ie8 tabs are not showing but work in backgroud
-
Thursday, August 20, 2009 12:16 PMI have IE8 installed on WinXP Pro.
From some reason the tabs are not shown but clicking crtl+t open new tab but you can't go back to the previous one cause you don't see the tabs.
Disabling all add-ons didn't help.
Any suggestions?

Thursday, August 20, 2009 6:08 PMHave you checked to make sure that you had tabbed browsing enabled?
-
Sunday, August 23, 2009 5:55 AMOf course. This was the first thing.
Tabs are opening but in the background. How do I know? When I try to close the IE it asks me if to close all tabs.

Sunday, August 23, 2009 6:58 AMlook and see if these registry keys are there "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TabbedBrowsing" Open new tabs next to the current tab OpenAdjacent (DWORD) 1
; Enable Quick Tabs QuickTabsThreshold (DWORD) 2

are you by any chance using group policy
-
Sunday, August 23, 2009 7:06 AMYes we do, but we didn't configure anything special for this IE8 and we have many more IE8 on the network without this problem. It's only on one WinXP SP3 laptop, Dell E5500.

Sunday, August 23, 2009 7:11 AMdo you have a GPO to "enable classic shell" ,, you can check here "User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer : Enable Classic Shell" ,, If you do then that sometimes implies no tabbed browsing by default

Call me confused, but it seems that you're saying the tab portion of the IE8 window is missing? I'm guessing that each toolbar is considered an addon, and in fact, IE8 is actually just a GUI that utilizes the Browser DLL.
Did you try repairing the IE8 installation by downloading it and installing it again?

ok confused, your a little off on that, the two main components are Browserui.dll and Shdocvw.dll, and theres three main second level ones, Mshtml.dll, Urlmon.dll, and WinInet.dll. but, the thing is, if theres any security related software, or any other that hooks the IE shell, it could stop functioning correctly if its uninstalled and reinstalled. now, somtimes uninstalling is the best thing and the easiest, but that would depend on what other applictions on there that hooks IE also. sometimes reinstalling means also having to reinstall those -
Thursday, September 03, 2009 7:33 PMThanks for the details on IE, securityguy.
Do you think repairing will do harm if there's a missing section of the toolbar/an entire toolbar missing?

No, under the circumstances that might be the thing that needed. I think that I would try to install on top of whats there though first ( an overlay install) I know for IE7 at least I've done that and kept from having to reinstall everthing else. I'm not completely sure how it will do with IE8, but I cant see that it would be any different. the differences between the two browers isnt any that would keep that from working from what i've seen. I would download and do an offline install (in safe mode just to be sure) of the IE on top of the old installation ( an overlay) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=341c2ad5-8c3d-4347-8c03-08cdecd8852b- Proposed As Answer by mbrownnyc Thursday, September 03, 2009 8:19 PM

I had this problem too today, and I found some way around it.
I checked the Windows classic style as someone suggested here. I played with the style pull-down menu, pressed OK (with the same selection as before) and then restarted IE8, the tab bar is back! :-) When I play with the style again but then press CANCEL instead of OK, and then restart IE8, the tab bar is gone again... so just try this before you re-install IE8.
But anyway this seems like a bug that Microsoft should fix.- Proposed As Answer by Tejas-Desai Saturday, October 24, 2009 7:39 AM

Thursday, October 22, 2009 8:15 AMHi, Tried this solution without success. I must say that this problem is only in one computer.
Even uninstall and reinstall of the IE8 didn't help.
Still, can't see the tabs, though, they're for sure in the background.

I have exactly the same symptoms on my laptop (Win XP Pro SP3 - DELL Latitude E6500). Tabs are opening but only in the background. The only way to navigate between tabs is by using CTRL+Tab.
Tab-browsing used to work after I installed IE8 but it stopped working somewhen after running a windows update.
Also when I want to manage add-ons, I only get a gray box named "Manage add-ons" without any content.
I have tried many things but nothing is working.
1) starting IE (No Add-ons)
2) checking tabs settings (disabling and re-enabling)
3) Reset IE settings to original settings
4) re-registering dlls as mentioned on some other websites
5) I would like to install IE8 a new but windows won't let me uninstall it - apparently too many applications have been installed in the mean time and it fails (I guess because of some dependencies). Even when I start Windows in safe mode, it is not possible to uninstall.
Can it be specific to DELL or some specific hardware configuration?
It is not a must for me to have this fixed, it is just annoying. I am only using IE for microsoft update otherwise I use Firefox for web browsing.

Thursday, March 18, 2010 2:00 PMUdi Burg's description of his problem is exactly the same thing I was experiencing. The only thing I'd add is that you can still ctrl-tab between your tabs even if you can't see them.
After reading eranb66's response I remembered that I was playing around with Windows Display Properties right before this issue popped up. So I went to the Themes tab and chose Windows XP. I changed it back from a modified version of Windows Classic, and suddenly my tabs came back. -

I had this exact problem today
After a long search I even considered trying all the tips in this forum. Then I tried the next "Trick":
un-checked "Enable tabbed browsing", closed IE8, open Internet options and re-checked "Enable tabbed browsing".
It works. easy. try it. no need for any registry changes. simply turn it off and on again.

Just had a user report this same condition and this work around was the answer.
She changed her desktop Theme so she could add a picture and caused this to happen.
Changed Theme back to Windows Classic and reopen IE with Tabs restored.
Nice job itarot!!!

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 4:52 PMYep, this fixed the problem for me as well. I don't think it is obvious that simply selecting a different style, and then cancelling out of it, will change the way in which IE displays (or doesn't display, in this case) the tab bar, so I'm glad I found this post!

The ensure IE8 tabs are functioning please verify that "xmllite.dll" is in system32.
If it is not please put it there and restart IE8, and tabs will likely work.
Additionally, you can make sure the following dlls register:
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll Succeeded
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll Succeeded
regsvr32 mshtml.dll The dll was loaded but.... This is OK.
regsvr32 browseui.dll Succeeded
regsvr32 jscript.dll Succeeded
regsvr32 vbscript.dll Succeeded
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll Succeeded
regsvr32 urlmon.dll Succeeded

Try to open a tab then press "ctrl" + "tab" keys (press both simultaneously); that will tell you if tabs are working.
So that means they are working, but are not visible.
To that end,

Hello all. I've tried all of the above recommendations to no success. Thx for the suggestions but I found the solution for us all
Complete Internet Repair is the application's name and it can be downloaded off of cNet via download(dot)com. Out of all of the available options to choose from I checked Repair Internet Explorer ONLY.
The direct download for this file is http://download.cnet.com/Complete-Internet-Repair/3000-2094_4-75332305.html
WARNING: After the application runs it will force you to reboot and close any and all apps or windows. All of your troubles will be over BUT the reboot is not a request. SAVE any projects that are open because the system WILL REBOOT. Voila.
