1 - Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

    2 - Reset Windows Internet Explorer 7

3 - If still no joy, download and run AU Check (v78) by Eddie Bowers (Security Support - Microsoft Corporation)

I tried all three of these steps and still no joy. Thanks for trying though, nobody else seems to know anything at all about this error code.

I have been getting thissame erro code, and I ran the Norton Removal Tool, reset IE  but when I go to yor third link or AU Check (v78) I cannot find this applicaton on that web page.  I have already opened a ticket wih Microsoft and have gone through every possible step you can think of so they decided to get the "Vista speciaist's" involved.  Nothing is working and I am so fed up with Vista.  Do you have another link to this AU Check because again, I search for it on that web site and it comes back with no results?!  Thanks.

error code 80240038 seems to have no solution on the microsoft website.  the few answers provided by microsoft have come full circle back to where they started.  how can this error be fixed easily?

I have just had the same problem after using a vista recovery-cd for a computer. I solved my problem :
Run windows update - Disable automatic updates - Close window - Run securitycenter - set to automatic update - Run windows update again.
