Phone activation reports no support

A friend inherited an XP Pro system from his son's law office. He asked me if I could clean it up to use in his home.
I found that it had been configured to be part of a network domain. All attempts to change it to a home workgroup were rebuffed by making the fields needed for change into locked controls. Since the original Product Key sticker was on the side of the case, I decided to format the drive and reload WinXP (SP3) from a Technet download, but reuse the activation Product Key from the sticker.
When I entered that original key, I got an error message that I must have mistyped the key, as the activation could not occur. Alternatively, if I thought I had entered they key correctly, I could call the activation center and try there. After verifying that I had entered the key correctly, I called the number displayed via the activation wizard, and was greeted by an IVR system that led me through the process of entering a string of displayed digits. When I had finished entering the string, the system then reported a message to the effect that the product was no longer supported, and hung up without any further recourse.
I fail to understand why this Product Key is being rejected. It is proportedly the same key as originally used with the original WinXP Pro install (albeit, probably before SP3). Why, since XP is supposed to be supported for another 500+ days, is this key being rejected; both online and via phone?

Carey,
The article you reference is for Win7, not WinXP. However, I tried to use the XP equivalent, and got the same problem.
As to the Windows Product Key Update Tool, I'm not familiar with that. Is it a separate download from somewhere? Your reference to it had no link to explanatory text, so I didn't know how to proceed.
