steps.
1) Click Start and type in Regedit
2) Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3) Click on SYSTEM and look for folders (i.e. keys) named *ControlSet*....there may be more than one. My computer had ControlSet001, ControlSet002, ControlSet003, and CurrentControlSet.
4) Look in each of the "ControlSet" folders for the "wbengine" folder. You are probably missing "wbengine" in one or all of the folders (hopefully you have at least one folder with wbengine in there). The goal of the fix is to get "wbengine" in ALL of the ControlSet folders including CurrentControlSet. Unfortunatly you cannot simply copy and paste keys in regedit so you have to do some simple file exporting. (If you have wbengine in every ControlSet folder on your system then this resolution is not for you. Stop here and abort.)
5) Once you find a wbengine folder...right-click on the folder and click EXPORT.
6) Save the export file as wbenginefix.reg to your desktop.
7) Go to your desktop and right-click on the file and click EDIT. The file will open in Notepad.
8) Look at the key location directly below "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"
EXAMPLE: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\wbengine]
9) In Notepad, adjust the key location name to match the ControlSet folders with the missing wbengine folder (i.e. ControlSet, ControlSet001, ControlSet002, etc).
10) Click Save As and name the file wbengine1.reg (or anything you want). Dont' forget to type .reg at the end or else it will save as a notepad file.
11) Double Click on the wbengine1.reg file you just created and click OK to continue. You should get a message that the registry was successfully updated.
12) Repeat step 7-11 for EACH ControlSet folder you have. You can change the wbengine1.reg to wbenengine2, 3, 4, etc to avoid getting confused.
13) After all ControlSet folders are updated open Regedit and confirm the wbengine is in ALL of the ControlSet folders.
14) Reboot and enjoy!
Hope this helps and tell me if you are successful. - Seems I fell foul of System Mech when it fixed something and took a big bite from the registry.
I seem to have lost ControlSet002 altogether, and now some services are unavailable. I imagine exporting, editing and pasting this much would be too much and would appreciate any alternatives short of reinstalling os... I'm really missing audio :-( - And if NO folder has a wbengine entry, what next?
