- Hello. I have a brand new HP Pavilion dv1000 notebook that is Vista Capable. I ran the Vista new install and every part for my laptop has a Vista driver except for the audio. It is conexant cx20468-31 ac97 audio driver eq. HP only has XP and win2000 drivers. I need to know if there's a driver for my audio device. feel free to respond. Thanks.

- Good luck with HP. I have been trying to get the same drivers. Sound worked for a day and now nothing. HP even states they will not support Vista unless you use their upgrade DVD, despite what their website states. I spent 4 hours on the phone with Microsoft trying to resolve this and other issues and was advised of the many problems with HP computers and Windows Vista.

- Hello. I am running an HP pavilion dv1000 and I am curious if there is any update on this issue.
The loud error beeps on my laptop get quite annoying in class, so any help would be great. - Just use the XP drivers. If you used the Vista upgrade advisor, it said the drivers would work on Vista. What you should do is have the program extract itself (default location is C:\swsetup\sw30399) and use Device Manager to manually install the drivers from that folder.

I have the same problem.. and I'm using Windows 7 RC Evaluation Build 7100... My computer is HP Presario V2656US Edition
And the conexant-cx20468-31-ac97 Driver for XP didn't work..
Detailed Steps that I made:
- Opened device manager
- Right click - Update Driver Software
- MAnual Select location c:\swsetup\sp30399
- Clicked Next
- Message "No compatable Audio Drivers for this device" "Or something of the like"

BUT.......:).......I managed to solve the problem:
I have an old HP-Compaq nx9005 laptop, but it has the same audio chip this topic is about ( conexant-cx20468-31-ac97) .
So here's the solution (on Windows 7 RC):
1. Download driver sp30399! You can get it from here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-31530-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1816346&os=228&lang=en
2. Run the exe
3. Go to the extraction folder (Default: c:\SWSetup\SP30399)
4. Edit qta3091.inf:
Search code block:
[Conexant]
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_3091103C
and add this line under:
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_10B9&DEV_5451&SUBSYS_0024103C&REV_02
So the result would look like this:

You may have a different device description. If you wanna be sure, go to the device manager, open the unrecognized audio device's property page, select "Details" tab, and select "Hardware Ids" from the Property combo! Copy any of the listed strings and replace it with my device description!
So the final result would look like this (if you have different device desc.):

%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_3091103C

5. Now all you have to do is to install the driver manually through device manager (Driver tab -> Update Driver...)
I just tried this as a final try, but now there is sound on my old laptop in Win7 ;)

Thank you. - Hi, I have the same sound card but I have a 64 BIT processor and for that I have Windows 7 64 BIT Edition. With the above solution don´t work, in device manager show "Realtek AC'97 Audio" but with a exclamation and a error number 10 "Este dispositivo no puede iniciar. (Código 10)" in english: "This device can´t start. (Code 10)". Any idea??

Vampireks.- - I have also Windows 7 64bit and also tried everything without success but I finally figured out the solution myself. Basically it is just exactly what Mr Raven said but instead of doing it with the sp30399 driver you should do it with sp35558 which is the vista 64bit driver which can be downloaded here:

installing it regularly didn't work for me but i did something like what Mr Raven did.
1. first, try to install it normally with the driver. it will probably fail but it will be extracted in C:\swsetup\SP35558 by default
2. open the .inf file and locate
[Conexant.NTamd64]
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_308B103C

3. add this line to it

<x> can be found by going to the device manager, open the unrecognized audio device's property page, select "Details" tab, and select "Hardware Ids" from the Property combo. One of the listed strings should be <x>. it was the top one in my case.
In my case <x> was PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_3082103C&REV_03
so it eventually looked like:

4. now install the driver manually through device manager. In my case it installed as "Conexant AC-Link Audio" which i find weird since it first was listed as "Conexant Realtec AC-97". - Conexant CX20493-58 CG Modem Driver
- Conexant CX20468-31 AC97 CG Audio Driver & Driver EQ
Can you guy help me? Where Can I get it?

- Ivo87 - I have an HP ZV6131US (ZV6000 Series). I contacted HP and they told me that there was no driver available for my sound. I tried your solution for the 64 bit and I NOW HAVE SOUND!!! Thanks for the info!

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit installed on Compaq Presario V2000.
I have a the same problem to install the sound card driver.
I have tried Mr. Raven's method with sp30399 and it didn't work - "This device cannot start (Code 10)"
maybe there is a difference between the RC and the final edition?

Ori - Thanks to Ivo87. I have a zv6270us and am currently running Win 7 RC 64bit and his Vista 64 bit driver worked with the hack. Two more problems to work out if I can just find the rest of the drivers. PCI Modem and Mass Storage Controller. I will post back if I get them fixed.
- Tried all of that stuff above and then some too. Maybe I am super nooob at this. Did not work for me. Compaq presario 2404US, Win 7 gig o' ram. Thanks for the input though......Still no sound.... :(...Will go back to WinXP where sound does exist. Not a biggie, as I use this laptop for TV.
- I have also Windows 7 64bit on Gateway mx6429 with no sound [Conexant.NTamd64]
fooled around for 3 weeks with no luck until i found this post
thanks yooooooooou - one think that maybe worth mention is that when I went back to winXP I struggled a little bit with the sound card too.
at the end the think that got it work again was installing the modem driver - with was wired to begin with , but then I understood that the modem and the sound card are integrated in the compaq Presario V2000
maybe I have to go back to win7 and try this trick in combination with Mr. Raven's trick??

i was trying 2 do this in vista and didnt work but once a loaded up win 7 in my pavilion zv6000 it works fine i really apreciate it keep up....I have exactly this situation. I have a Compaq Presario Laptop running Windows 7 and everything works except the sound. I am trying to follow the above procedure and I have one question.
When I go to the device manager to look for the device ID, it shows me 4 separate ID's for the device. I'm guessing the device I'm trying to fix is called "Multimedia Audio Controller". When I look at the hardware ID's I see 4 separate entries.
My question is how do I know which one to use? Do I need to add all 4 entries in the manner described in the post or just the first one?
This is the list I see for the "Multimedia Audio Controller" device entry:
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_3091103C&REV_02
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_3091103C
