Hi. I am unable to put my computer in standby because of the print spooler. How can I fix this?

In retail versions of Windows Vista systems, Standby mode is not available. Sleep Mode is the replacer. If your purpose is let the computer enter Sleep Mode after the system idles for minutes or you click Start->the button with an arrow beside the button “Lock this computer”, perform the following steps to reset print spooler to see if the problem can be resolved.

1. Click Start, click Run, type "Services.msc" (without the quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.
2. Double-click "Printer Spooler" in the Services list. Click Stop and click OK.
3. Click Start, click Run, type "%WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers" in the open window, and delete all files in this folder.
4. Click Start, click Run, type "Services.msc" (without the quotation marks) in the open box.
5. Double-click "Printer Spooler" in the Services list. Click Start and click OK.

If the issue persists, the installed printer driver may be compatible. Temporary remove the existed driver.

1. Click the "Start" button, type PRINTER in the search box and press Enter.
2. Find the icons which are related to your printer, and delete them.
3. Right-click on the blank part of the window, and choose "Run as administrator"->"Server Properties".
4. On the Drivers tab, select the listed printer and click the Remove button. Please then select Remove driver and driver package.
5. Open Start menu, input APPWIZ.CPL in the Search box and press ENTER to launch "Programs and Features".
6. Try to remove all related printer software.

Test if the issue persists.

Then access the printer manufacture website to download the latest Windows Vista compatible driver.

If the issue does not occur after you remove the driver, the issue is caused by the old driver. Installing the latest driver would resolve the issue. However, if the issue persists, you may open Event Log, check the sleep event whose source is “Kernel-Power”, and the event after that. From the log we could find the root cause.

However, if you would like to let the computer enter Standby Mode but not Sleep Mode, you have to contact the computer manufacture to resolve this issue. Because in your Windows Vista the Standby function is not designed by Microsoft, but the computer manufacture.
