Dart8 with Server2008R2/WINPE4
-
Monday, February 18, 2013 1:06 PM
Hello,
i have a MDT-environment with WINPE4 installed on Server2008R2.
The standard-installation of Dart8 prevents from installing on Server2008R2.
When installing Dart7 and starting a VM will reboot in the process (i think because Dart7 isn`t supported with MDT2012?)
When copying tools.cab from DART8 and import in MDT-bootimage, NO DART8-screen will appear during Pxe-Boot.
What can be done to have a combination of DART8/WINPE4 and MDT2012?
Somebody who is having a working senario like this?
Thx

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 8:50 AMSo it seems the combination of ADK/Server2008R2/Dart8 will not work?

Install Dart 8 using the admin switch. (msiexec.exe /a msdart80.msi). When it is installed, it should add a Toolx86.cab and Toolsx64.cab to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft DaRT 8\v8. Those cab files need to be copied to the correct directories, respective to architecture, on \\server\mdtshare\tools. Start/restart the MDT workbench and verify Dart 8 is now an option for boot images. (Share properties -> Windows PE -> Features tab.) Once that's completed, you will need to update your deployment share or media to create new boot images. I've had to mark "Completely regenerate boot images" for this to work successfully.
Note that you do not need to install Dart 8 on your server for this to work. You just have to install it somewhere so you can get the cab files.

Hi FNO,
i have installed DART8 on the server on the way you mentioned.
When i am in the pxe-screen DART8 is not listed (while this working in a lab with server2012/ADK/MDT2012 is working well).
Is dart8 supported with the combination ADK/Server2008R2 ? or should dart7 be used?
Thx

I tried to reinstall dart8 again using the admin-switch, but after doing the credentials during pxe boot, no interface is displayed to choose between Deployment of Dart8.
Any other options? Is dart8 compatible with ADK and Server2008r2?
Thx
update :
Update : i did also extra Dart7 using admin-switch /a and then added dart7 x86 to my x86-bootimages of MDT.
I receive the following error that indicates that Dart7 will not work with ADK(windows8)
What will be a working combination for Server2008r2/ADK and Dart (7 or 8).
Thx

If you are using the Windows ADK - and regenerated your boot images, thus using WinPE 4.0 - you will use Dart 8. The error message shown does appear like you are using WinPE 4.0; Dart 7 cannot be used with it. Since it looks like the boot image already contains the Dart 7 tools, you will want to uncheck the tools in Properties\Windows PE\Features, and then check the Dart 8 tools. You may also need to completely regenerate boot images when you update the deployment share - don't just perform an update.
The properties should look as follows:
This sort of scenario (Server 2008 R2 / ADK / Dart 8 / MDT 2012 Update 1) is absolutely supported and exactly what I'm using now in production.-Nick O.

Pretty much same question as the other thread, so I'll copy my answer here, too:
Well, let's be clear about what supports what:
WAIK can be installed on 2003 / Vista / 2008 / 7 / 2008R2
ADK can be installed on Vista / 2008 / 7 / 2008R2 / 8 / 2012
WinPE 3 (based on Win 7 / 2008R2) can be used to deploy XP / 2003 / Vista / 2008 / 7 / 2008R2 / 8 / 2012
WinPE 4 (based on Win 8 / 2012) can be used to deploy XP / 2003 / Vista / 2008 / 7 / 2008R2 / 8 / 2012 (so far as I know, I can't find the ref right now)
DaRT 7 can be used with a running OS of 7 / 2008R2 / WinPE3
DaRT 8 can be used with a running OS of 8 / 2012 / WinPE4
MDT 2012U1 can be installed on 2008SP2 / 7 / 2008R2 / 8 / 2012That said, your "Dart8/ADK/Server2008r2" question will not work, because DaRT 8 does not support 2008R2. However, I think you meant to ask if you can deploy DaRT 8 from MDT using ADK on Server 2008R2. The answer to that is yes, as long as the OS you are pushing / installing it into is 8 / 2012 / WinPE4.
If you are just going for integration with your boot images, then WinPE3 (from WAIK) should have DaRT7 and WinPE4 (from ADK) should have DaRT8.

What David said is correct.
I'd like to point out that DaRT 8 doesn't need to be installed on your server, necessarily. You can install it anywhere - with the /a switch; you're really just trying to get to the Toolx64 and Toolx86 cab files. I'm running Windows 7 64-Bit and actually have both the DaRT 7 and DaRT 8 tools installed.

Hi David an Nick,
thx for answers.
i have double checked my configuration.
- I am using ADK
- I am using MDT 2012 (version 6.1.2369.0)
- There is not Dart7 in my Features-list, Dart8 is enabled and i have completely regenerated my litetouch.wim :
I have checked my CS.ini :

When booting from WDS/PXE, my credentials-screen will be displayed, and not this screen (screenshot from working environment with server2012) :
This Welcome-screen is displayed BEFORE the credentials-check when it`s working ok.
So it seems i am missing the WELCOME-screen.
In my cs.ini SkipBDDWelcome was set to YES. But after changing to NO and regenerate the boot-image, still this welcome-screen is skipped.
Why is this screen (with the dart8-option it) skipped using this configuration?
Thx

Glad it's working. I have SkipBDDWelcome=NO in my CS.ini and also in Bootstrap.ini. In that case, the DaRT tools will just start automatically, minimizing itself in the bottom left corner.

Yes.
are there any possibilities to configure some credentials for using Dart8?
In this situation every user will have the possiblity to pxe-boot a machine and use Dart8.
Thx
