Failed - Access Denied Vista computer

Originally I had Failed - Access Denied for 3 remote computers on a peer to peer network.

The steps in the Getting_Started Guide did work for the Windows XP (SP3) computers.

To configure Windows Firewall exceptions for workgroups and Windows NT 4.0–based domains

1. Using the Local Security Policy tool available from the Administrative Tools menu of the computer to be inventoried, click Security Settings, click Local Policies, and then click Security Options.

2. In the Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts section, click Classic – local users authenticate as themselves.

3. Manually run the following command, or run it from a logon script on each computer to enable the remote administration exception:

netsh firewall add portopening protocol=tcp port=135 name=DCOM_TCP135

4. Manually run the following command, or run it from a logon script on each computer to enable the file and printer sharing exception:

netsh firewall set service type=fileandprint mode=enable profile=all

Found for a Vista computer that step 4 gave

Error with all Windows 2008 R2 assessments - Unknown - Cannot Determine CPU Address Width

I have just installed the latest version of the MAP Tool kit 4.0.2925.0 and whilst I can reliably get good hardware assessment reports for Windows 2008 and Vista, I always get an 'Unknown - Cannot Determine CPU Address Width' error message with Windows 2008 R2 reports in the 'Ready to run Windows Server 2008 R2' column.

Can anyone give me a clue as to why this is?

I am running it on a Vista SP1 laptop and had uninstalled the previous version of MAP.

process "InventoryResult" Excelsheet fails with arithmetic overflow (MAP 5.0)

The File "InventoryResults-11-20-2009-10h11m55s" looks like the following after I reached a number of 100 inventoried clients. Is this some limitation or a bug in the beta version? This is using Windows 7 with Excel 2007. Also the list in "Inventory Summary Results" -> "All computers" is now empty.

Restore of backuped database fails, if database name include spaces (MAP 5.0)

I was not able to restore a database with about the following name "company - laptops". The commandline options of "RestoreCustomerDatabase.cmd" do not allow to use spaces (at least not in combination with minusses) and renaming the backup file does not help as the original name is stored inside the file.

Also, my backups are named with different ending databasename.bak, not databasename.bkp. Is this a different file, or a change in the ending in the 5.0 version?

Is it possible to rename the database to make a working backup? I do not want to start from scratch just to be able to make backups of the database.

unplaced machines

Folks,

I have installed MAP 4 on a windows 7 machine with a view to get a server consolidation report.

This report gives me several unplaced machines in the report.

The performance data report reports all machines (appart from one but thats ok its a firewall issue and I'll deal with that) as 100% collections. and I can see the various rows of data in the performance statistics spreadsheets.

In summary all machines have sucessfully inventoried via WMI - all machines have full collections reported (appart from 1) the data was collected over 2x 1:30hr periods so should have got more than the required 10 perf counter measurement requirements - yet in the server consolidation report spreadsheet the unplaced machines are being reported as unplaced because of insufficent performance data.

FI the total number of machines is 26 that I am gathering sizing info for.

In the GUI version the machines are missing data in the total GB and IOPs colums yet there appears to be no equilvent fields in the permormance metrics spreadsheet report and no obvious data is missing here

Thoughts?

MAP tool only works when connecting to single machines, not when mass-checking (possible Kerberos error)

Hi,

we have a problem that the tool fails when we try to invetory the whole list of computers in our AD. When we try to inventor single PCs, it works fine.
The only obvious error we have seen so far is in the Event Log File on the MAP-(server) side:

The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server MXXX081$. This indicates that the password used to encrypt the kerberos service ticket is different than that on the target server. Commonly, this is due to identically named machine accounts in the target realm (AD.COMPANY.DE), and the client realm. Please contact your system administrator.

user complaints during assessment (harddisk configuration changed)

Hi,

one the users of the PCs being analysed complained about a pop-up window during assessment (translated by me from German):

"The total-capacity of the harddisk in your system was decreased. This is typically NOT a hardware-problem. Please contact your helpdesk, in case you did not change the harddiskconfiguration in your system or deaktivated hardware in the system-setup."

Could this be caused by the MAP-tool?

SQL Server Express installation failure

When I tried to install MAP I get:
The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit Setup Wizard failed while installing SQL Server Express Edition.
The SQL Server installer requires a reboot to complete the installation of SQL Server Express.

Please restart your computer and run the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit Setup Wizard again to complete the installation.

Failed - Connection time out

This issue is discussed in WMI Problems. However the final result is unknown.

All computers have Windows 32 bit XP SP3.

Problem 1.

What is known is that when I try to run the Wbemtest.exe on the local machine I get Number: 0x80041064 Facility: WMI Description: User credentials cannot be used for local connections. I was using my domain username and password. I am a member of the domain administrator which is the member of the local administrators. What is the software looking for?

If I try to the connect to the remote computer, I get Number 0x800706ba Facility: Win32 Description: The RPC server is unavailable. My understanding this is probably the Windows Firewall.

Problem 2.

The Getting_Started_Guide states:

Enable Remote Administration exception

The Remote Administration exception needs to be enabled for computers when the Windows Firewall is enabled. This exception opens TCP port 135. If you have another host firewall installed, you will need to allow network traffic through this port.

To allow for remote administration

1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.

2. Under Console Root, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Network, expand Network Connections, expand Windows Firewall, and then click Domain Profile.

3. Right-click Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception, and then click Properties.

4. Click Enabled, and then click OK.

I can not find the Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception in Windows Server 2008.

Is this setting done through setting Windows Firewall: Allow local port exceptions to enable then setting the Windows Firewall: Allow inbound Remote Desktop exceptions for ports TCP 135?

When run MAP I get SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio Analog Devices, Inc. The latest driver for this device is available on the Windows Update website.

I went to http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us and ran a custom check for updates and found no hardware updates. Should I have been using I different procedure?

Will MAP include the later /update Hardware library?

Hi,

I been using the MAP tools for my Server cosolidations report. however i notice the hardware library does not contain latest hardware spec releases. Example Intel x55 series processors with QPI rather than FSB counters.
I have ran the update however i was not able to get any updated hardwares. How / can we create / get update for this section?

MAP - Inventory and Assessment Wizard failed

HI,

sorry I am new to this. I tried to search this forum but I couldn't found the problem I have. I just installed the new MAP 4.0.2925.0.
I started the inventory and assessment wizard. It looks like it starts...entering all the credentials and either an IP address or AD identification.
But then when the wizard start collecting the information it stops with this pop-up. Saying : "An error occurred while collecting inventory data. You will need to close and rerun the wizard."
I did a couple of times..even rebooted the machine where it is installed. I checked Remote registry service is running on the remote compouter I want to check....firewall is off.
I am running this tool on a windows Xp workstation.

That is all I have ;-) any hint would be great

Can any body explain about the architecure of MAPS(how it is connected to databse and export that infromation as reports). MAPS provides any dlls or webservices to get the inventory information from SQL database.(Case: Integration of MAPS with another Application.I want to know how much MAPS supports for this integration)Actually, i need to get the devices inventory infromation from MAPS database with out doing any manipulations to the MAPS DB and need to port the information in to another application database.

I have installed the MAP 4.0 on 4 different operating system with 8 - 12GB of ram. I have around 10,000 device to scan and no more then 5 mins into it the App crashes or gives me a System.OutOfMemory error. These systems I have tried to run it on still show plenty of available memory. I saw someone below with a simular issue. Please help.

Logon Failure when connecting to another forest

I have installed the latest download and I am trying it for the first time. I have installed into my test environment and I want to invetory all the server on a different subnet. Al the servers on this other subnet belong to a different domain (in a different forest). I have administrator accounts in both domains and I am confident that the target domain can be resolved via DNS. I have checked the FQDN of the domain and also the user account and retyped the password (I even logged on the other domain to check that my account was not locked out).
Whne I enter the details I get a message saying "Logon failure while connecting to the domain, invalid username or password. Specify a valid username and password and try again.
What could be causing this error?

Does MAP overwrite data information gathered from previous scans?

What I need to know is does it overwrite the database information gathered from each machine or server if the amount of memory being used has changed from the previous scan? And does it remove a machine that was online on one scan and offline on the second scan?

I have 9 servers that are collecting data fine. 1 server will connect fine but never collects any performance data? All servers are 2003 and in the same domain. The server that does not collect data even shows that the WMI connections work both outside and inside the MAP Toolkit? The only error I can find anywhere is from the MAP Toolkit log. The error is PerfCollector.PerformanceFailCB Exited for target: ProgressPage.TaskProgressChangedCallback. OK that clears things right up? Even the Internet has not heard much about this error. What else can I do? I cannot prepare a Virutalization report as this server is running SQL and is a key server?

I did a test Inventory and assessment of 5 servers that we are planning on upgrading to Server 2008 R2. Looks like it ran OK and retuned results that my servers are ready for Windows 7, Windows Vista and Server 2008 SP2 but retuned a result of 100% Insufficient Data to let me know if they are ready for Server 2008 R2. It's my first time to install MAP 4.1. My machine is a Windows XP Professional SP2 x86 and I've installed all the requirements but when I run the MAP 4.1 installer, it says that I don't have .net 3.5 even if I have it installed. I try to use MAP to connect the clients runing that OSs in VMWare, but failed.
And I faced the same problem that one blog asked, when use MAP to detect Windows Server 2003 R2 Enpterise Edition CHS. It reported "Unknown - Cannot Determine CPU Address Width", so the computer data marked as "insufficent data".

Installing i cannot get past the installer trying to install SQL MSDE and this fails. Even though i have SQL express 2005 already installed.
Is there a way to get the installer not to install SQL and just install the tool?

MAP inventory keeps crashing

I have installed and tried to run the newest MAP program on 3 different systems and it takes all of the CPU and Memory resources and then crashes and reboots the system.
One was Windows XP SP2 and the other 2 systems have been Windows 7 x64 RC.

This happens anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes into the scan of 14,000 systems, but has never gotten past 500 systems checked. I noticed that the program limits itself to about 300 threads, I wonder if there is a way to limit the nuber of threads further.

I plan on running the performance feature of MAP for an extended period of time. Which metrics from a performance and capacity perspective should I keep an eye on in order to confirm that the servers I'm monitoring aren't being impacted? I may run the for up to a 24 hour period.

we gathered some Data from a Customer System. Now i have the SQL Databases and a XP Client where i have installed the MAP Toolkit. How can i import/start with this SQL Data on my System. I want to analyse the Data from our Customer.

3.1 RTM: when I fill out the information (accounts, what to scan) the tool starts a modal dialog and scans my machines.

This runs annoyingly in the foreground ...

When I cancel it looses all entered data

I have run the MAP tool and it was very helpfull for our Hyper-V server metrics but when I look at Windows 7 Readiness I am totally confused. I have a pie chart showing how many clients are incapable of running Windows 7 and how many are not ready but no information about which workstations they are. If I run the "Generate Report" it succeeds and it show the processor finished but I never see anything. Do I need to drill down into the file system to find the report? How do I find out which computers are not capable and which need attention?

MAP 4.0 and Proxy Authentication

Hi, I have noticed in the log MAP tool's log file that it tries to download BIOS updates, but fails in doing so. The reason being (402) Proxy Authentication Required. Hence I don't have all the processor types and so on for report generation. I cannot see any setting to configure a proxy username and password for the tool.

Is there a way to manually download these updates and place them in a folder?
