I have installed a new hdd and reinstalled windows MANY times. Continue to get the same error. I have tried the steps in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/windows-update-error-code-8024a000/562845f3-78d5-42a0-bed5-e3fd39f01df7?page=1&tm=1300981142411
I have also contacted Microsoft at: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527
The contacted me once. I sent them the sysinfo files and related files and CANNOT get any response. My client has been waiting for his computer for over a week and I usually have a 1 week turnaround. Please help!

Here's the solution. I had to replace a failed hard drive in a Vista laptop. The original drive was a 200GB and I replaced it with a 500GB. I used my original Toshiba restoration CDs. I've spent HOURS troubleshooting this problem and I never would have guessed the solution -- it's the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver. It has to be updated because of the larger drive.
Here's a link to an HP support site for the updated driver. You can also find the update on Intel's site.

I don't usually post in forums but i had to say thanks to David and this community. My scenario was very similar. I replaced a 320 gig hard drive with a 750 gig hard drive. I could not for the life of me figure out why my recovery disk (that I loaded at least 8 times because I didn't want to believe that the original hard drive was bad) gave me errors with the MSOE.dll, Windows Mail and my wifi. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver allowed me to update which took care of the MSOE.dll and Windows Mail immidiately. This allowed me to update the computer and upon restarting I found out that the wifi issue had been taken care of. It was like a magical fix. I had been at this for many hours (Days), so again I say Thank You.Here's the solution. I had to replace a failed hard drive in a Vista laptop. The original drive was a 200GB and I replaced it with a 500GB. I used my original Toshiba restoration CDs. Mr. David in Bishop, thanks very much for this solution which worked beautifully on my 2008 Dell XPS 1530 Laptop. I had to replace my hard drive because my machine was freezing after start up to which there was no solution and diagnostics listed an error. I replaced my 320 GB with 500GB and couldn't get updates and searched for a week before finding your simple solution.
Thanks again!!

Saturday, June 02, 2012 8:24 PMDavid in Bishop -- I too wish to thank you for your post. My son crashed the 320G HDD in his Asus G71GX, and we replaced it with a 500G unit. I spent 3 days tearing my hair out trying to troubleshoot "Unsigned Drivers" until I ran across this. Pulled the 500G HDD and put in a 320G and the system loaded up without issue. WHOOPEE!

Sunday, June 24, 2012 3:19 PMThank you David, that same driver fixed this exact problem with a Sony Vaio laptop running Vista. I had replaced it's failed 160GB HDD with a 500GB HDD and had all other drivers installed, but was getting error 8024A000 from Windows Update. Now good to go!

Wednesday, October 03, 2012 6:45 AMThank you David - your solution worked on my client's HP dv6 notebook. I had done a reinstall of Vista H.P. using Recovery Discs on a new HDD & couldn't install WinUpdates. Nothing else worked but your solution did!

I had a similar problem after replacing a hard drive in a laptop (Advent K6000). Turned out to be nothing simpler than installing Vista Service Pack 1 to resolve issues with the new Advanced Format drive.
I took a looooong route to get there though. I didn't realise the new Seagate drive was this new Advanced Format thing. I found this thread, tried drivers but nothing seemed to suit the laptop hardware. I initialliy restored Vista to a known working drive, let Windows Update do its thing then cloned the working drive to my new drive. Booted into Vista but WU didn't work. I just assumed SP1 would've been installed as part of the WU procedure so hadn't thought to install it separately. I only stumbled upon it whilst searching Microsoft's support pages and read about a Hotfix to address a problem with Advanced Format drives.

This fixed the problem of not being able to run Windows Update and getting the error: 8024A000David,
I can only hope you read this.
Thank you SOOOO much for this! I had bought a new bigger hard drive when my old one crashed, reinstalled windows and the drivers and was just tearing my hair out at why I couldn't update windows, much less install my virus protection program of choice (Microsoft Security Essentials), etc. I was also getting tons of errors in various places and was afraid to re-upload my files and do much online until I got this problem handled - took days of attempts and re-installs, etc. before I found your post.
Thanks for helping out - you saved me doubtlessly many more hours of heartache! :-D

Hi David,
I just wanted to sum up to legion of people thanking you. My problem was the same, Toshiba laptop for which I had changed the hard drive due to the old one breaking down. This was last year at around february-march... I look over the internet for over a week but couldn´t find a solution (or maybe it´s just that I didn´t look right). Today i just thought "hey let´s look again, who knows?" and came across your post.
I downloaded the driver you mentioned and my windows update is already up and running, installing like 122 updates. Thank you so much!!!!!

Hello David:
i had to say thanks to David and this community for his answer was the solution. I had not installed a new Hard drive but had to rebuild windows using the built in restore partition on a Toshiba laptop running Vista. Could not update. Still have issues with windows update crashing but I am ten steps forward instead of 20 back. Thank you very much David, You Rock!

Monday, March 04, 2013 6:49 PMThis seems to be working for all persons except me.
I have a Sony VAIO VGN-AR51J which I replaced the original harddrive from a 250GB (at least that is what I think) to a 500GB and get this error (8024A000).
Although when I try to download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the Intel website I get this error:
"The computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"
When I check for devices that have a non-working driver or no driver at all I can't find any.
I installed an optional update from MS - KB947506 which should solve a problem to update to SP1 (running Vista x86) but other then that the system is factory reinstalled and totally "untouched".
Any suggestions?
Edit:
Tried both installing the "multi-language" version as well as the english language version of the drivers, the same error happens.- Edited by Karl Wallin Monday, March 04, 2013 6:50 PM

Monday, April 29, 2013 6:44 PMThank you so much for this answer! Our client requested we replace their failed 320 Gb HDD with a 2 Tb in their Dell XPS AiO. We knew the failing updates likely had something to do with the new HDD, but couldn't find the Driver from Dell that would fix it. This worked first try like a champ!
