Windows Explorer Refuses to Open Folders In Same Window

I have Windows Vista Ultimate SP1. Under Organize->Folder and Search Options->Browse folders I have the radio button, "Open each folder in the same window" checked. However, Vista refuses to do so and opens each folder in its own window. This does not work well for me because I end up with tons of open windows and its a pain to close them. This behaviour just started. Yesterday it did not do this. This is a fresh install with only Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005, Expression Studio 2, Adobe CS3 and InstallAware installed.

Also worth noting is that if I right click on a folder, the default action of Open is in bold. If I click it then it will open the folder in the same window. However, every time I double click it opens a new window.

Please help as I really don't want to have to switch to a third party file management tool over this.

Get Vista's Folder View To Stick

How do you get Vista's Folder View and column headers to stick? It seems to want to change randomly to Small, Medium or Large icons, and the column headers to "Date taken", "Tags", "Rating" etc... regardless of what file type is in there.

With Vista it seems that every time I change a folder to details view, the column headers are setup for Pictures and Videos i.e. "Date taken", "Tags", "Rating" etc...

How can I change it so that it sticks to "Details View", and whenever I select details view for a folder, it displays standard columns for documents such as "Name", "Date Modified", "Type", "Size"?

I have tried many of the fixes posted on various sites, but none fix the problem permanently.

If I don't find a fix soon, I am going to switch to a third party File Manager.

Desktop and Start Program icon .LNK File Associations

The file associations for .LNK files on a Vista Home Premium SP1 computer have changed from their default association to another application program, ie. Internet Explorer Picture Viewer, with the result that none of the program shortcut icons or desktop icons launch their respective programs - they all attempt to launch Explorer. Changing the file association on an individual shortcut results in all shortcuts being changed to the selected program. Is there a way to change the .LNK file associations back to the Windows default in order to relate the shortcuts to their respective application program?

Why Vista and its UI are horrible...

I'm sorry if this seems like a blatant flame, but I have to get this off my chest. As a user of computers for 25 years I can't believe my eyes with this Vista UI. Where do I begin?

The drop shadows suggest a light source that doesn't exist, nor is it consistent with any kind of light source at all. This "illusion" is thus confusing and frustrating to the eye as it attempts for a quasi realistic 3dish effect. Doesn't work and looks very amateur.
In Aero mode, the windows are transparent. Cool effect, but coupled with the drop shadow the illusion defies reality and again, is inconsistent with basic physics. How can something transparent cast such a dark and deep drop shadow? Not only does it look like a bad photoshopd effect, but it speaks to the amateur thinking of the designers.
The glowing buttons. I mean c'mon. Who thought of that? Not only is this effect completely silly, but again it is an inconsistent illusion. If it is supposed to be a real light source, it would light up things nearby with red as well. But the whole idea is lame and not professional and meant to distract you from the lameness within.
To compensate for the capricious use of transparency on window bars, the designers have to clumsily pad the window text with a "white" drop shadow so the text is visible. This is layering kludgy designs on top of bad designs to compensate for the complete lack of thought. The whole effect is thus dumb and ineffective.
Vista asks you twice to confirm everything you do. Despite the alleged secureness of this annoying feature, asking the same person who initiates an action to approve it is just assinine. Is Vista smart enough to know that the user of the physical keyboard and mouse is the same user approving the request? Apparently not. That's really stupid.
In an age where the best thinking in user interface design is to make them as subtle and unobtrusive as possible, you have Microsoft making them into a goofy carnival of effects. Shows you how completely out of touch and amateur the designers are and how they think you can be fooled with eye candy - except its candy that's been sitting in the back seat of a car on a hot summer day...

Well, my fingers are already tired and my list is too long for this post so I will leave it there. I know Vista has been out for a while, but its just an insult to intelligent people how they designed this OS. Oh, and its slower than geology...

Taskbar will not stay hidden in auto-hide

I haven't had this problem for long (A total of 1 day), but it is making my gaming experience horrible.

I dowloaded the microsoft update last night and afterwards, despite my task bar being on auto-hide, my task bar is up all the time. It never hides. I tried switching off of auto-hide and then back to it. That does make the taskbar hidden, but only until I move my cursor of it and then it will not go back into hide.

Any fixes? What should I do?

Vista Freezes Up - Can Do Nothing But Hard Reboot

My situation: New HP Media Center PC with Vista Home Premium pre-installed.

The problem: The PC freezes up completely at seemingly random intervals. I could be using a browser, trying to watch a DVD, checking my e-mail, working in Word or anything and the computer just stops responding. The keyboard and mouse are completely unresponsive and the only thing I can do is a hard reboot. There are no error messages or anything else to indicate what caused the lock-up. My USB ports still seem active (external hub lights remain on). Because Vista is OEM supplied, I have to use HP tech support and I can't even get them to understand what the problem is, let alone make any useful suggestions as to how I might fix it. I see from other threads here that other people have had similar problems. Has anyone managed ot figure out what's goin on and fix it?

Black Screen - Movable Cursor - Upon Boot

Ever since I've installed Vista, as soon as I turn off my monitor, Vista goes to sleep or hibernates; which one I have yet to figure out, let alone find out how to turn off. Well, in order for me to get back into my computer I had to push the sleep button, wait for the computer to go to sleep, and finally push the button once more to make it come alive.

This seemed to work until yesterday. I pushed the button and the thing would not go to sleep. I pushed it again and waited fifteen minutes and the thing had still not gone to sleep. Finally I gave up and performed a hot restart.

When I restarted the computer it would only come to a black screen with a cursor dead center. The cursor would move if the mouse was moved but nothing else worked. The cursor is dead center and not blinking (if that helps). Even worse, if I turned off the monitor, I see the same behavior that caused me to reboot the thing in the first place!

Another reboot and I found that the same thing happened when I tried to get into safe mode. All of the drivers seemed to load fine yet once they are done I get the black screen (of death) w/the movable cursor.

I put the install disk in and ran a memory scan (something that google suggests) and nothing! The same results appeared.

What gets me is that there is no error message and no way (seemingly) to fix this problem -- short of reinstalling the OS. The diagnostic software on the install CD reports that everything is normal. Well it's not!!! How do I find out what is hanging the system? And bonus question... How do I prevent windows from trying to save power (and thus breaking) every time I turn off my monitor?

an AMD Semperon 3000+ xp x86_64
ECS motherboard --> I'm not sure if the model.
2gigs of ddr 3200 memory
ATI (x8 AGP w/512mb onboard ram) -- again, I can't think of the model.
HP f2105 Flat Pannel Monitor.

Thank you in advance for all of your help. I run a help desk with a small company and I've tried to sell my supervisors on Vista. When I told them about my problems, it didn't help my case any. Hopefully I will find a solution to this problem so it won't effect our company when and if we begin to migrate to Vista.

One thing I noticed later. If you leave the computer on for about an our (all the while staring at that black screen) it will reboot all by itself.

Windows Explorer issue

Hi,

We are having issues with our Dell Precision M6400 NOtebook.

Since 2 weeks this machine needs to reboot 4-5 times a day because the Explorer keeps crashing.

Most often it crashes when pressing Ctrl + C on a file (any file) or clicking right mouse button. Note it does not always happen. It can go good for 9/10 times.

when it crashes there is no way to fix it. I cant kill the process, no error, just no respond. for some reason the Taskbar still works and i can still start Programs from the StartMenu, but i can do anything with files.

as i said, we need to do a hard shutdown to recover from this, shutdown from windows will hang to, so we need to do a hard shutdown.

Here is what i tried:

Cleanboot, still having crashes

Virus Scan, Malware scan (clean)

checkdisk

using process manager to kill the process, no luck here.

using system restore to restore to a point where we didnt have this issue

updated the Laptops BIOS.

this is the system:

Vista Business x64 SP2 (with Latest updates)

Dell Precision M6400 Notebook

NVIDIA Quadro FX3700

2x 250GB Raid 0

8GB RAM

(need more?)

Please let me know if you have any suggestions for testing. It costs us alot of time.

My computer after getting updates yesturday went to a black screen. I finally got an external monitor to work and got into safe mode. I went to device manager and found video driver corrupted. I reinstalled the driver and uninstalled the recent updates. I rebooted the laptop and got a screen right away. I logged in and black screen again. I went back to external monitor and checked the driver again and it showed fine. Rebooted again and still black screen with no curser and can't get the computer to show anything on the external monitor now except for a bunch of colors all the same color in each row. Almost looks like a knit weave with some flickering. Anybody got a clue what is causing this?

Language Bar Problems

Hello, my computer has been working fine, until I installed a Korean Wordbreaker dll which made my Windows Explorer crash. However, it seemed that the language bar was very annoyant. Whenever I was on a program it would make me click on the programs window again because it was forced out. Also, my screensaver just randomly stopped because the language bar just managed to do something. This is getting very irratating, how do I fix it?

Mouse deselects active window, wont respond until ctrl alt del

The problem that I'm having is that my mouse sporadically "unfocuses" my current active window when I click, and will not interact with anything onscreen. The computer isn't freezing, you can still move the mouse but can’t click on anything. You also can’t click and drag. Also the mouse looks like a standard pointer, not the spinning blue circle. There is no visible active window, it's as if there is an invisible window on top of everything else, that stops the clicks from going through. When this happens, mousing over things doesn't provoke a response; For instance - Mousing over a link in a webpage doesn't turn the cursor into a hand signifying a clickable link. The keyboard still responds perfectly, and all programs continue running normally. This occurs at any given time, while on or offline.
When this problem happens, I can press ctrl-alt-delete, and click once anywhere on that blue screen to make the mouse begin to respond again. Then I click cancel and go back to whatever I was doing for anywhere between 5 seconds and 30 minutes when the problem happens again

This computer is virus free, and I've seen others have this problem on a fresh install of Windows Vista. I have tried this mouse in other computers, and the problem doesn't happen. I've also tried other mice in this computer and it still occurs. I've been told by other who have the same problem that it "Happens with touchpads, pointing stick, wireless mouse, wired USB mouse", and possibly others as well. I'm running an OEM Windows Vista Home Premium, fully updated, MSI K9N4 SLI Motherboard, AMD 4600+ processor, Razor Deathadder mouse, Logitech G15 Keyboard, ATI Radeon 4870 HD Graphics card, and 4GB Mushkin ddr2 sdram. It also occured with 2gb of corsair ram and an 8800gts graphics card.

If you have any questions concerning hardware/software/what i had for breakfast, I'll gladly answer.
If you have any ideas, I will pretty much try anything at this point.

Search within ZIP files

A wierd thing - I cannot do a serach within ZIP files even though I have this enabled in the search options to Include compressed files (ZIP, CAB..)

I can open the ZIP file but if I perform a search across ZIP files, the search will not search within the ZIP

Hi guys, im having serious issues after regarding my nvidia graphics card. Following install of new drivers my notebook fails to boot beyond the green Vista loading bars and leaves me with just a black screen. System wont respond to anything and shows no HDD activity. If I enter using safe mode and disable my video card the system works fine. I have tried numerous driver versions from both Nvidia and HP but to no avail. Im really stumped with this one guys. Is there a way to force Windows Search to index?

Is there a brute force/manual way to get Vista to index the desired folders on my hard-drive?

From what I understand indexing takes place during idle time, and I've let my pc sit idle for several nights, yet when I search "All mail items" for my own in Outlook 2007 for example, it returns not a single result, but instead I get a box stating that indexing is still taking place. A subsequent click on that box yeilds a pop-up box stating that 6000 some-odd items remain to be indexed, and this number fluxuates up or down by a few hundred.

Any ideas what is going on? How can I remedy this and get Outlook indexed and searchable? Search worked just as expected with my earlier XP setup with Outlook 2007 and Windows Desktop Search. Why not now with Vista Ultimate? I have ensured that Indexing is configured to index my Outlook personal and hotmail folders.

Explorer Window Contents do not auto-refresh (Vista SP1)

Hello all,

I'm not sure at what point this began to happen, but I have several machines in the office that now exhibit this problem. When you do something within an explorer window that changes the content of a folder (copy/delete/move a file or folder, create a new folder, etc.), the contents of the window do not change unless I manually refresh the view (F5). Is there a registry/control panel setting that turns this feature on or off? I haven't been able to find any other info on this, and it's starting to annoy my users. Thanks in advance!

Before i start i want to tell you that I do not know to speak very good English!
If you don't have the Langugae u want in the Langugae bar you don't need any programs!
I'm from Macedonia that's in Europe. I was searching on the Internet .. But i could not find the Language i want.
So i was disapoindet!
While i was searching i found how to add the languge i want..
Right click on the langugae bar and click Settings.. Then click the button on the right ADD.. There are all langugaes

Anybody know where in the Event Viewer is the Chkdsk log readout at? In Xp it was Application - Event Properties - Winlogon. It was informful to read that in Xp after the reboot chkdsk program ran to see what it fixed and also the condition of the hard drive in the way of error's, etc.

We have just started adding Vista computers to our computer labs and have encountered a problem. Many users, who are largely unfamiliar with Windows Vista, will push the lock computer button instead of clicking on the small arrow which leads to log off. I have been able to replace the sleep button with the shutdown button via power management options. I also disabled sleep and hibernate with powercfg. The only piece still missing is to remove the lock button from its rather prominent placing so that users will be less likely to click it and then leave. Is there any way I could get log off to take its place? Any help would be great.

Plain Documents folder icon 2 x issues

Problem

The "Documents" folder appears as a plain icon when accessed via two different locations from the Vista Desktop UI and doesn't work as expected. However, the redirected "Pictures", "Music" and "Videos" folders which all follow the "Documents" folder, have their correct icons displayed under both issue scenarios and behave as expected. Any help, greatly appreciated.

These two issue scenarios are summarized below (see configuration below for summary of environment):

1. Blank (White File Icon) for "Documents" in Favorite Links or Save As...
When Windows Explorer is started, the Favorite Links pane (top left pane by default) is showing a blank (white file) Icon for the "Documents" folder/link. I would expect to see a "special folder" icon (green, open folder with documents inside) for the "Documents" folder/link instead of a blank (white file) icon. When the blank "Documents" icon/link is

clicked, nothing happens. When the blank "Documents" folder/link is right-clicked, no options to open or explore are shown. I would expect the "Documents" folder/link to redirect to the correct folder as opposed to nothing happening.

The same issue exists when "Documents" is shown through the Save As... dialog box of builtin OS applications, like Notepad etc.

2. When browsing to "Documents" via the Start Menu or Save As...
When the resulting Windows Explorer window is loaded after clicking "Documents" from the start menu, the "Documents" folder appears as a plain yellow folder icon. I would expect to see a "special folder" icon (green, open folder with documents inside) for the "Documents" link instead of a blank (yellow) icon. The folder is showing as having correctly

redirected, when viewing the "Documents" folder properties and indeed all documents and sub-folders are correctly located and accessible on the network DFS folder.

The same issue exists when "Documents" is shown through the Save As... dialog box of MS Office 2003 applications.

Steps followed to Resolve so far (still not resolved)
Have started with new build, new user, new profile etc. on several occasions but still have the same issue.
Have checked the .lnk file inside C:\Users\%username%\Links by opening with Notepad, this is encoded for the best part, though it does have 3 references to the redirected folder within the encoding. Not sure how .lnk files can be correctly edited?

Have checked the desktop.ini file in both C:\Users\%username%\Links and \\domain\users\%username%\Documents, these are provided below:

'Photos' screensaver

One of the things I liked about the XP 'my pictures slideshow' screensaver is that it gave you the option to display the file/path for the picture on display.

That feature seems to have disappeared with the 'photos' screensaver option in Vista. Is there any chance of getting the 'display file/path' option put into Vista?

Vista User Account Picture - Empty Frame in Domain Logon Screen

I'm running identical Vista Enterprise computers in a lab environment on a Windows Domain, and am having an issue with the user account picture. Namely, on the user logon screen, just above the fields for the username and password, there's a giant empty frame where the user account picture should be.

I've already replaced the user.bmp and guest.bmp, so that our company logo will show up for users in the start menu after they've logged in, and will show up in the logon window for their user name if they've locked their session, but I'm unable to get the picture to show up on the original logon screen before the user logs in.

Some group policies we have include:

Interactive logon: Do not display last user name	Enabled
Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL	Enabled

Always use classic logon

Enabled

So far I haven't found any good info that refers to this problem. I've only seen two posts on these forums that come close to the problem I'm having, but neither touch on it directly and provide a solution. They are:

Vista 64 getting message about sasnative64 program

When booting a PC running 64 bit Vista Ultimate (SP2), I get a message that says:

SASNATIVE64 program not found - AUTOCHECK skipped.

This message appears just before the login screen during the boot process. I am assuming the AUTOCHECK reference is indicating that the autocheck of the filesystem during startup is being skipped?? I have searched both Technet and even tried google for any information on this message. I have not been able to find anything. The system seems to start normally and I can login fine. I am however concerned about the long term impact of this condition. Three questions come to mind:

(1) Does anyone know what this message means?
(2) Does anyone know what actions I can take to correct the condition?
(3) What is the long term impact if I ignore the message and take no corrective action?

manually having to start explorer.exe after vista upgrade

I can not find this specific problem anywhere on the net, so I am making a new post.

I upgraded from XP Home Edition to Vista Business. Upgrade went smoothly. Logged in and all I got was 'My Documents' folder to open, and a blank desktop screen. No start menu, Windows Side bar, quick launch.. couldn't even right click on desktop. Could run anything I wanted to from inside the folder that opens on default but once I closed that only ctrl+alt+delete gets you anywhere.

Fastest way to get my desktop back .. log in, wait, wait, ctrl+alt+delete. Run the task manager, run new program, run explorer.exe ..and everything starts up like a charm.

I see that explorer.exe is already running however until i re-run the program I don't get a desktop interface to interact with. I consider myself to be an advanced computer user .. how will regular computer users solve this problem .. or am I the only one?

Sorry to be long winded just want to find a solution.. thanks for any real guru's out there who could possibly help.

Delete input languages with a script or GPO

We've got an issue where users' workstations have two French Canadian keyboard mappings installed (apparently they're part of the default install when you specify the country as Canada.) This wouldn't be a big deal except users keep hitting the keyboard combination that switches keyboard layouts. Is there a way to disable these unneeded keyboard layouts with a login script or Group Policy? I've looked into the region and language related group policy settings but didn't see one for manipulating input languages.

Hi!

Im running a version of Vista Home Premium on an upgraded Windows Media Center Edition 2005 PC and I happen to get an error. Occasionally, then I load my computer, the desktop is missing; no taskbar and no desktop icons. However, Windows Sidebar functions correctly. To solve this problem, I have to use Alt+Ctrl+Del and then go to Task Manager. I have to end explorer.exe and then run it again by manually starting it up. I am not sure if this is a bug that will be resolved in SP1 or if its just my computer's fault. Please respond, thanks!

After turning lap top on, there is nothing on the screen, totally black, no keys work. Best Buy checked hard drive, and its ok. First time this happened, a screen came on saying that Windows was corrupt and needed to be reconfigured. I thought it was a virus and turned computer off. Hello,

(in my particular case its office 2007 but I want this to work for every office version)

I have a .NET application in which I have a webbrowser control and when I load an office document in it, I want it to be opened inside the control and not create a new window.
In windows XP i tick the "browse in same window" option for the file association type and it works. In windows vista it always opens a new window.

How do I change it?

Hello,

I'm using Windows Vista Business, service pack 1.

I'm having an unusual issue with Windows Update and the Properties page of "My Computer". When I try to open either one of these pages, the window appears for less than 1 second then closes.

there are no errors in any of the windows logs.

I went to try a system restore, but nearly all of the restore points are gone. The ones that are there do not work. Any attempt to restore comes back as failed.
Cursory review of the internet doesn't yield anything that works. The restarting of the Software Licensing service doesn't work, for example.

Again, there's no errors being logged.

If more information is needed, please reply.

Vista browsing in same window option missing

I want to open Word 2003 documents from our intranet in Word but they keep opening in IE 7

does anyone know where the browse in same window option is in Vista that used to be in XP under File Types tab then Advanced button.

The only similar option i can find is under the Associate File Type options in the control panel. When i go into the .doc options it has IE and Word as Recommended Programs and the check box down the bottom is greyed out. So i can't untick it to remove IE as an application to open Word files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Missing System Restore Items

Excuse me if this isn't the proper forum for this. I was presented with this link in a response to one of my post on this at ....vista general newsgroup.
I'm using Vista Basic x32 sp2
My System Restore dialog on occasions, will be missing the area at, and below the Recommended restore selection. The command buttons
are ok. The area missing is where one can select 'Choose another restrore point'.
I haven't made any changes to the allocated space that system restore uses.
When the System restore is in this state and I click 'Next' I see only 5 or so restore points where as when it's not in this state I see many more
restore points.
I haven't installed any new software since the last time I checked to see if it was ok.
I've posted a couple times on microsoft's newsgroup ....vista.general and I can't even find anyone that has experienced this.
I'm use AVG Free as my anit-virus software and PcTools Desktop Maestro for system maintenance.
Would be nice if I could somehow paste an attatchment of a screen capture so you can see what I mean.

Any help will be appreciated
