Sachin Hi,
I have the same issue on my Gateway with Vista Ultimate 64 and 8GB ram. The error code is 80070490 when I try to install IE8 or Vista SP2. Please e-mail with instructions for logs debug to CSG809@hotmail.com
Another side issue I have is at the start-up of the PC a command windows opens from cmd.exe and states there is a Access Error, then goes away. Is there an easy fix for this? Thanks for the help.- The same thing is happening on my Mum's HP laptop.
On her machine, windows update is bust, and casting around the internet it seemed that the only solution was to reinstall the OS! So I tried SP2 instead, in the hope that it magically cleared up the issue. It didn't! I'm guessing the two problems are related.
I'm hoping there's a less drastic solution that can be found however, because I'm in the US and my mum is in the UK - so I can't remote desktop for an OS reinstall!

My box is thinkpad x61, pre-install vista, not have "VISTA DVD"

Thanks - Hi Sachin,
i've been having this problem as well, i've contacted microsoft and followed all the troubleshooting advice and everything but still this hasn't resolved the problem. i would really appreciate any help you could give me with this!! many thanks!! my email address is: jasdeep_singh_gill@hotmail.com
Jasdeep - Hi all, I have got this same problem. I have attempted to do this upgrade about 7 times in all, reverting to back up before and after running the Microsoft recommended actions.
I have now also completed the following steps for the 3rd time:
Run Readiness tool as on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 . This runs satisfactorily
Run every option as recommended is in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/947366 .
I always get the 'Element not found message - 0x80070490' even though I am using the complete downloaded stand-alone package. Can anyone give me a clue as to what element is missing.
I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 and 2 GB. The machine works well and I am up to date with all other MS and Lenovo fixes. - it been a month...is there any solution?
- Same problem as everyone else, and solution yet?
- If Repair had failed then simply means that the Component Based Servicing (CBS) couldn't be rectified; this being the case you might have to perform a clean installation.

Had the same problem a while ago. After conferring with a MS rep, we concluded it was due to some "corrupted" files in my laptop. I performed a factory restore and all is now well. SP2 downloaded and installed w/o a glitch and is running beautifully so far.
- I have the same issue on a DELL Studio 19 laptop with Vista Ultimate 32 bit OEM. My e-mail is momchevol@hotmail.com
- Sorry, I'm unfamilar with a factory restore. Is that the same as a partial restore from the install disk? thanks for the help.

In my case, my Lenovo SL 500 shipped with no OS install discs. The OS is on a partition of the hard drive.
So I guess the answer to your question is a yes. Initially, I was confused as to their 3 "R's".... Rescue, Recovery, Restore. After a call to a rep, it was a simple process involving only an F key press on start-up and following the on-screen directions.
- When I get to the "Which kind of installation do you want" dialouge box the "Upgrade" option is greyed out. The only choice available is "Custom" which will wipe out everything. If that is my only option is would be easier to live without sp2.
What's up MS, this is whole issue is pretty sad. - I just want to report that I have the same issue on Vista Business version.
With leveno X200. Error_not_found. - I have the same problem on a HP with Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Hasn't anyone found a solution yet? It's been a year. Pretty lousy service from Microsoft if you ask me.
