    I have a laptop which contains Windows Vista(OEM) installed.

    I have installed a dual mount on it with ubuntu(linux) on the other partition .

    I mostly use linux, for my work. But some time I have to use Vista.

    Switching OS is not so easy.

    I plan to use vista within a virtual box in my linux.

    Can I do that? if so, do I need upgraded licence?

    According to what I know, it is not possible to do that: an OEM License is strictly bound to the hardware it has been sold with and cannot be installed and activated on another system because that would be a license violation.

    I understood that though the vista (I planned to install), resides in the same hardware, virtualization creates a virtual hardware.

    So obviously the OEM licence will not be applicable.

    Yes, you're right: it is another PC, different from the one the Windows License is bound to.
    Furthermore, if you've installed and activated that Windows Vista in the past, that License would result as "in use".
