Vista Ultimate x64 - Programs and Features doesn't populate
- I run Vista Ultimate x64 with SP2 Beta (build 6002). When I try to remove the SP to replace with the RTM version I only see .NET Framework language packs listed in Uninstall or Change a Program; the progress bar continues to the middle of the red 'X' to the right of the location combo box then stops with the 'working' pointer still displayed. If I select View Installed Updates I get a whole list, but under Windows I only get repeated 'Update for Microsoft Windows (KB937286). I tried uninstalling that but it still shows the same. There are also some DreamScene entries with different KB numbers.
I'm stumped - any clues?

- Hi,
This behavior is by design. Hope following KB can help you.
When you use Windows Update to install an update in Windows Vista, the update may not appear in the Programs and Features item in Control Panel
Thanks. - Thanks for your time - but it's more than that. There are NO programs listed in the Programs and Features except .NET framework language packs - Office, SQL Server 2005/2008, and everything else is missing. In the View Installed Updates I get the KB937286 listed dozens of times but SP1 and SP2 Beta, for instance, are not listed; the KB in your reply mentions things like Defender definition updates and Plug & Play drivers - many KBs etc about installing Vista SP2 RTM talk about removing the Beta first from View Installed Updates in Programs and Features.
In addition the progress bar where Windows is searching for installed programs etc (on both the Uninstall or Change a Program and View Installed Updates views) runs across the combo box, keeps going to the middle of the red X, then stalls with the 'working' mouse pointer still spinning indefinitely. This is definitely a problem, not by design; on my laptop, for instance, the behaviour is exactlt as you'd expect - the progress bar runs to the end of the combo box then goes away and the pointer returns to normal, leaving a full list of programs. - Hi Tintin,
Thank you for your reply. In order to clarify and resolve the issue efficiently, could you please offer a screenshot for the issue?

- Hi,
I am just writing to see if you have had the opportunity to collect the requested information. If you have any questions with the previous information I've provided, please don't hesitate to let me know.
I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks. - I have this problem !
my program and features don't populate any programs, reinstalled many times but to no avail.
I'm running vista x64 sp2 (finale not beta) arabic edition on my acer 6930g laptop.
I also earlier had a problem of windows not being able to read my ntfs partition although ubuntu 9.04 x64 can, I had only one data drive besides the c: then (a small C: with D: taking the rest of the hdd) , so I used ubuntu live cd to move half my data from D: to somewhere else on the network, split the D: into 2 partitions (D: and E:) with one holding the rest of the data and the other free, I moved the data to the newly created partition and used vista x64 dvd to remove the other parition and create another one anew, and when I went back to windows I moved the data from the newly created E: to D: and then I used windows to reformat E: , so now I have C: D: and E: all formated using Windows ( to exclude the possibility of ubuntu messing things up).
earlier I read that parition corruption might be a cause of unexplained Programs and Features' lack of populating, but having done the previous procedures it still won't populate although my 3 drives are formated using windows.
I also have an ext3 and a swap partition for ubuntu at the end of the hdd, but they don't show up in windows I don't know if they're related.
this is the programs and features stalling :

I just wish I can uninstall programs once again :)- Edited byAmr Gameel Friday, July 31, 2009 4:09 PMcorrections
- I also forgot to mention that after I try to open "Programs and Features" even if I close it the computer is still slow, and the task manager still shows "explorer.exe" taking maximum cpu time (50% as I have a dual core intel core 2 duo). and this won't fix untill I restart.
- no word yet?
