    In order to install the final SP3 I have to uninstall SP3 RC2 which I have
    been running since it's release!

    When uninstalling from Control Panel -> Add / Remove Programs all I get is a
    message box stating "The system cannot find the file specified."
    Running the uninstall manually and logging gives me the reason:
    InstallSingleCatalogFile: MyInstallCatalog failed for kb900725.cat;
    error=0x8e5e0402.

    I have uninstalled kb900725 manually but that changed nothing !
    Ok - now what do I do ?
    I'm pretty much left clueless !

    I was having a issue with XP sp3 uninstalling, it would go so far and tell me a file was missing. After turning on the log feature I found the real issue was it was unable to create a file needed for restoring the catalogs. Googling the error I came across the Microsoft kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798, yes it talks about installing issues but for me the issues documented was also causing the uninstall failure. I executed the following methods 3,9, and 10 and was then able to uninstall SP3.  Hope it works for you.  Good luck.

    In regedit, try checking the following registry keys. (Please create them if they are not present already.)

    Set them to the values mentioned.

    HKLM, SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Language, Default (REG_SZ), 0x0000

    HKCU, Control Panel\International, Locale (REG_SZ) , 0x0000

    Thanks Chris,
       The addition of one key and adding a value for the other solved the same problem for me.

    I too cannot remove SP3, http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/showpost.aspx?postid=3689435&siteid=17 .  So I tried that method above, and not only did that not fix it, but I restarted after the reg changes thinking that may help, and it rendered my PC bootless!  The only way I start the PC was to hit F5 and boot into last known good configuration!

    Now I guess I'll try what's at the MS link.  Ok, well I tried 3, 9 and 10, and not a go**amn one of them worked either.  Still can't remove the SOB.  Now what?

    I found out what the problem was.  I looked over that log file again I pasted in my 2nd post at the other thread URL I gave (apparently others missed it), look at the last blue bold area.  Msmsgs files are Windows Messenger, and that's what was missing.  As always, it would never shut down even after REMOVING IT, disabling the Service, and even after deleting the main exe file!  I got so PO'd I just deleted every file pertaining to it!  That was months ago.  Unbeknownst to me, all original files have to be in place in order to remove a service pack!

    So I went to the Recycle Bin and restored them, then I was able to remove SP3.  Then the serious problems started....I could not reinstall SP3!  I tried and tried, the furthest I got appeared to get to the end of the file copying, then I got something like "extended error", I can't remember exactly now, and "SP3 was not installed".  That after a freakin' 30 min wait!!  Since then, my @!#$~% POS PC refused to boot.

    Trying to install SP3 destroyed something on the PC, and now instead of booting it throws that typical BS about windows\system32\system\config (not sure of the path now, that's just going from memory, but we've all seen it), being corrupted or missing!  The go**amn recovery console installed does not work, nor hitting "r" for repair when booting off the CD, because, again unbeknownst to be, anytime a file is removed/changed/modified in the system32 folder or system32\drivers folder, it renders the freakin' "R"epair option useless!!!!!

    When trying to fix the BSOD\reboot loop error, I deleted/restored/replaced, etc., repeatedly, the sbp2port.sys file.  "R"epair would not work, it kept stopping saying the file was missing!  Now it's still doing this even though I put the original file back in all its places!!!  Someone from MS sent me a beta patch for the BSOD issue which I have been testing, but the patch was even uninstalled before all this!  So it could also be that this patch screwed up something with regards to the file (which the patch replaces with another version).  So I am screwed now, I'm going to have to reformat the mofo.  (I'm on another PC now of course).  I'm going to be down for a while now having to start all f'ing over again.
