vista-windows wireless service can't start......

Saturday, June 23, 2007 5:36 PMHi I have 2 XP desktops and a Vista Home laptop all sharing internet through a lynksys wireless router for weeks. I've had no problems untill a couple days ago, the Vista laptop suddenly couldnt see the network let alone connect to it. The WIFI light is on. Ive tried the useless repair connection button but it says "windows wireless service is not running on this computer" so i click repair only to be told it cant fix the problem. Is ther a way to start the service? I cant find it in services.mcs or msconfig. I ran sfc /scannow and it said there were errors but they couldnt be fixed. Ive tried everything and called Dell tech support but they say it has to be an OS error and all i can do is backup and reinstall the whole OS but I would prefer not to. Any ideas? Please help!!!!!!

Stopped seeing my wireless coneection and i tried restarting the windows wireless service and would not start...had to reload vista from scratch....what a pain. I think this problem need to be addressed by Microsoft.

I have two machines running Vista both using a wirelss connection so im wondering now when the second machine is going to go down! Cant believe they release products with this type of problem with no solution.

Hi guys,
I have exactly the same problem. I have a laptop with home premium eidtion. Yesterday, due to a virus, I lost the connection. After cleaning the virus, I cannot get connected to my wirless router. In fact, the laptop was unable to find any wireless networks around. I know at least 5-6 wireless networks around including mine.
When I run diagnose for wireless connnection, it says: start windows wireless service, when I click it, it says: windows cannot resolve the problem, please contact service provider or network administrator.
After googling it, I run into this thread. Looks like there is no options other than reinstalling windows vista. This really sucks.
Thanks guys for the info posted.
P.S. where are the M$ guys around?

I got a rootkit virus and used avg rootkit to remove some files.
After rebooting, the wireless service (vista native wifi) could not start.
I tried to re install all my network drivers without success.
after changed that value, wireless is working

The problem for me started when one of my ram Dimms blew. The machine wouldn't boot. I managed to remove the broken memory and found that my belkin usb network adapter was also no longer working. I tried this in another machine and it didnt work there either.
I have just bought a new adapter it powers and installs. Still no joy connecting. finding this thread I have changed from 3 to 2 this also doesn't work in my case. I don't think I have a virus but have not software to check.
Any word from anybody at MS about this problem? -

Wednesday, December 05, 2007 12:29 PM i also had this problem and i found a solution to it that works for me at least
here is what i did:
i first tried the registry the value was 3 and i changed it to 2 without any success so i started digging more
i looked up the services module (startbutton, then type services) to see what services i had running and what not, and i found one that looked relevant called: 'WLAN AutoConfig' i opened this up and went to the tab called dependencies, there you have a list of other services (gearshaped icons) that you need to have running in order for thos one to run, so i went thru them one by one and changed them to automatic then started them up, som of them in turn needed others to be started so i did that also and finally i could turn WLAN AutoConfig on and after that i was smooth sailing.
i uninstalled the cards software in system settings, and i reinstalled the drivers and its working great now

Saturday, January 12, 2008 1:03 AMWow It Did work. I set the registry to 2. It seemed to be from when I uninstalled AGV FREE antivirus from the client’s computer that set this setting to 4. I had to reboot 2wice for it to take effect. After the first reboot I noticed The connection obtaining IP address. Then lost connection I rebooted again and all was perfect.

Hi again,
As you all had the same problem, I had it too. I got a nasty virus/spyware and my anti-virus didn't got it.
After removing the virus/spyware, and when I wasn't able to use my wireless internet connection became really really frustrating including the fact that no internet resource was available on this issue.
After investigating a little, I tried to restore my windows services to the original state. After typing 'windows vista default services' in Google I found a script that supposed to do what I was needed. That site contained also a description for each windows service, so this way I found out about the wireless service that was shut-down, and that couldn't be started because of a missing dependency (that couldn't be started using the windows software (I forgot the name for it
.So looking at the script (the one for defaulting the state of windows services), and finding the name for that dependency that was stopped by that mallware, I did it a try and it worked.
So, funny thing, I'm not a windows fan ("Long live UNIX"), my expertise with windows is fairy limited, and with a little luck I figured out.
Why I was so stubborn? I had to chat with my girlfriend
Funny thing though is that some one stoled my laptop 1 mo later and I lost my girlfriend too

I have the exact same problem!!! i have a compaq presario c710el and a linksys wireless-g router, i have a desktop pc connected to it via cable and it works fine ( this is how i got to this forum). The problem started when i was downloading a patch for a software. I exctracted the files and ran the patch setup. ( ithink it was a virus, I cant believe i was so stupid), the computer crashed and then restarted. thats when i started having the problem. i restarted my laptop again and i noticed that windows defender wasnt starting up like it usually does ( idont know if the same thing happened to u) and when i tried starting the application it would give me the error code : 0x800106ba. wich i looked up on the internet with the desktop pc and found a way to fix the problem. it wanted me to reinstall defender by downloading it, but since i dont have access to internet on the laptop i opted for the regsvr32 option. anyway, u shouldnt have to reinstall the OS. when u got the laptop u shouldve made a backup disc. use that to fix the pc. It should fix the corrupted .dll files without having to reinstall thus losing all ur files. if u didnt make the cd when u got the pc, u should still be able to make by typing recovery disc creation in the start bar. U can also start the recovery without the disc, directly from the pc. I will keep looking for a solution and when i find it i will post it here

The reg edit solution worked for me to, however i had 4 and changed to 2 ( like all those for whom this trick worked) those who say it didint work had it to 3, so either the changed the wrong one or they should try changing it to 4, rebooting the pc, tthen changing it back to 2 and rebooting the pc.

Actually I had similar problem (still have?)
It started when my Vista crashed and restarted, but in my case not only wireless stopped working, but IE was not reposnding when I tried to use it. It was ok in the no add-ons mode.
Thx for the article - it helped me to get wireless back (I had 4 as a value), but I noticed something different.
After restoring IE to it's default state I tried to install Google Toolbar and every time I try to do it the value in the registry change to 4 again. I've just checked before restarting Windows and loosing wireless - it was set up 4 again.
Does anybody else noticed any dependency?

How do we get Microsoft's attention on this one?
Now I have to keep in mind and update the vaue from 4 to 2 before I shut down my computer each time, otherwise I will need to boot my computer twice to get my wireless. Is there a script I can use to do this update for me automatically?
One interesting thing is that, the link in the alert mail to my Live! Hotmail never worked, when I pressed the link, it always says the topic was merged to another one and asked me to go to the announcement... so weird (IE7 used)
then, when I try to search the content of the forum, this one was never displayed.
So, for me to come back here again, I had to go to google and by using the same seach keywords "vista-windows wireless service can't start", this post appears at the top of the result....
Man, if Microsoft can't even handle a search for their home properly (its own browser, own web mail service plus on its own forum....), and Google could get into it so much better, how is it going to play the game with it.....
anyways, hopefully Microsoft will at least fix this problem within our Vista.......

Just one comment - the reason for the problem we're talking about on my computer was a virus - W32/Bagle
It started with OS crash and blue screen and now - after many hours of scanning and when it seems I got rid of that *** I restarted my computer twice and it looks like the value is still 2 and doesn't change.

Wednesday, February 06, 2008 11:46 PMI had a bit of a surprise when I found that after uninstalling Network Magic I had neglected to turn off their protection feature. What the feature actually does is turn on MAC filtering on the wireless router. After 2 system restores and a couple of pulled hairs, I figured out the issue and was able to allow myself back onto my own system by turning off MAC filtering on the router. To do so, you will have to access the router using another wireless computer on the network that still has access or connect the router directly to your computer through a dreaded wire. Once, I turned off the MAC filtering I was back in business in less than 5 seconds. If, for security reasons, you wish to turn filtering back on, you can do so now that you are connected and the router recognizes your MAC address once again.

I have tried to scan my PC for hours and anti-virus did me no good.
I have seen people having "W32/Bagle" in the thread, then I have tried Spy Sweep from www.webroot.com
I have found the same thing in my PC "Worm - Bagle"
You can try the spy sweep for free but you need to delete the affected files manually. I think webroot is quite good, have a try will do you no harm. Get rid of it or pay for it afterwards, up to you.

To confirm a suspected source of this error, I also was hit by the W32/Beagle virus, GM variant. If others find their way here with the same problem, it can be cleaned up quite quickly by deleting certain files (google it) in system32\drivers using safe mode or a rescue disk, and ComboFix.exe can also help (though doesn't always fix it completely). This virus was really nasty - a harsh reminder to keep the definitions up to date!

Monday, February 25, 2008 9:37 PM Been dealing with this issue on a customer's new Vista Home Premium laptop today... All of a sudden it stopped finding wireless connections.
Trying to start the WLAN auto config always got me an error, so I started checking the "dependancy" services for WLAN Auto Config. And the dependancies of those dependancies...
Bottom line, I found a service that had a corrupt .dll associated.
The service was named: KeyISO
Every time I'd try to view the KeyISO properties, it would give me a "not functioning Error 2". Not able to find anything about it in MS KB, I started some tried and true possibilities, not knowing if any of them would work, but giving them a try anyway.
Long story short, I ended up running the old SFC /SCANNOW from a command prompt elevated as Administrator.
Click the blue pearl, then click the search box.
Type 'CMD', then hold down Ctrl-Shift and press the Enter key. This should open a command prompt elevated to Administrative level. (click continue at the prompt).
Type 'sfc /scannow' (obviously without the quotes, and press enter. Let it do it's thing and scan your system. When it's done, restart the computer.
That's all it took for me, and my wireless started showing up again. I'm documenting this one... cause it looks like the issue is pretty prevalent.- Proposed As Answer by Sony151282 Friday, January 22, 2010 9:42 AM

^^, it works for me too. A few days ago just got a virus or something that makes the BSOD come out and my wireless died. The NDIS start=2 really fixed the problem. However, I did try to reinstall the Intel Wireless driver before applying this modification. Dunno whether this combination helped to fix the issue.

I am having the same issue........I had intermittent wireless problems. After I installed SP1 about 5 days later the wireless card stopped working. It says device cannot start (code 10). I rolled back windows vista back to factory default settings and the wireless will not work. Under device driver it has a yellow triangle. How do I change the above information to get the wireless to work again?
For the mean time I have another network wireless card that I am using and the same intermittent issue is going on, but works. The factory internal card will not work at all.

Wired AutoConfig
Which depends on: Extensible Authentication Protocol
And also WLAN
so in all started 3 services back and it was all good.

Hey all,
For all of you that this did not fix, i may have a solution...
if you start the service called "WLAN AutoConfig" and receive "error 3", have a look in your C:\windows folder for a folder called "l2schemas"
If you do not have the folder / files in this location i.e. C:\windows\l2schemas\Lan_policy_v1.xsd, Lan_profile_v1.xsd, WLAN_Policy_v1.xsd etc. then you may have an issue...
to resolve (without a re-install of Vista), grab a copy from another working computer (running vista) and place in C:\%windir%\l2Schemas
hope this helps others out there........ took me 3 hours to sort this one

Well, we finally figured out that there was a problem with the network card, at least. Basically the computer was damaged. We took it back and got a different one. This one is working. So, for everyone that has a new comp that does't start the wireless service: EXCHANGE IT!

I tried everything short of re-installing Vista to resolve this issue. Thanks, Kurt, for your suggestion. When I viewed the WLAN_Policy_v1.xsd file, it was a mixture of XML and garbage. After changing the file ownership to Administrators, I was able to replace that file with a copy from another Vista installation. Now wireless services once again work fine!

Saturday, August 02, 2008 10:10 PMI had the same problem & nothing worked. Running Vista SP1. I disabled some services days earlier and realized this was the cause. Make sure that the following services are started & automatic (including dependencies): WLAN Autoconfig, Extensible Authentication Protocol, RPC & CNG Key Isolation (the last will cause the unable to start Window Wireless Service (WLAN)). I hope this can save you all the headaches I had with this issue. [The registry start value on my machine was 3 - still works]. Goodluck.

Then too "all programs"
then too "accessories"
then right click on "command prompt"
hit "run as adimistrator"
when the command prompt screen comes up
type this without the quotation marks "sfc /scannow"
let it do its stuff
then reboot and see if it works. -

This problem began for me when I received a message that I needed to run chkdsk. After chkdsk ran I got a message that there were some corrupt files that could not be fixed.
Googling brought me to this board. I tried all of the suggestions on this board - no luck. I deleted and reinstalled SP1. Still no luck. Again I ran scannow and this time found a way to read the CBS log:

From this log I could see that the corrupted file was:
c:/windows/sys32/drivers/ndisuio.sys
When I looked at this file in the folder the size was 0.
After making the sys32 folder and the drivers folder shared, I right clicked to properties of the ndisuio.sys file. Clicking the Previous Versions tab gave me the option to copy a shadow copy -17KB. I copied it, rebooted, problem fixed!
Only silver lining of this exercise was that I freed up about 15GB of disc space by deleting some Vista updates that predated SP1.

It worked just in about as much time as it took to read it.The moral of this story is that people shouldn't just willy-nilly accept defaults in Vista Manager to speed up the system, and that there are self-taught geniuses around to rescue the rest of us from our mistakes. I had an automatic update on my Vista Business laptop last night, and got to work this morning, and it was taking close to five minutes to boot, and when it finally got up, no wireless. I tried the registry change, but my 'start' setting was at 3, and switching it to 2 did not help. I ran the SFC /scannow as admin, and that did not help. The instant I saw a mention to Kaspersky in this post, I knew that had something to do with my problem. I was able to repair my wireless services by replacing the L2Schemas folder. I had trouble deleting the folder even though I was logged in as the Admin so I renamed the old folder instead. Then I pasted the L2Schemas folder with the files from another computer with Vista and it works!
I'm so happy and thankful to have this problem resolved.
I've tried the other procedures (change to 2, etc.) and they didnt work for me but copying the folder worked so I highly recommend this solution if you are having trouble with your windows wireless service (wlan autoconfig).

To start Wireless Zero Configuration in Windows Vista you need to log in as an Administrator.
- Click on Start and Control Panel
- Select Administrative Tools and then Services
- In the Services box scroll down the list of Services (Local) until you find the one labelled Wired AutoConfig and double click it.
- In the Wired AutoConfig Properties (Local Computer) box change the Startup type to Automatic
- Click on Start and once the service has started click on OK
- Now find the service labelled WLAN AutoConfig and double click it.
- In the WLAN AutoConfig Properties (Local Computer) box change the Startup type to Automatic
- Click on Start and once the service has started click on OK
- Go to File and Exit to close the Services window

I have a Netgear USB Wireless Adapter that has a driver not recognized properly by Vista.
Here's how I fixed it on my computer:
Click "Start" button.
Right Click on "Computer"
When the little menu pops up, select "Manage"
When "User Account Control" pops up, click on "Continue"
Computer Management window:
Expand "Services and Applications"
Click on "Services"
Scroll down the list of services til you get to "WLAN Autoconfig"
Double-click on "WLAN Autoconfig"
WLAN Autoconfig window:
"General" tab
Half way down, "Startup type" should be set to "Automatic"
"Recovery" tab
I set "First Failure" and "Second Failure" to "Restart the Service" (seemed to make sense)
Clicked "Apply" and "OK" at bottom
Restart computer.
Give the service time to start up. It's not immediate.
Hope this works for you!

I have done the regedit thing (change start from 3>2) and the sfc /scannow which stops at verification 26% complete and says "Windows Resource Pretection could not perform the requested operation." I have also done the WLAN AutoConfig thing making sure all of its dependencies are on automatic and started. Then when i attempt to start WLAN AutoConfig (its on automatic too) it starts and then this error pops up
Windows could not start the WLAN AutoConfig service on Local Computer.
Error 1392: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i have wasted countless hours researching this. Thanks.

I just found this page and see the sfc /scannow Did that, checked my cbs.log, found a file named wlansec.dll was missing and one in store corrupt.
I found a site where u can download .dll files and downloaded it. Put it into my sys32 folder and rebooted.

Also, I was reading these answers and posts here and I noticed that most people experienced the problem after installing/uninstalling some antispyware software. And yes it was the same thing for me, I had the problem after I restarted my system after uninstalling Webroot Spysweeper. Installing it back didn't help.
ALSO, worth mentioning, I am running Windows 7 Beta.

Ok so I worked out the REGEDIT thingy ... changed from 3 to 2 and restarted... didn't work
Changed back to 3 and restarted .... didn't work
Changed to 4 and restarted.... didn't work
Changed back to 2 and restarted twice.... didn't work
Changed back to 3...
Have tried the SFC /Scannow.... didn't come up with anything went through to 100% ... didn't work
THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY ...I dont want to have to pay to get my computer fixed ... and I dont have the disk for windows ... I am continuing to try other avenues but it is a very short time until I become extremely violent with my laptop and it dies a horrible death

I had that problem, what I did was:......
It's really simple,
1. Click Start
2. Search "System Restore" (Without the inverted Commas)
3. Select a date possibly from before the problem first occurred. and restore.
This worked for me after having tried all these solutions unsuccessfully. -

10 days and 23 hours since my problem started. My thanks to Hersey for bringing this solution to the forum and to Heartsease for putting in the "Business" word after Vista that caught my eye to this solution. I have read through all the supports posted on the hp online help forum and i have tried almost all the process but non have worked except the one that i have to do the following;
1. regedit
2. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ndisuio
3. Change Start to "0x000000002 (2)"
4. Restart
But its quite unfortunate that I don't know where to access the regedit. Please kindly send we the directives of where to access it.

However, my computer is new and I couldnt find any networks automatically but could still get on when hitting repair. Just try the config thing. Goodluck!

If when you get there you have a 3 instead of a four this may not work for you. It didnt for me. I used the wlan cofig advice and that was my problem. Everying was set to manual start instead of automatic.

For the guy who doesn't know how to open regedit you go to "start" then "run" then you write "regedit" the you do the rest. Now i recomend to look around because Killall5 says to change the start of ndis but that start it's in 0, then the start of ndistapi is in 3 and the ndisuio is in 4, i tryed everything and it didn't work untill y change the ndisuio's start from 4 to 2 !!!!!

I restored the system to a time before that installation and my Windows wireless service started to work Fine. This can be done by going to All Programmes, Accessories, System Tools and System Restore. Select a time before you installed any networking software and resotre the system to that point. Genius! I tried resetting permission on windows directory, the regedit 3>2 and sfc /scannow and this solution finally solved my problem!

I am having a DELL Studio 1555 model laptop, where my Wireless is not working.
As usual Called the Dell, and they informed that Due to Some Virus the services are currupted. I am usign the AVG Antivirus.
Tried to re Install teh wirelss drivers, nothing worked.
I tried you answer it still had no Effect.

Ive been monitoring this thread for a while now in the hopes I could fix mine but to now avail. I have however located the problem.
Firstly I have tried:
- Changing the registry keys (Start from 3 > 2, 2 > 4) and so on. Didnt fix it but my mate had the same problem and this sorted his straight out.
- Going through the services and finding the WLAN Config. This is where the problem threw up an error as everyone else. Although I went through all the dependencies and they were all set to automatic and I started them all. Still wouldn't start the WLAN. This threw up the "Error 1068" message
- So based on that I knew some files were corrupt, ran the Scannow hoping it would fix them but it did have a problem with a few
- The two files which seem to be effected are the ndisuio.sys file which most people are having problems with and also httpapi.dll.mui
Any advice would be great as im seriously losing patience with this problem

Monday, December 07, 2009 3:20 AMMy internal wireless devise on HP laptop shows the orange light rather then blue. If I connect a LAN wire to the router, I could connect to internet, but not via wireless device.
Tried ensuring services WLAN Auto config and its dependencies are all automatic and are started. Then Rebooted. Did not work even though everything was up and running after reboot.
ran the sfc /verifyonly to scan the integrity of the protected system files. I did not run with /scannow option which also repairs. Wanted to see if there are any issues first. Took little while but found no issues.
Then changed the registry setting from 3 > 4 > restart > 2 > restart. Did not work. I believe 2 means automatic and 3 is manual.
ran the netsh int ip reset > c:\resetlog.txt and did a Shutdown/reboot. Voila ... My internal wireless device light turned blue and it detected the network and I am connected. I did not need to do a winsock reset.

So I happened to come across this forum about a week ago when my internet functions went out. My WLAN screen did not allow me the option to connect to networks which I knew I was in range of. I followed all of the answers below and it seemed nothing would work but an OS which was NOT an option. I tried changing the values/dependancies, (Mine was set at 3 to begin with) I tried the /Scannow; I TRIED EVERYTHING! But FINALLY...After one hanus, long, tear-filled week, I found my answer.
Start Button
In Search Box type: "cmd winsock reset"
Hold Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
Let it do its thing.
Restart computer.
I was completely surprised when this worked. I tried over 20 times with different suggestions and restarting my Laptop and nothing helped...But here I am now! Wrting this from the very Laptop I had the issue with in the first place.
Google really can fix anything, can't it? :]
I hope this works for those of you who have tried everything else. Thanks to all the Tecch-ies who have also gathered their answers and input here. I'm glad I didn't shell out that $200 to get my laptop fixed by some dude with stinky B-O who was gonna google his questions like I did. :D

THANKS A TRILLION TON!!....you are the life-saver out here...i had been following this thread and tried several things(like changing the value to 2 in the regedit...but it worked for only those who had their previous value as '4'....but i had 3 and even after changing to 2, it didnt work...and alas!!...saw ur solution and worked 100% fine!!
i would recommend what computerguy366 has said above, to all those who had 3 in their regedit START value and wireless did not work even after changing to 2....just run the sfc/scannow as mentioned above and all will work fine...at the end of the scan, it might even say COULD NOT REPAIR SOME FILES...but still exit the CMD and restart your machine...all will be fine....

Dudes: Start> right click on Computer> Manage> Services and Applications> Services> scroll down to the bottom to WLAN AutoConfig> double click> under the General tab choose automatic start.
Done deal.

Hey guys,
after finally trying everything on this page and almost giving up hope. All the drivers were working fine and I checked all the services but the wireless service just woudn't work.
I finaly came across this solution on http://forums.techguy.org/networking/630190-solved-windows-wireless-service-cant.html
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.
Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reboot the machine.It worked for me perfectly and solved some of my other problems as well

I was able to repair my wireless services by replacing the L2Schemas folder. I had trouble deleting the folder even though I was logged in as the Admin so I renamed the old folder instead. Then I pasted the L2Schemas folder with the files from another computer with Vista and it works!
I'm so happy and thankful to have this problem resolved.
I've tried the other procedures (change to 2, etc.) and they didnt work for me but copying the folder worked so I highly recommend this solution if you are having trouble with your windows wireless service (wlan autoconfig).

I had to rename L2Schemas using the Command prompt as the operation was hanging in Windows Explorer
Start > Type in "command Prompt" and Run as administrator
cd Windows
rename L2Schemas crapfolder
and then copy over an entire working L2Schemas from another computer using Windows explorer
(you could take this from my site http://www.lepki.com/L2Schemas.rar if you're short)
Unpack, copy, Reboot and Bob's your uncle

Replacing the L2Schemas folder with a copy from another vista machine worked like a charm. You guys are a true blessing!!!

OK, so here's my problem.
When I try to start WLAN autoconfig, I get the error 1068: dependencies group failed to load.
So I checked further and the EAP (Error 1068) CNG Key Isolation (Error 3: system path cannot be specified) can't start. The other dependencies are on and automatic. I tried the regedit, and the sfc/scannow AND I thought I tried the winsock reset but I have no idea if I did it correctly. Still nothing.
Any ideas?

Yeah, I was one of the guys who had a 3 instead of 4. That option didn't work for me.
For me it actually goes a lot deeper. I have a lot of windows programs that ceased to work after I cleaned up the virus, not just windows wireless. That's just the biggest priority fix for me right now.
I'm also searching for some sort of restore of the default services, I'm hoping this exists and works, but at this point...yeah, who's to say?

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 7:31 PMGo back through the posts and look for the guy who mentions looking at what services are running on your computer. Look for the WLAN and make sure it is enabled. I had the exact same problem as everyone else. I tried the regedit trick but my value was set to 3 so changing it to 2 did nothing. I checked the services and sure enough, WLAN was in disabled mode. Changed it to automatic and all is good now! Good Luck all!

I discovered the issue to my problem. I couldn't start WLAN because one of the dependencies, the CNG Key Isolation wouldn't start. I googled and found this link, http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistanetworking/thread/6449ec62-f55c-4122-9881-af6321ab67eb , and it helped me solve the problem.
The service wouldn't start because the system path couldn't be found (error 3)
So, The "ImagePath" had been removed/erased/deleted from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\KeyIso.
The following steps got the wireless back up:
1) Added a new "Expandable String Value" Where Name = "ImagePath" & Data = "%SystemRoot%\system32\lsass.exe.
2) Started "CNG Key Isolation" service
3) Started "WLAN Auto Config" serviceThis worked for me. Worth a shot if any of you still can't start your WLAN

I have been trying everything on this page for the last 6 hours......
the scannow solution showed that the files in the L2Schemas folder were the issue and I did not have a backup copy to use.
So thank you for this solution, replaced the files, rebooted and "voila" Wireless is back online....

Fortuately I hade another VISTA SP1 laptop to get settigs from. Services then started OK.

Thank you all who have provided all sorts of solutions here. I really appreciated, especially the time you all have invested in. I tried all the solutions above, and there's just a few solutions that worked for me. For those who have this error message:
"windows couldn't start wlan autoconfig on local computer.."
when starting the wlan autoconfig from service snap-in console, the solution is:
replace the files in windows\L2Schemas\. with the files from another computer with wireless functioning well.
You may check first with sfc/scannow command to see which files are corrupted. Then if it's not working, you may also need to change the ndisuio registry start value to 2.

May be this should work for those who has start value 3 and tried everything mentioned in this forum.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt (Right-Click and Run as Administrator)
At the command Prompt type : netsh winsock reset
It worked for me. I tried all the stuff mentioned in this forum before resetting winsock but no sucess.
I am using Windows Vista Home edition.

I tried all of the above....going from 3 to 2 helped to make the computer restart better but didnt solve the problem I was having with Wired Config and WLan Config. The Winsock reset got the system running and internet working. It still has issues but this got it running. Thank you very much....

I FIXED IT!!!!!
I had the same issues... I changed it to 2 also- didn't work....
but-
go to control panel
services
the wlan autoconfig says it will not start due to dependencies not running
check and make sure the Dcom server process launcher is started and set to auto start
check and make sure CNG Key Isolation is started and set to auto start
(the dcom and CNG will depend on the other one to start first, but i cannot remember wich one i started first, but it will tell you it wont start cause of a dependencies.. choose the other then)
after the Dcom and CNG is started go back to wlan autoconfig and restart it.. this worked to correct my issues I was having.. (also make sure wlan is set to auto start)

Give this a try - Look for Net Driver HPZ12 service and start it. Then, go after the WLAN AutoConfig service.

So had same problem - couldn't start wireless connection [windows wireless service wouldnt start]
So changed Redit value from 3 to 2 - Restarted - [didn't work]
Ran SFC /scannow - went 100% - [didn't work]
Restarted
Physically 'turned on' my wireless - via wireless button on laptop. [for me, Alt-F3]
and it turned on and now works perfectly.....
BTW [throughout whole process i kept trying the physical button, only worked after i did the process above]

the http://www.inf.aber.ac.uk/advisory/faq/965/#vista solution worked brilliantly. Found that this problem occurred after I 'renamed' by computer. Part of my solution was adopting the original name again. There were a number of the group processes running under the administrator account rather than 'Local'. by setting all the Local, I was able to set WLAN service to automatic and 'start' it.

Thankyou Tech Trainer and fairlytall - I tried changing the registry as suggested ('Start' from 3 to 2) but this did not work for me. I then used scf /scannow as suggested by computerguy366. This found an error but did not fix the problem. I then replaced the folder L2schemas in the Windows Folder. (Fortunately I had another Vista computer to get it from).This worked perfectly. The renamed old L2schemas folder disappeared on rebooting.I am so pleased as I thought I might have an expensive repair of replacing the internal wireless card or antenna cable, even though device manager showed no errors.I am now checking for virus and trojan infection.Thanks again guys!

Hi all,
I understand this is an old thread but I am posting, hoping that someone will respond to me :)
I own a gateway laptop.
I had the same problem with my computer not being able to find wireless network connections.
When I opened regedit the start value was at 4.
Every time I change it to 2 and restart my computer, it resets back to 4.
I'm a 100% sure that Killall5's solution will fix my internet problem.
Please advise how I can get regedit to save my settings once I restart my computer.

It didnt fix mine but for anyone it doesnt this did:
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EapHost right click "depend on service" and delete all entries. Under the same HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Dhcp right click "depend on service" and remove all entries. I saved changes rebooted and viola ..working again
of course back up registry or create a restore point before doing this...although I had no problem

I just wanted to bump Hersey's response as the one that worked for me.
Background: Vista Home Premium on laptop. Also running AVG Free for virus protection. I downloaded a program called MHotspot, and when it was installing, my virus program went ballistic, saying it had prevented malware and that I needed to reboot immediately.
I noticed that my network had gone down. Upon rebooting I had the similar error messages others reported about the Windows wireless service not starting, and the Network and Sharing Center said the needed services would not start.
I managed to get back online by putting my SIM card into my Galaxy Tab and using that to browse. (I use a USB stick in my laptop for internet.)
I tried several things included the registry edits described here with changing 4 to 2, as well as making changeds to the DHCP service including just deleting all of its dependency information (not the services themselves but the information in the DHCP registry entry). I still got the same errors.
But doing Hersey's tip is what made it come back. So this is to let everyone know that this will work even if you are not using Kaspersky or another anti-virus program. Well, at least it worked in my situation. Thanks Hersey!

My settings were 3, so I just went into services and dependencies and turned stuff on.
But my computer will still not boot the windows 7 upgrade disc.
