    Hello,

After researching the subject on the Internet, I found that Windows Essentials Codec Pack is a collection of Video and Audio Codecs and tools that are required to Encode / Decode (i.e., PLAY) Audio and Video files. With Windows Essentials Codec Pack you should be able to play 99% of all the movies and music files that you download off the internet, and stay up to date with the latest Codecs through W.E.C.P's Audio / Video Codec Update Service.

Through this application, you can play Audio CDs, DVDs, (S)VCDs and XCDs on the fly, and it adds support for 3GP, AAC, AC3, APE, AVI, DivX, 3ivx, DAT, h.264, x264, AVC, Nero Digital, DTS, FLV, FLAC, HD-MOV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, M4A, MPC, MP3, MP4, MO3, MOD, MKV/MKA, MTM, OFR, TTA, OGG/OGM, S3M, Vorbis, VOB, WavPack, ATRAC3, XviD, XM, WV, UMX and many more formats so you could play any video / audio file with your favorite media player or with the free and wonderful Media Player Classic player that comes included with W.E.C.P.

Windows Essentials Codec Pack is just the media player software; According to Windows Vista Compatibility Center (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/), the program should be compatible with Windows Vista OS. Since it is the third-party application, we Microsoft could not get enough information from their provider. For the further supports, please contact with its own support center. Please understand that I do not mean to bounce you between supports; I just want to involve enough resource and direct you to the right channel. Thanks for your time and understanding!

    Good Luck!

I have no idea whether those two software you mentioned are exactly the same one, however all information provided is related to Windows Essentials Media Codec program. Feel free to install it on Windows Vista OS; if you get some problems in the future, just contact its support center. Good Luck~!

    Hi Andy,

I understand what Dave is concerned about.  There is a piece of Software out there called - and spelled Windows Essencials' that is prompting an update at startup.  It looks like a service pack of codex' that is not published by Microsoft, but that is trading on the similarity in name, so that people will imagine it to be safe.  This doesn't look like something I want to Download, although I am prompted to do so at startup...

This update service is a part of the Windows Essentials/Essencials Codec that you installed on your computer at one point.  The home page is http://www.mediacodec.org/  and it includes/involves the "Classic Media Player" you installed on your machine.  I got my copy from CNet's Download site, although I am certain it is available from other places.  A new version was released on Feb 2, 2009, so that is why you are now getting the "updates available" windows - you chose to allow it to check for updates during install.

    Andy/Dave and others:

I have been getting this "update notice" every time I reboot lately- with the spelling mistakes in the title and in the various programs  listed below.

I do not trust anything that does not spell their own program name correctly, but I have not been able to rid my system of the update request.

I am running Windows 2000.....I know, I'm old....and the updates will not install even if I try anyway......any guesses???

I have been getting the same problem.  I get the updater every time my computer starts, but it will not update.  I was afraid it was maybe a virus.  I did some research though, and it turns out it is just a bug with the program.  Also, the "Essencials" is spelled wrong on their site too, so either they suck at spelling, or it is on purpose.  Anyway I found this on their site, which you can find here: http://www.mediacodec.org/
