Does Vista SP1 RC support Realtek HD audio Driver?
After I installed Vista SP1 RC, I noticed that Realtek released a new driver for vista.
- I checked the updates; the Windows update wizard did not detect any update for my sound card.
- I navigated to Device Manager\ Sound Video and Game controllers, and right clicked “Realtek High Definition Audio”, and clicked on Update Driver. A new driver was found, and it was installed automatically.
- I was not able to play any audio file: There was no sound. I restarted my computer; still, there was no sound at all. I checked the Device Manager; the “High Definition” sound driver was installed.
- I manually downloaded the Realtek High Definition Driver from Realtek website and installed it: It worked.
Are you planning to add support for Realtek High Definition Driver in Vista Service Pack1?

We have our HD Audio class driver inbox. The 3rd party Realtek driver will not be inbox, but as you have seen it can be available for install from Windows Update depending on your machine. Can you let me know the driver version that was installed from Windows Update that did not work?

Thank you for the reply. Today, I tried to update the Realtek HD software driver from device manager for a second time, and I was able to produce same problem once again.
When I update the software, I get the following message:
Windows has successfully updated your driver software
Windows has finished installing the driver software for this device:
High Definition Audio Device
When I checked the Driver Properties, the Status was: “This device is working properly.”, but there was no sound.
I coppied the Driver Details from its properties, and Pasted below:
High Definition Audio Device

Was this a clean slipstream install of Vista SP1 RC?
Or was it an Update over RTM?

It was a clean install, I followed all the directions as it is mentioned in download.microsoft.com website. Infact, I had formatted my computer two weeks before installing Vista SP1 RC.

Hello I have a Realtek sound card as well. It came with my motherboard. I have the option to turn it off in the BIOS. This might be a dumb question but; have you checked your BIOS since the reformat?

I gave up on the realtek audio driver very early on during Vista RC1.
The MSFT inthebox driver works well enough.
Take a look at their README.txt file for driver . That is reason enough to be cautious.
