I found this link helpful - it's one to micosoft but much more easily used than most I've tried.
http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/910339
It provides various things to try - with easy to follow instructions.
Eventually I solved the problem with Microsoft's Fixit Tool. There's a link to it on the link above.
I ran fixit 3 times in default mode before it stopped diagnosing errors on the third run.
Eventually I had to run it in non default mode before it actually fixed the problem.
Here's another link to Microsoft tools which I didn't use but look useful

The problem has occured again when a new set of updates became due.
The following will not install
Security Update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2 X86 Edition (KB2628259)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB2646524)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2012 (KB890830)I have run fixit several times - it keeps reporting the same error - reports it's fixed it then finds the same error
1. Windows update components must be repaired - fixed
2. Default windows update locations have changed - checked Repair default windows update locations - NOT RUN!
No explanation why not run!
Googled Repair default windows update locations
done
Method 1: Download and install the Windows Update Agent - reports not required
Method 2: Register the Wups2.dll file - reports success
Problem still not fixed - updates will not install

It's a standad error for all Updates for "Media Center Edition 2005 Rollup ..." (occuring now for the 3rd time).
There are two solutions:
1. Cretae the mentioned registry key manually using "regedit" and let the automatic update do the rest.
2. Download the update and do what Microsoft itself does with this error: ignore it

Hi, I had exactly the same problem as Jim with KB2619340 and now again with KB2628259. Fixit (which I've found good in the past) didn't help. With KB2619340, eventually I raised a support case with Microsoft and exchanged several emails with a very nice engineer. The update was failing exactly as Old Vermonter describes , i.e. "Setup could not back up registry key". The MS engineer told me to click "ignore" for this error, and the Update then succeeded. I fully expect to find the problem+workaround are the same with KB2628259. (Will let u know!). In a way it's good to know I don't have a unique problem with my PC but on the other hand, there is clearly some underlying problem specific to XP Media Center Edition 2005 Rollup 2 X86 Edition that is interfering with some updates on some machines......

Yes, downloaded the update from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=28660 as stated by Old Vermonter, restarted PC in Safe Mode, ran the Update, when error message appeared clicked "ignore", update completed successfully. Restarted PC and Automatic Update confirms now no outstanding updates.
Hope I don't have to do too many more updates this way!
cheers

I also downloaded the update from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=28660 but didn't use safe mode just normal start up.
I got the same message during install and clicked 'retry' once and it worked.
I had a very similar problem before Christmas, also with a Security Update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup etc. I thought it might be because I upgraded from XP Media Center edition to Professional.

XP Media Centre Edition
Update KB2628259 - just to clarify the issues here.
This was the last one which refused to install for me.
Googled msdownloads KB2628259 - the option to download it was provided
Download it and save it. Then double click the saved file (manual update)
Give an error - just click Retry. Update then competed with reported success and automatically rebooted.
Then went to MsUpdate. The success doesn't list as a successful update.
However, if you proceed with the update procedure it no longer lists as a required update.

Thanks all for your help. I had lots of failed updates but installed them all one-by-one except these two:
Security Update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2 X86 Edition (KB2619340)
Security Update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2 X86 Edition (KB2628259)Fixed this by creating the registry key as Akinfi suggests (because it looks like this may recur). Do it like this:
Start -> Run -> regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Updates -> Windows XP -> SP3
R. CLick on SP3 -> New -> Key
Give it the name KB2628259
After that the updates both installed.
Cheers
