Answered security center can't be started

I turned on my computer, and the security center can't be started (usually it starts automatically). That’s all the info I get. I tried turning it on manually, and same message keeps popping up without any other explanation. It also doesn’t show any other lines (windows update, firewall, defender, internet options)

How do I fix this problem?

    Thanks

    Harin

    Hi,

Before moving on, please confirm whether the Security Center service is running.

    Check Security Center service

    =============

    1. Click Start, type Services.msc in Start Search bar, and then press Enter.

    2. In the right pane, double-click Security Center.

    3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, click Apply, click Start, and then click OK.

    4. Restart the computer.

If the Security Center service cannot be started, please let me know the error message.

Then, let’s confirm the following points:

    1. Do you have a file named wscui.cpl in Windows\system32 folder? If it exists, double click it to run Security Center. If the file is missing, please copy it from another known computer.

    2. Do you scan virus and malware on the computer? They could damage your system components.

    Hope it helps.

I have the same problem and I did what you said. It seemed to work at first when i turned it automatic but when i pressed ok and looked at the list again it still said it was disabled and the dreaded red icon with th x was still there. I still cant open the security center and Im trying to open it because I hope it will help me with a string of other problems ive encountered recently with my computer. Such as random pop ups out of Internet explorer and when im searching in google or another search engine im lead to an entierly different site either advertising or showing obscene pictures and videos. Help! Please! T_T

Run a full virus scan with the security program you installed.

If you want use this Malewarebytes anti-malware program. It is very good.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/  ..... pick the " Download free version "

Open Matwarebytes > Update tab > get updates >
Scanner tab > select Perform full scan option > Start >
Will take some time. Wait. >
When done, a message box will appear > OK to close message box > Maleware removal will continue >
Back in Scanner window > select Show Results button > Click “ Remove Selected “ button
It may ask for computer to reboot in order to remove some of the viruses, if so, allow it.
After reboot, log in and continue with the rest of the steps.
When removal done, a scan log will be displayed in Notepad.
Exit the program when you are done.

If it solves your problem, I did it. If it does not, my twin brother did it.

Man you are a lifesaver! I downloaded the zip file, extracted the reg file from it and clicked on it and now my windows security center is up and running. There is however one minor twist, the white flag which sits at the bottom of the desktop in the taskbar next to the clock, it's not showing up. I rebooted still nothing. The service is set to run automatically.

    Any ideas.

Thanks so much for the most part

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
I found the reason why the white flag won't show up, the action to turn the flag on or off is greyed out as illustrated in the picture. Now I just have to figure out how to fix this..... Any ideas, Thanks in advance.

    @Tehbig2na

Check on your system clock and set it to proper date & time.  Yours is not current.

Be aware that Hijackthis is used less & less these days (other tools being more up-todate), but more important, you cannot "share" info from someone else's log.

"Torrents" filesharing/downloading from unknown sources is one of the leading causes of transmission of malware.

hi my i need help i got the same security center problem this is my error:1084

    @abdulrhman,
This is a Vista forum. However, please be very clear and state your specific version of Windows and tell us "how" and when you get this error code.

Also, tell us what anti-virus program you have & if you have done a scan of system with it. It is quite likely your system has a malware infection that could well have affected the security center service. So it is imperative that you thoroughly check your system for viruses & malware.

If you have not done so, start your antivirus, do an update run, and then full scan of system.

Also, follow up by getting & using the MS Safety Scanner

Turn off your antivirus temporarily. Get, save, then run the Safety Scanner

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

When done, turn back on your antivirus.

    Recheck Security Center.

If still no success, I'd recommend you get Help at malware removal forums:  Read the topmost directions at one of the following forum and Post your logs (as required by the forum)  to one (and only one) of the following

    Hello angie3207,

Be advised that with the firewall off and the inability to easily turn it on .....this is an earmark of a malware infection.

    What is your antivirus?

Is it up-to-date and did you do a full system scan with it?   Please do that right away.

It looks as if you have a missing Windows service (one or more). Which may be a clue & warning that you may have a malware infection and if so, that has to be hunted and corrected before you even try any Windows Update.

Go to Start >> select Control Panel >> and go to Action Center or Security Center (as appropos)

What does it show for antivirus status?
What does it show for Firewall status ?
What does it show for Automatic Updates?

Did you or any other user of the system "disable any Windows services" ?

When was the last time you scanned your system with your antivirus program and security app (if you have another anti-malware) ?

Often enough, a failed Windows update is really an end-result from a malware infection.

NEXT:  Check for missing or disabled Windows services, by doing the following, and post detailed results when done !!

From Start button, select RUN  (or Win-key +R) and in the run-text-box type in MSCONFIG and press OK or Enter.
On Vista or Windows 7, press Windows-key on keybooard, and type in MSCONFIG

You should see the General tab. Click the General tab.  It should have Normal startup selected (in the radio-box=selection)
IF it does not, then you click on Normal startup.

Click on Services tab.  To get it's display of services.

Keep a written list of any changes from my list of services below. That way you and I have a reference document.

Look at the bottom line Hide all Microsoft services
IF and only IF its is checkmarked, then un-check it.

the list of servies may be shown in non-alphabetical order, so ....
Look at the heading titled "Service". Click on it as needed so the list is sorted and top of list starts with the "A" services.
You can toggle as needed to get the desired order.

IF any of below services are NOT shown, don't panic & do not stop, just write down the info for me and proceed with the others !

Then using the scroll-bar scroll down the list

Look for COM+ Event System.  Is it shown?  Is it checked?  If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for COM+ System Application.  Is it shown?  Is it checked?  If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for Ipsec Policy Agent.  Is it shown?  Is it checked?  If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for RPC Endpoint Mapper.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for Windows Firewall.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for Windows Management Instrumentation.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for Windows Installer.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for Windows Update.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

When done, press the Apply button, and the OK button.

You're likely to be prompted to Restart Windows, do so.

If not prompted, you do a Logoff and Restart of Windows.

Then report back here with details.

If any of the services are not shown, just let me know which.

I have a problem the same or similar to those above. I accidently downloaded the fraud.fedexword virus and have run several virus removal programs and am confident that the virus is no longer my problem. However, the virus did leave damage to my programs. I have managed to get Microsoft Security Essentials back up and running but I now have both RPC Endpoint Mapper and Windows Firewall missing from the list under Services. Service Center is also not listed. All other servies are properly checked.

Additionally, when I try to run the Service Center it says "The Service Center service cannot be started". I also seem to remember coming across something that said that that service was not installed.  I'm guessing the virus either removed it or corrupted the registry for it. I am running Vista with all updates installed. I tried running wscui.cpl from Windows\sytem32 but same result. Of course there are no red or grey flags telling me that the Service Center isn't running or that my firewall in not working since apparently this feature is not installed.

While I am somewhat well versed with computers this one is a little out of my knowledge base. I could use your help. Any suggestions?
