AnswerInstalling XP on Vista Computer

    Hi,

I have had to buy a new computer, and it comes installed with Vista.  One of the things that I HATE about Vista is that nothing that I used to be able to use is "compatible."  I have spent hours searching for proper drivers, to no avail.

So, how can I install my old Windows XP on my computer with Vista???  I have already tried it, and I install XP, and Vista doesn't work.  I fix the Vista, and the XP doesn't work!

    ???????????

It's getting VERY frustrating!  I can't transfer my daughter's video to my computer without XP, and I'm ready to throw the whole thing in the trash and get a MAC!

Can someone please tell me the EXACT way to install XP alongside Vista, so they both show up, and both work???

I have 2 hard drives.  The 2nd (spare) I disconnected until this is done (as I want to use it just for data storage).  The first has 2 partitions, "C" and "D" ("D" being the smaller partition).

I have Vista installed on "C" and I want to put XP on "D".

    Please help!!!!!

It sounds to me like your current Vista installation media is the restore disc that came with the computer and, when you are restoring Vista, you're using the restore disk which overwrites everything. If that's the case, you're hosed. Go buy a MAC.

If that's NOT the case, and you have a real, genuine Microsoft Windows Vista Full Installation or Upgrade DVD, you can do the following:

Repartition your hard drive into two partitions, giving a bit more space to the first partition you create because that's where Windows XP (the OS you say you use the most) will be located.

Install Windows XP on the first partition (C Drive) and apply all patches.

The next part is a bit tricky so pay close attention.

IF YOU HAVE THE FULL INSTALL VERSION, Boot from the Full Install DVD and perform a clean install of Vista to the second partition. It should create a boot loader menu that allows you to choose between the XP and Vista Operating Systems when you turn it on or reboot

IF YOU HAVE THE UPGRADE VERSION OF VISTA, Boot from the upgrade version DVD and start the installation process. Do NOT enter a product key yet!! and DO NOT upgrade the XP installation!!!!

Install a "clean" install onto the second partition of yout hard drive. Once that installation is fully complete, you should be presented with a boot loader menu when you first boot up that allows you to choose between XP and Vista.

Select Vista at the boot screen.

Once Vista has fully loaded and you're at the desktop, remove the DVD and then reinsert the Vista Upgrade DVD and let autorun start the setup program within Windows Vista. Now you can enter the Product key and upgrade the "already installed" Vista. Make sure when the setup program asks you which OS to upgrade that you choose the Vista install to upgrade and when it asks where you want to install it that you choose the Vista Partition.

Ok, I looked at the installation CD for both Vista and XP, and they are the originals (not the recovery cd's that came with the computer).  I had followed directions that you had given me, and it only lets me use Vista.  The only way I can even use XP is by running the install cd again, and then I lose my drivers.

Can you answer this?  Can I install XP on the main, and Vista on my other hard drive (the "spare") (which I had set to "slave")?

    Thanks for your help!
