Intermittent Internet and Network problems with VISTA SP1
SOLUTION.
After installing Vista SP1 RTM, do you are having intermittent network or Internet connection problems, where the connections seem to come and go and when they are working they are exceedingly slow?
Do you have Virtual PC 2007 installed?
Uninstall Virtual PC 2007 and everything will be sweetness and light again.
The seems to be a problem with Virtual PC 2007 and Vista SP1.
It took me 27 (yes, really 27) reinstalls of Vista with SP1 to isolate what was causing the problem.
Can somebody report this as a bug oficially as I don't know how to report bugs.
By the way ...
If you have problems with Vista after you have installed SP1 update, then reformat the drive and instead install the version of Vista with SP1 already built into it, the DVD is called "Vista with SP1" and was released after the SP1 update only was released.
You will then have far fewer problems with drivers etc, and it is a lot, lot quicker to install !
Believe me, I have done it 27 times !

I stll can not find the RTM download. Do you have a link to it?- Hi,
I ran into this problem just a couple of days ago.. my connection has been terribly slow on the Sp1 machine.
I have SP1 installed since the day it was officially released to MSDN. Virtual PC for about the same time as well.
However, my connection problems only started about 3 or 4 days ago..
I was getting TCP connection limit messages (for half-open connections) in the event log and messed with a pseudo driver that was supposed to increase this limit. I removed it since it didn't bring any noticable improvements. Now I'm not sure whether this is only a coincidence.
What causes the slow connection when Virtual PC is the origin of the problem?
How did you isolate that?
Jo I have network problems after installing SP1, and have never installed or used Virtual PC 2007. I have nForce 680 dual gigabit ethernet on my mobo, and it is completely broken. Netwrok is just fine for my WinXP machine (so it's not the annoying SBC DSL going down =).
Any tips or links to a fix?
Thanks
nothing like solving your own problem!
On opening the HW device manager, there's two nForce netwroking controllers: "NVIDIA nForce Netwroking Controller" and "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller #2". Disabling the first controller fixes my troubles, and networking looks good so far.
ciao,
Thank you Neil. Sounds very like the problem I had with a Vista Business machine at work. It has Virtual PC 2007 installed. I just gave up looking for a solution and simply uninstalled the SP thinking I will wait for someone smarter to figure this one out.
I'm next in the office on Wednesday 26 so I will uninstall VPC and reinstall SP1. I will post the outcome here.
Update : Uninstalling Virtual PC 2007 did the trick for me too. Vista with SP1 installed easily and appears to be working well, eg copying files on the network is now considerably faster. I found some other postings in this forum that also indicate VPC2007 is problematic. As a workaround other posters suggest disabling VPC2007 services http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2700513&SiteID=17
- Still no fix or workaround to get VPC2007 working normally with Vista SP1? It's hard finding other threads about this issue in general.
- Trevz, I think this one needs to be reported as a bug. To be honest I have not bothered myself, as I can't actually find where to do that on the Microsoft website after spending a lot of time looking for it. I will post another question(http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3184439&SiteID=17) asking if anyone knows.
- Hey Madam3181.. Sounds good.. Thanks..
- I've had service pack 1 installed for about 2 months and I don't have Virtual PC installed but just a couple of days ago, I started experiencing intermitent connection and slow connection to the net. Any ideas?
