Unanswered Completely confused about Address Book download...

    Hi again...

    First, my environment specifics:

My file database is: SMVCOAPPS1.Domain.LOCAL (the share is called LyncData)

So all my Address Book files are under \\SMVCOAPPS1\LyncData\1-WebServices-1\ABFiles

I can browse to \\SMVCOAPPS1\LyncData using Windows Explorer, and see the subdirectories & all the data.

On SMVCOLYNCFE1, in IIS / Sites / Lync Server Internal Web Site / Abs, the Physical Path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2010\Web Components\Address Book Files\Int

If I try to browse to https://SMVCOLYNC1.Domain.LOCAL/Abs or https://smvcolync1.Domain.local/Abs/Handler, I get 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.

Ctrl-Right Click on Lync / GAL Status shows: https://smvcolync1.Domain.local:443/Abs/Handler

I've pored over the TechNet articles & searched all over this forum, and I can't find a good document on exactly what the requirements are for setting up the Address Book. Maybe it should just work automatically. Mine doesn't, though.

    My question is 2 fold.

    1. How is the Address Book data (from the LyncData share, on the file database) supposed to sync back to the FE server, to the Abs directory?

    2. What permissions do I need to set in IIS & within the actual file database share so I can download the Address Book?

Any chance someone could just help me troubleshoot the 403? I just don't know where I need to adjust permissions / security / authentication, and I'd really rather not just start making changes hoping to stumble upon something that works.

Should kernal-mode auth be on? I know Lync disables it automatically.

I found that the 403 doesn't actually indicate there is a problem of any sort - thus it is an unreliable method to test the address book download. I still cannot use the URL to download the address book unless I append the latest file name to the URL:

    https://smvcolync1.domain.local/abs/handler/F-0e95.lsabs

That allows me to download the file directly - can you do that?

any luck with a solution?  I've found several threads on similar issues, but nothing quite matching my issue.

I was able to get the address book downloaded, yes. The 403 doesn't mean there's an error - in fact, if you're getting the 403, it's likely that everything is set correctly. Exactly what problem are you having? Are the address files being generated properly on the LyncData share? Can you browse directly to the .lsabs file and download it?

I am getting the 403, but can access the files directly. I can't seem to get the db and idx file to show up.  The only time I see it is if I do enableexchangecontactsync.  Even then, it won't actually search anything.

I can, however, add people directly with their sip.  Even if I have folks added, it doesn't seem to let me filter them out.

I've also tried setting addressbookavailability  to web only with the same results.
