i am trying to install xp through winpe. the "official" way of doing in through wds is too long a process.

first the partition the hdd with one primary partition as ntfs.

then i copy the entire i386 folder from the cd to the c partition and startup the winnt32.exe from c:\i386. it starts up the setup, gives an error about copying some .dll file (which i skip) and then finishes.

when i check c: it has only couple of $ files and some system files. almost all the system files are missing. I followed this guide. this issue has been the same on every system I tried.

This forum is for Windows Desktop Software development compatibility issus, not for any ITPro or system usage issues. I will help to move it to the TechNet forum, thanks.

i figured it out. winpe makes the boot sector vista/7 compatible. you have to run bootsect /nt52 to make it xp compatible.
