Proposed AnswerSwitch between windows Icon missing

Ok, my wife some how deleted the switch between windows icon on the taskbar. The 3D flip still works, but I have know idea of how to find and replace that icon on the tool bar. I searched the for it, but it only gave me the path to were the shortcut was; along with the shortcuts for show desktop and Internet explorer, I do know it's called the Window Switcher. How can I replace the shortcut on the taskbar?

    Any help would be appreciative.

    Thanks in advanced.

In case you haven't figured it out yet ... do this:

    1. Right-click on the quick launch toolbar, but not on an icon
    2. Select Open Folder from the context menu. It'll take you to the quick launch folder which should live:

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

    3. Right-click in a blank area of this folder
    4. Select New and then Shortcut from the context menu
    5. For the location textbox, input the following:

    C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe dwmapi #105

    6. Click the Next button
    7. Name it. (Flip3D, for example)
    8. Click Finish

The shortcut will now be in your quick launch toolbar.

Nice info for creating a new shortcut but dosen't really answer the original question the Notification "switch" icon is missing (I'm seeing this mostly in "upgraded" systems not new installs) there is nothing technically wrong, crtl+Start+Tab still activiates the flip feature. so far I haven't been able to find the reg entry for it - (End users frequently confuse "Taskbar" and Notification area as one and the same)

You can use the keyboard shortcut (Windows Key + 2) to access the switch between windows feature.

What you are at you are looking for is the "Switch Between Windows" Icon.

If you have not already done so, you will need to activate the Quick Launch toolbar on the taskbar to get to this again. The Quick Launch toolbar should appear as several icons directly to the right of the Start Menu Button.

    1. To activate the Quick Launch Toolbar, follow these steps:
    2. Right-Click anywhere on a blank spot of the Taskbar.
    3. Choose Toolbars from the menu that appears.
    4. Select Quick Launch from the next menu so that it is checked.

You should then be able to click on the Switch Between Windows icon now and use the Flip 3D feature.

Hi, I had the same problem.
I assume you know how to create the link again to flip3D.
To change the icon, click on the properties, then change icon.
In the location of the icon you enter %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\imageres.dll
if this doesn't work, search your computer for imageres.dll
You can find the icon of flip 3D in this dll.

    greetings,

My Vista Premium upgrade doesnt have the Windows Switcher on the toolbar menu to get the 3D windows.

It also will not let you select transparent as an option for the windows.

Is this because it was an Upgrade and not a full version?

    hhhmmmmmmmmmmmm

    Hi,
     Try this ..

1> Start - in the start search type in "windows sidebar"
2> You will get the windows sidebar icon from the search .
3> Right click on the windows sidebar icon and select "open file location "
4> It will open a windows with this location "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories"
5> From the above location , right click on the windows sidebar and select COPY .

ONCE DONE WITH THE ABOVE STEPS CORRECTLY - PERFORM THE NEXT STEP.

1> On the right side of the start button (not on the start button), place where you have internet explorer icon in the toolbar
right click at this place and select open folder .

2> It will open a windows with this location "C:\Users\sillyasu\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"
3> In this location right click and select paste .

Basically we need to paste the Windows Sidebar shortcut to this location

it should work fine for you .
Try this and let me know.

    Thank you
    Sameer

I did this exactly as you said and the flip 3d feature did NOT appear.  I have only had this computer for 3 weeks and it gets microsoft updates every 24 hours. Where did it go?

I had the same problem after installing alternative themes, which worked, but ended up disabling some Vista whoopdie-do features. The only way I could restore the icon and make the program work was by going back to the original Windumb Vista theme.

Maybe that will work for you. The only thing Vista has going for it is being pretty, and that is one of those few "pretty"things I like.

    Good luck!

what you want to do is actually pretty simple. do what UnholyOne said...

    4. Select New and then Shortcut from the context menu
    5. For the location textbox, input the following:

    C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe dwmapi #105

    6. Click the Next button
    7. Name it. (Flip3D, for example)
    8. Click Finish

The shortcut will now be in your quick launch toolbar.

next right click the new black icon and go to its properties. next in the shortcut tab click on change icon. the switch windows icon can be found in %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll

it should be one of the first icons in the list. i found that by going to the properties of the show desktop icon and seeing where that icon was held and thus %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll was where i ended up. hope it isnt too late to help ya.

The problem is not the icon. I have an icon but it goes no where. It used to work no it does not.

How do I get the exe. for it back- shortcuts I have just not the function. I followed all the directions but nothing here pertains to the functions itself that seems to have gone missing

I don't know if you figured out how to do it. But I never saw it on mine in the first place. All you have to do is go to the folder its in and drag it to the quick launch taskbar.

    Missing The File:
The windows switcher option is most likely not deleted from the program files, but if it is then find it on another PC that has it and copy it from there. Use a flash drive and copy & paste from a PC that has it then paste into the quick launch file missing it.

Searching for it works just fine. People just don't know the name of the option "windows switcher"
