I have a Dell XPS M1730 laptop running Windows Vista that would not boot today. I am getting the "An error occurred while trying to read the boot configuration data" error message.
First thing I tried was booting from the Vista CD and running the repair console. The OS is not displayed on the first screen of the recovery console but I was still able to run the Startup Repair option. This fails though saying there is no
OS loaded. I then proceeded to open command prompt and ran bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, and bootrec /RebuildBCD. These all complete, but when the BCD rebuild finishes it says there are no OS's loaded again. I found another site that
had me rename the memtest.exe file and replace the BCD file with it to get it on a lower sector to no avail.
While in recovery console I can browse the file system on the drive without any issues. I installed the drive into a desktop and am currently backing up the files in case I need to re-install the OS.
I do not think the drive is bad and would much rather fix the issue if I can than re-install the OS and all apps. Hopefully someone has some ideas?
