    I can't update to Media Player 11, it says I'm blocked, but everything else updates OK. It's an old desktop which I had wiped a while ago,

    Can you elaborate on you're blocked? what error message appears? also have you tried the standalone installer instead of via Windows Update?

    Hi

    it just says my code has been blocked and  directs me to info about counterfeit products, but as I said, I get other Windows updates. I did get the PC checked over by a friend's son a while back. I'm wondering whether he tinkered with it. (this is with the standalone installer, I get no error messages when auto updates occur)

    OK,

    I would recommend to download and install the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation tool from Microsoft's download centre and see if your version of Windows is genuine...It may be that your friend's son has done something he shouldn't have done.

    Failing that, change the product code from the one already in the system to the sticker that's on the side of your PC.... more info about that here:

    thanks for that reply - I decided to change the product code (seemed easy!). Managed to de-activate XP, but when I tried to input the code, it comes up as incorrect code. I rang a Microsoft helpline, who re-directed me to Dell, as it came pre-installed. Dell have been pretty useless. I'm going to try again with them when I have time, but if I do a system restore will that put me back to my previous state, or have I deactivated XP for good? Forgive my ignorance, but the PC seems to be running OK atm. Might it have done its own restore when the activation failed? (I read that somewhere yesterday!)

    OK, glad it's sorted...not heard of it rectifying itself before :P if only all PC problems done that.

    not quite sorted. The PC seems to be running OK even though the reinstall of Windows failed because my Product Code came up as incorrect. I've checked and re-checked the code. I don't understand why I get all auto updates from Windows but can't use Media Player at all

    Hi,

    Possible to provide the list of KB's which was loaded onto your machine ?

    Are you still getting windows updates ?

    Were you able to install WMP 10 ?

    Hi

    I guess a KB is Knowledge Base. How do I find out the info you want please?
    I do get Windows updates, but not for Media Player
    I think I had Player 10, the trouble started when I tried to upgrade to 11. 

    When I run the validation, it directs me to buy genuine microsoft products, and when I input the Product Key I got from Dell in 2005, it says incorrect Product Key
