Unable to install any Windows Security updates

We have a laptop with Windows XP SP3 installed that has not been used in awhile (maybe a year or so), and now there is a need for it. I went to bring it up to date with Windows XP Security updates and hotfixes and Windows Update tells me 117 updates are available. But the laptop fails when it attempts to download any of them.
The laptop can access the internet.
The laptop has been scanned for viruses and seems to be completely clean. Does anyone know why it will not download any updates from Microsoft?

Friday, February 15, 2013 5:15 PMDo you get any actual error messages or does it just say "Failed"?

Friday, February 15, 2013 5:40 PMIn the update history it gives a code of 0x80246008 and then directs me to the Windows Update NewsGroup. There are threads there but none address a mass failure of all updates or a definitive explanation of the error code.

Have you confirmed that BITS is on and configured as called out here?

I had no idea that BITS is involved with Windows Updates.
Many thanks.
